Well I think the issue here is that there is no clear legal precedent.
e.g Until the Napster issue was decided for the first time it wasn't TOTALLY clear if it was LEGAL or not(people had some very creative arguments!), but now everyone accepts that it was illegal.
It will be interesting to see how this comes out legally (although I suspect they might settle).
Take any book and photocopy all its pages. Incredibly boring and tedious and definitely not worth it in most cases but TOTALLY doable if you are willing to spend a few hours of your life.
I don't know if libraries rely on a Fair use clause or if they have to get a blanket license from the publishers version of RIAA. I suspect its some form of Fair Use as making each library sign a deal would be a bit tedious.

(1) These guys are all billionaires. Saving a few hundred thousand dollars on taxes is very unlikely to be their main motivation.
(2) Their absolute income will still go DOWN, regardless of how much they save in taxes. It would be a pretty poor move to quit your job just so you could save on taxes!
I think they are just saying, "Hey, we're rich. We don't really need this money so screw it."
Not really a big deal, but definitely not evil either.
The main value of this study is that it came from an "objective party."
They didn't give the researchers's names in the article, but I am betting these guys are among the top people in their field(Stanford is pretty strong in this area).
In other words they have an academic reputation to uphold, I doubt they would pull something out of their ass and risk being publically humiliated.

-The only distro I have ever used is RedHat
- I use Windows XP both at home and at the office(horrors!).
In my defense, I do have dualboot on the office desktop and I ssh to a Red Hat box everyday to do the "real work" and to check my mail so I am not totally clueless in the Way Of The Penguin(tm).
I keep hearing that a space elevator would be the cheapest way to get stuff into space.
How much would it cost to get a pound(or kilo) into space using a space elevator compared with current technologies or the more conventional approaches competing for the X-prize?
There seem to be conflicting reports floating around.
I am sure we will get the correct details soon.
Personally, I am happier if they really did hit a rock, because that is a serious failure of navigation, hence that gives them something to work on for next time.

I don't see the difference between Amazon's excerpts and Google's excerpts.
This is also similar to newspapers like ny times offering excerpts of books (sometimes the entire first chapter) along with reviews.
