Well I think the issue here is that there is no clear legal precedent.
e.g Until the Napster issue was decided for the first time it wasn't TOTALLY clear if it was LEGAL or not(people had some very creative arguments!), but now everyone accepts that it was illegal.
It will be interesting to see how this comes out legally (although I suspect they might settle).
Take any book and photocopy all its pages. Incredibly boring and tedious and definitely not worth it in most cases but TOTALLY doable if you are willing to spend a few hours of your life.
I don't know if libraries rely on a Fair use clause or if they have to get a blanket license from the publishers version of RIAA. I suspect its some form of Fair Use as making each library sign a deal would be a bit tedious.
Amazing how many people are willing to leap to the "GOOGLE IS EVIL" conclusion without thinking it through.
(1) These guys are all billionaires. Saving a few hundred thousand dollars on taxes is very unlikely to be their main motivation.
(2) Their absolute income will still go DOWN, regardless of how much they save in taxes. It would be a pretty poor move to quit your job just so you could save on taxes!
I think they are just saying, "Hey, we're rich. We don't really need this money so screw it."
Not really a big deal, but definitely not evil either.
The main value of this study is that it came from an "objective party."
They didn't give the researchers's names in the article, but I am betting these guys are among the top people in their field(Stanford is pretty strong in this area).
In other words they have an academic reputation to uphold, I doubt they would pull something out of their ass and risk being publically humiliated.
Ha! I got "Slackware Linux", which supposedly makes me l33t or something.
The strange thing is:
-I have never even seen a slackware installation.
-The only distro I have ever used is RedHat
- I use Windows XP both at home and at the office(horrors!).
In my defense, I do have dualboot on the office desktop and I ssh to a Red Hat box everyday to do the "real work" and to check my mail so I am not totally clueless in the Way Of The Penguin(tm).
I keep hearing that a space elevator would be the cheapest way to get stuff into space.
How much would it cost to get a pound(or kilo) into space using a space elevator compared with current technologies or the more conventional approaches competing for the X-prize?
There seem to be conflicting reports floating around.
I am sure we will get the correct details soon.
Personally, I am happier if they really did hit a rock, because that is a serious failure of navigation, hence that gives them something to work on for next time.
1997 called, they want their FUD back.

I don't see the difference between Amazon's excerpts and Google's excerpts.
This is also similar to newspapers like ny times offering excerpts of books (sometimes the entire first chapter) along with reviews.
Libraries allow the same thing:
Take any book and photocopy all its pages. Incredibly boring and tedious and definitely not worth it in most cases but TOTALLY doable if you are willing to spend a few hours of your life.

I believe it was E.T.
Haven't you heard the expression "Good artists borrow, great artists steal"? ;);)
THANK YOU!!

It seems he does joint work with CMU but his official position is at UPitt(as we sometimes call it).
I predict there will be at least one post(and probably several posts) with this theme.

but I would just to like to say that found your comment very interesting.
I guess there are some tangible benefits to diversity after all!
Thanks, but actually I was wondering if someone knew the actual dollars per pound numbers.
Well its all very speculative anyway.
I am not really convinced this will ever happen, but if it is built in my lifetime that would be pretty cool.

That was exactly my reaction.
Can't they make an interesting trailer without giving away so much?
I would have liked to have been surprised by some of those plot points.
Perhaps the solution is not to watch trailers.
This write-up from the website linked in the article is fairly informative:

The question of why a collision makes solving the problem easy is answered at the top of page 8.
I am (officially) a catholic and I never noticed all this religious stuff in Chronicle of Narnia when I first read it.
It was only much later I started hearing "Aslan represents Christ" and C.S. Lewis was propagandizing for Christianity e.t.c...
Of course, I was 10 years old at the time and not particularly insightful in things.
The same thing happened with Animal Farm (allegory for Stalinism).
Personally, I think it is very cool when books have this property. Gives it a more of a 'geek' flavor.
here
Summary:
It was a broken axle that did it.
The mapping helped.
The crash from 2 weeks ago had a negative impact.
They claim they could race again today. We'll see how ready they are next year.
Thanks for the report.
I wonder if DAD and Golem had some new tricks up their sleaves that allowed them to do things on the cheap?
Although I think DAD relied on a custom vision system that is actually the primary product of their company, so that might have given them the edge.

Nah, this was pretty much as expected.
There is a reason they called it 'The Grand Challenge'.
Robot navigation and computer vision are definitely not solved problems yet.

Thanks,
I just got a new desktop background.
OK, this is funny (even if you don't agree with the politics).
