Excel compatibility is my concern too and I need the real version of MS office.

If you want cheap and do not need compatibility there are alternatives like the Asus notebooks and OLPC's. However hybrid and solid state drives are expensive still. If you wait when there are sales or use teh internet you can find overstocked notebooks for hundreds off.

I bought my Toshiba Satellite for $650 on sale. If I became more patient I could have received the notebook from the net for $499 as it became overstocked by some of the retailers.

So basically business degree accountants with clipboards arm twist the professionals with MBA's who know how to run the company.

MS knowing this is probably fueling money for the lawsuit against Yahoo and using ignorant shareholders to arm twist yahoo to making a deal. Part of me feels ms knows its future earnings will be alot higher due to their investments in R&D and they want a steal on it.

Gillette faced a similar dilemma back in the 80's before the mach 3 and sensor products. A hostile takeover was planned and the CEO knew about what was going to happen 5 years down the road. He fought against the takeover arguing the company's networth will be much higher. Turns out the stock price went up 5x.

I have written many anti vista postings since I bought a notebook with Vista loaded on it last decemember.

Most of the anti vista comments here are untrue after you get used to it, use the new start menu features and install SP1, updated drivers, and bios upgrades.

Both hogs such as Netbeans and OpenOffice ran slower on my notebook than XP assuming Vista is set up properly. Disk fetching and better caching is how I attribute the performance increase.

The majority of Vista bashes are from those who have semi supported hardware.

My notebook was running off of disk PIO mode during startup and no sata was loaded with the default Vista install. As you can imagine my system took forever to boot and when Vista indexed it slowed things down. I bashed Vista constantly here.

I downgraded to XP but upgraded back to Vista. I missed the windows index search when you hit the start button. Here is a hint for XP users.... your not supposed to find your programs by your mouse. Just type it in! Also I can search my javadocs and my ms word papers for school quickly by seaching by content. I go to a christian school with bible versus required in my papers. Vista makes my job easier as I type a subject and it searches the index for my conent.

Vista is not fast after Toshibe provided an SD sata driver and a bios update to start vista quickly. SP1 fixed the constant disk usage. It rarely ever gets in the way once things are up. Wow is just as fast in vista as in XP. Maybe only a few fps slower.

You are %100 correct and its all coming true, though your comment was intended to be sarcasm.

Look at Google apps as an example?

Microsoft killed the network computer by changing the EULA for its windows monopoly to somehow make it appear that smart terminals were dead.

It is coming true and dumb terminals of the 1980's are certainly the right way to go for large organizations thanks to networking and the internet.

True active desktop using push technology was stupid and not a real implementation but look at KDE and konqueror as an example?

Oh and dotcoms not making money? I just complemented an e-commerce course at my college and the market is now just exploding thanks to highspeed internet that was unavailable to most users during the 1990's. Amazon just made its first profit and the internet as a marketing tool is exploding and ecommerce has been growing tremendously. Especially this is true in asain markets.

The browser is the computer as far as I am concerned and many businesses will be looking into servring intranet and web apps as a cost reduction measure. New apps like myspace and even slashdot are changing the way we network and learn more about our IT jobs.

However Google and Microsoft already have a heads up and pissing off google might be bad. Information retrival is the next wave of the future as storage capacity gets larger. The windows vista search utility is really cool when looking up java docs.

McCain is not pro torture and wants to have spending hawks in his cabinet. The federal government is too big and our interest rates will only get alot higher if we can't keep spending out of control. Bush Sr. lost as interest rates went through the roof as a result of the defecit and economic slowdown.

McCain hates earmarks and corrupt lobbying and many feel he is going to change this. Also socialized medicine scares me as we can't afford it. Obama's plan makes the most sense and it wont force poor people to enroll in expensive premiums they can't afford if Hilary has her way. Some poor people in California work 2 jobs because by law you have to offer benefits if someone works more than 30 hours. THis would bankrupt alot of people.
