Intellectual elites are not taking over. Those who are born with money from parents take over as only they have enough money or capital to be a business owner and hire. same is true with those attending elite universities.
I doubt that many immigrant workers are dumb genetically. They are just dirt poor and can not get out of their situation or their family needed them to sell chicklets to tourists instead of going to school so they can eat at night.
I said these workers are paid less than minimum wage legally by government paperwork as a seasonal immigrant worker. So tell me how can I compete? They can't pay me $3.50 an hour and they would have to pay a head tax on hiring me.
There are tons of orange groves near where I live and when picking season is over they all hang out in front of the home depot with signs willing to work for food. Many employers then hire them illegally and do not document the hiring. Just go to the home depot parking lot near the orange groves for cheap labor they dont have to pay taxes on.
Thats another thing too I have to compete agaisnt. That is paying taxes if I work for them.
They should at least pay them minimum wage and pay taxes per head so if they still can't find work they can hire immigrants.
1.) Do you think former IT workers who lost their jobs to India or had their wages slash are going to be happy out of jobs?
2.) Automation overseas is making our jobs obsolete.
Yet no one cares so why should I care about them?
Not to sound cruel but I am competing with these people now for minimum wage jobs and these farm workers pay them for less for minium wage and I can not even work the fields myself as an American.
Basically they can complain all they want but no one will care and I will be angry if they do. As its viewed Indians are good but during the illegal immigration debate somehow these poor illegal immigrants need work and the mean old Americans wont let them and both parties need to act as one to save them... cry me a river.
Real Player is no longer the POS it once was and is now slimmer and spyware free.
I use it on Linux because its the only player with correct color callibration for my laptop where the colors are not too dark and are richer. I have even installed the latest version on a windows system and it showed no signs of malware and it was lean and mean compared to Quicktime and ms media player.
But the problem is DRM. DRM in itself means we can not control it so a corporation decides what we use and that is almost always IE/Windows because its what everyone else uses. Firefox can not have a chance if IE is needed to listen to music on yahoo or watch shows on the BBC.
The BBC is a tax payer funded community media. Why should it cater to DRM and pleasing MS? If they want to make revenue off of shows then fine but at least put their news portion on non drm like CNN does. You can also add drm to ogg, mp3 or any other format by scrambling it. Real media player used to advertise this and it pissed off many users but the fact is the PHB's at the BBC will refuse anything without DRM.
No you can not write any reasonable piece of software for business in 24 hours??
Are your lecturers or professors professional programmers? Don't they have any experience in the real world? Or did they learn how to teach by getting their cs degree in mathmatics and read one "learn vb.net in 24 hours!" books that somehow makes them an expert to teach it?
3 months is what is used here in the US for quality projects written in C++ using business objects or vb.
I learned java from an instructor who worked at Bell Labs during the 80's. He actually learned OOP from Bourne Strastop. Basically it takes awhile to do any real Object Oriented work and specifying requirements before any real code is written. Not bad from a community college.
Any solution done in 24 hours is simplistic and very very poorly written and does not meet requirements for the project.
Lenovo which is IBM's former pc division sells such system with great support. However they are pricey like you mentioned due to support. European government customers like Germany have tens of thousands of desktops running Novels SuSE Linux.
But even if you run Windows you will get a call from Mike in Atlanta and not Mike in Bangalore if you have any problems with their units.
Dell used to sell and support redhat linux on dell poweredge servers and some workstations years ago. I was under the impression it still did.
If business users can not get support then its time to dump Dell. Fud fud you may complain but they absolutely refused to give a potential customer the requirements though it had the resources to do so.
Dell rightfully deserves its current reputation. They provide no support, have no engineering staff left(they do not like fixed costs), every business decision needs a business case, and they cripple their own hardware to save pennies per unit. I used to work help desk and the dells were the only system where their ati and nvidia cards could not use ati or nvidia drivers since they crippled them and moddified them in a way to save a nickel a board.
Try running a game with a driver from 2004 with no way to upgrade it?
But if Dell wants to turn customers away then its their own problem. To me personally the lack of quality and good support is why HP/Compaq recently took over as the number 1 pc supplier. I would never buy a Dell.
I suppose copying the products to your companies subsidaries counts as copying. A little extreme interpretation of the gpl but still its not all surprising in this lawsuit fearing country where an injunction means mass firing.
Well the financial industry has money so its their problem and not yours if they want to waste it.:-)
My fear is these same companies wont be buying anything without an ms protected version of linux soon as fear of litigation counts as a liability. This is where companies like redhat might lose clients and companies like yours might move towards windows. But of course that is a different subject..
What are your mission critical apps if you do not mind me asking?
I saw something about a cash register going down. Most POS software is win32 based but I have seen X based terminal POS's for quite some time running SCO or Linux as well.
I do give your credit for having balls for stating something like that here.:-)
BTW there is no difference between blessed and non blessed versions of linux. At least not that I am aware of.
Why do you need integration on a server? A desktop where you want to roll some excel com+ object in your custom vb app is one thing, but servers require 24x7 uptime depending on your needs of your business. SQL Server is the only thing that pops into my mind where integration with the desktop is required. You can run other platforms for just about anything on the server end to talk to win32 applications. ODBC and JDBC can talk to any database on the planet.
Samba and eDirectory aka NDS run pretty well on linux for win32 desktop management Unix including linux have a niche with internet applications and databases where performance, cost, and reliablity is generally alot higher and is needed for a server environment.
If ms starts suing customers of linux and shutdowns the samba project with an injunction is the day when linux users should start to worry and get ready for battle but such things are not happening.
Detroit and Exxon/Mobil would have a field day lobbying and claiming lost jobs to the politicians that run the government. Ford makes maybe 1-2,000 for each Ford Focus. Meanwhile they make $9,000 for each Ford Explorer sold. Maybe this is why they have been refusing to put fuel cell focuses on the market? Its clear what their financial interests are.
SUV owners would revolt and vote. Most rich white voters who are male and own such vehicles vote more than any other group which is why the republicans have been winning so many elections. You do not want to piss them off.
Also we do already subsidize suvs and trucks. Why do you think are premiums have been rising so much over 7 years? To pay suv owners so theirs do not go up as much and revolt.
As a former call center worker I can tell you he was doing his job.
I tried to help customers directly but I ended up taking longer and getting myself into trouble as most users are clueless and it is switching it on %75 of the time. Customers are very poor communicators and can mislead you very easily to a wrong path unless you have a list in front of you to follow in order.
Also, not to mention at such places like AOL its considering subordination not to read off a checklist like "is it on" and you could get in trouble. Sigh
No you must solve every call and do it under 7 minutes.
When I had such a call I cringe because its a a 45 minute call and my former boss will get all mad at bringing my team and his stats down to his boss.
What is evaluated is how quick I get them off the phone. If the user is cluless then get him TO HANG UP! Anyway how that is not rude.
But hey, a call center is a cost center and must be eliminated as any accountant will tell you. After all call centers do not bring the company many. Sales people do. So lets bitch at the call center people and make their calls under 7 minutes or else and fire the sales people when customers leave. The accountants said so.
Stupid phb's.... sigh. Then they wonder where all there customers are going?
As you can tell I did not last long and quit with a third of my group within the first 90 days since what they ask is so hard to do under strict circumstances.
THey control standards, operating systems, what people buy, how they use software, what price people pay, and even the speed of innovation, to what best suites Microsoft.
If MS were dumb enough to give away their crown jewels then people could be free and decide for themselves. This would mean a loss of profit as people who want to write letters to Granda would not spend hundreds of dollars for Word and another hundred for Vista. It would mean phbs may actually consider non ms products.
MS owns over 50% of the server market now thanks to MS Office and Windows on desktops. Its what the phbs think will integrate best with it and thats all they know.
What if I copy this guys code line by line and make a competing product?
Wouldn't that eat his marketshare and devalue his product as more supply equals less demand?
I would not release his code at all openly if I were him.
I feel what he is asking about is if he is violating the GPL by bundling his product with GPL code. Tivio is borderline in violation as the license states if you share linux or some gpl product with another, then that second product must be free and open as well.
Perhaps he can bring 2 cds with his product. One with linux and one without.
NetBSD might be alot better for this reason. This is a very legally gray matter as it may count as a whole distribution if any proprietary code is included.
Bill Gates referred to what you are talking as viral licensing meaning it infects everything it touches. Sun was smart and put a java classpath exception with the gpl release of java for that reason.
There is the copyleft license which is OSS and includes the right to link in proprietary applications. I am thinking of developing software for my own use and perhaps licensing it or selling it if I feel its actual worth anything. BUt I will only use copyleft, MIT, or a BSD licensed code.
I used to use FreeBSD before Linux finally became stable and ready and I loved the BSD license. If you want to contribute and start a FOSS great! If you want to develop a program financially well great too! Its the most free license as it protects work and you can do whatever you want with the code.
The problem is you do not develop for Safari+firefox but IE, Safari, and hten firefox and increasing your costs to 300%. W3c standards are not fully implemented the same or not all supported. You can never be sure one browser will work the same as the other 2.
What I meant was that many web developers feel they have more work now since htey have to test their pages with firefox, where as before they write for IE only or use some win32 app like frontpage to create most of the IE specific tags for them. Now their bosses are having a fit as the cost and time to produce and update their websites are increasing alot more.
They love firefox because IE is a bad browser period which one because it was bundled and it was mediocrely better than Netscape 4.1.
If I write a webpage with MS frontpage or MS interdev will it look the same on mac,pc, and linux with both IE and Firefox? What if I follow the w3c standards? Would it still look the same? The answer would be probably no.
We need a single or several browsers with huge marketshare to convince the phbs to invest the extra time and money. If they all fight for a mere 10% or something small then as a boss I would not support it.
On one hand I would like to see some competition and many browsers would force developers to use something called the w3c standards which they no longer follow. Or I should say the browsers do not.
However if this steals marketshare away from firefox it will make many web developers give up on anything non IE.
- eg
89% IE 10% firefox
sounds better to make a business case to a phb to support a website site that is w3c compliant and supports firefox vs
89% IE 6% Firefox 4% Safari
Which tells the phb that only IE matters as the rest are niche players that do not make significant marketshare to be worth the investment.
Many website developers both love and hate Firefox as it is because they have more work but the hope is firefox3 will be acid2 compliant and will force IE 7.5 in the future to be as well.
What happened in Florida was the result of the high deficit of the federal government that Bush created.
Florida used to receive billions in federal revenue and loans. Now since money is tight I do not believe they receive any assistance.
So when Florida had more money they increased spending and now they can not afford to pay for everything. Texas, California and many other states are in the same boat with huge gapping deficits. IF you are going to cut off money you need to so do gradually and not just overnight.
Intellectual elites are not taking over. Those who are born with money from parents take over as only they have enough money or capital to be a business owner and hire. same is true with those attending elite universities.
