    I wonder if the cost of hiring programmers to implement these features in mysql outweighed the cost of using a more powerful DBMS like Postgresql or even a proprietary one like Oracle?

    Mysql is known for a fast file system and is improving fast but many features google added already exist in current databases.

    Which development environment offers the best integration with MS products? Surprise its visual studio.

    If you have a windows shop your stuck with it. Borlands tools do not include things like the VBA for office.

    My old man wanted a cheap pc with no more than 512 megs of ram. I told him about Vista and he is fairly well educated and knows about the issues with it.

    He told me he wanted to run Linux if Vista comes preinstalled and he then asked me if there are any pc manufactors that could load Linux so he did not have to pay the ms tax. I did not do any evangelizing at all on this as I believe Windows does work for most people like my mother.

    But still its helping linux alot

    South Carolina began nullifying trade laws with Cotton and threatened to do the same if anti slavery measures ever became in place.

    The US civil war was the result of this after the courts ruled South Carolina could not do this.

    I did not click on the link but many media sites use MS drm to broadcast content. Sites like Yahoo Music require Windows and IE because they use WMV and some shitty activeX controls.

    I do not know anyone besides my father who uses firefox regardless of what the statistics say. It makes sense or did a year or two ago to only target IE as its what everyone uses and what frontpage expects everyone to be using. Maybe this might be changing but there is alot of pressure to get websites down quickly and cheaply and many phbs think its a waste of time to target anyone else when the big CIO wants the page updated yesterday.

    More than likely they will have their own incompatible version of html5 and will make sure Frontpage includes these new tags by default.

    Then it wont matter. I hate monopolies and this is the reason. At least when Netscape tried netscape specific tags IE then came into the scene to force compliance.

    They just need to evolve in that environment.

    ... since the 20th century. THe exception is at work.

    I can access my email anywhere with web based email programs and I do not have to remember any complicated smtp or pop3 information that changes when I switch ISPs either. Its just always there.

    I do not understand how client based email programs are better? Maybe customization in a proprietary ms shop I can see. But Thunderbird is not integrated with MS products like OUtlook is and it will never catch up as MS uses its products to lock out competitors.

    WIndows is very popular with small and medium sized businesses because Joe in the office can run a tape backup and it doesn't take an IT expert to do basic administration. They can call you if they need anything more technical. I assume your customers are fairly small or department sized based on your comment that they do not do backups?? Good lord! I would be hesistant to do business with such companies because if the volume on the raid ever becomes corrupt they will blame you for it and your reputation would get hurt. Even small mom and pop shops should have a tape backup and its not that hard as such POS systems come with shiny windows based tape backup software. Maybe this is why they like Windows?

    Php is not used for large scale sites and it is pretty much hackable though improving. Real sites use java and .NET for ecommerce. But again if its a small business who knows.

    But Unix and Linux are used by bigger businesses or those with special needs like ISP's.

    Because if bob smiley in IT made the decision to standardize on Microsoft products to get his raise is underminded then its all out political war.

    Business is very conservative and do not like change and view change as a way to increase TCO. ALso like I said earlier its politics. If you rock the boat you make enemies in the corporate world

    Now the students can have a real highspeed bandwith again. My friend at Northwestern has seen his bandwith go from awesome to barely faster than a 56k modem once Napster and limewire was on every college kids desktop. The costs to upgrade the lan are outrageous and many games such as quake2 became unplayable.

    You can tell by my post that this was awhile back but I remember seeing similiar posts at the time here at slashdot. The lines should be used for academia first off above anything else and maybe wow or halflife second ;-). I am not in favor of censoring but its expensive to handle such bandwith hogs. Packet shaping I am in favor for.

    Well if family is what you love then you do a job so you can support them more. If having a big house is what you love then you do not care about the job as much as the pay.

    Right now I am not finished with my degree and I want to do what I love programming but lack the degree now in this post .com crunch.

    My fiancee is letting me do what I love and get my degree while I only work part time. She works full time but she prefers me to be happy and spending time with me rather than me having 2 borderline slave jobs for a slightly bigger house.

    So do what you love and if your family has trouble with this then she or he is the wrong person for you.

    My old man has a dieing windows98 system that he refuses to upgrade. It has a 3dfx vodoo1 card and the whole 9 yards.

    Anyway guess how many times he had to reinstall windows98 during the last 6 years? 0!

    Yes if you do not actually do anything but browse the web with firefox and occasionally run excel and word you will be fine even with the old win9x codebase.

    Linux at least does not have this issue due to the nasty registry entries.

    AV software is alive more than ever thanks to crackers on the internet and buffer overflow malware ads on webpages.

    PRoblem is the software is not healthy indeed and can screw up a whole system. ITs like their approach to neutralizing a hammer is to encapsulate the whole thing. Every i/o transaction is read and maybe even virtualized.

    Does it stop virii? Hell no. I worked help desk at a gaming company which uses the IE sdk for some code on the logon screen. Anyway it wont load if any viruses or keyboard monitoring programs are installing which use the IE sdk. I get many callers saying "WTF. I have norton. What do you mean my system is infected!?". I then clean the system with some cheesy app that is not an antivirus program.

    WindowsXP does what you said and creates a custom hal after installation. Problem is after you change some bios settings or add hardware without first installing the driver can cause it to blue screen.

    Republicans are having issues as well since they have gone very far to the right recently and not of their candidates preach to the choir. There is more in common with moderates like Guilini and Bill Clinton then there is with Bush and Guilini.

    Your free only from government prosecution. Having a job is not an inalienable right and the employer has a right to fire him because he could hurt the business if Obama drops his contract with the company.

    It sucks but thats how it goes. Yes you can run around office screaming the star spangled banner like a maniac and have security escourt you out and its your right to do so and lose your job of course. It only means the government can not prosecute you for doing so.

    Basically it boils down to kids only having a limited amount of money buying other products which are cheaper. Video games, cell phones, and consoles are becoming cheaper yet cds are remaining expensive. Add to deteriorating job market and higher fuel costs which hurt teenage consumers the most, and you will find they would rather spend money on other items.

    THe music companies have their price point figures off with supply and demand and should lower their prices like the game makers and cell phone companies are doing.
