Proprietary drivers are a fact of life in any os. Most other operating systems use kernel api's for device drivers and Linux should include it if they want better control over the blobs. Java5 and java6 are alot faster than its previous versions as dynamic class loading and other features are now used. Also swing is not threaded by default unlike every other toolkit out there. This means the gui would appear unresponsive if the rest of the app was busy doing something. Java6 threads the swing classes by default now which should eliminate this issue with poorly coded java apps.

I have used java5 on my old pentiumM 1.7 ghz notebook and it runs perfectly fine.

Also this release uses some Apple technology with their jdk by offering dynamic class loading. Startups should be alot faster. This and java7 which is already in development should be really exciting. Sun has been putting out alot of java releases recently due to .NET and competition is good.

Microsoft eventually plans to merge their Windows Media Center OS DVR functions to the next Xbox where its going to be the center of every home. Kind of like a home server for games, music since it will sync to a Zune, TV recording, and hd-dvd watching.

Apple needs to compete and it doesn't have mindshare nor game oriented developers so buying Nintendo would make sense. Frontrow 3.0 mixed with gaming functions would be sweet. Also Apple owns the majority of mp3 player market at the moment and they could use their Ipod and Itunes to make their appliance a stereo as well. Zune unfortunately is not real popular at the moment but it can sync to the xbox.

Yes some slashdotters will call you incompentant but the true compentent admins who have %99.98 uptime cheat by using expensive switches and clustering. So who cares if one goes down? Blade servers make the problem of uptime go away if your employer has the $$$$ for switches. A similiar argument could be said for linux x86 boxes because they lack the ability to hotswaw cpu's and hardware while its running unlike unix boxes from Sun and IBM.

Actually the latest kernel that came out this morning supports hotswappable cpus so the reason for a switch is less when dealing with uptime.
