A decade ago while I was in highschool I saw the film believe it or not but the teacher had the courage to tell us that Exxon had invested in the movie before we watched it. It went on how great the ecosystems were and despite the oil spill Alaska had the best salmon catch in history the following spring. THe teacher mentioned that this was an actually bad thing as those on the top of the food chain were negatively affected. Also we all laughed while the film had a diagram of most of the oil evaporating and doing little harm in Valdez. What was bad was that Exxon was not mentioned in the credits at all. Only the wetlands coalition as a major sponsor.
For those who do not know, the wetlands coalition is madeup of oil and gas companies despite the decietful name.
MS SQL is a great product. Its their only product that has had years of uptime that I have only seen on Unix boxes and its easy to use and powerful. This also was back in the NT4 days which was quite impressive.
I think this study might not be as much fud as some are making it to be. Oracle is the kitchen sink and has many components such as development tools an d apis that come with their product. Microsoft has them as well but bundles them with MSDN and VS.net. So if you compare the development tools that come with the database agaisnt just SQL Server and not their ADO.net and other.net tools then yes its an unfair comparison. I guess I need more details on the test to know what they tested.
Microsoft's marketing department uses active and positive verbs and nouns in naming their products so they appear to be better than the competition as well as the human brain memorizes mnuemics easily. Examples are, explorer, Word,Excel, access, active directory, and MS SQL Server. Microsoft's core customers are pretty clueless when it comes to technology and use their stuff to get work done. Using positive and active simple names that represent what they do does make a difference. If your thinking "SQL" subconsciously when your wondering whether to purchase a database your brain will be more likely to remember "SQL" server first. Its great marketing
THe name is no different than the MS Word processor. Yes that is the name of the product but other word processors exist as well. So Microsoft calls it Microsoft SQL Server to show its theirs and what the product does.
Because this is extactly what software patents are. They are just mathmatical algorithms that the machine does rather than the human with ordinary math using a cooking like recipe syntax to tell the computer exactly how to calculate it.
Copyrights I can see as needing protection since they are the work of many people and alot of investment.
What if someone spent years finding the perfect algorithm or set of algorithms? Should they then be patented?
If the answer is the same as cooking recipes and mathmatical equations it should apply to software as well.
As humorous as I found your comment the chilling truth comes from OBL taking the same extreme. "... the Koran teaches that unbelievers lives have no value... " and he goes on to rationalize suicide bombings agaisnt unbelievers claiming American troops hurting muslims in Iraq is bad but its ok for him to continue his jihad.
The problem is that the supply issue will correct itself after christmass. Unfortunately your son has GOT TO HAVE IT and your promised it to him for christmass. Right now Target and Best Buy only sold 50 wii's and wont have anymore in until next year in my area. Its insane and creates a bubble for rich customers. If you have a few thousand dollars in your checking account if your rich enough so just buy it. Its just supply and demand and nothing is overinflated in the market. Sony purposedly made less of them to bring up the prices for christmass.
The free market is what brings these 3rd world laborers. In a truly free market we would not have jobs as 90% of the industry not service related could just be run in Vietnam or China for a fraction of the cost.
I played teh Wii at a Gametstop in california. The wiimote rocks! Its for hardcore gamers as well and you can buy the standard gamecube controller for it as well. What is going to take it off are the amount of titles for it. Assuming it makes #1 the title base is expected to grow to 60 by years end.
Also the wiimote makes it difficult for hardcore games too because reaction time and angle are important in using it. It will vary on what you are playing. WIth the ps2 and gc I feel the point of most games is to hit the right combinations of buttons at a very fast speed. With this I can focus on using my arm and focusing on winning and not memorizing arkane buttons at the fastest speed possible like in mortal Kombat. Yes, I know that game is 10 years old but I began to hate console games after playing as it became the new thing with console makers overloading their controllers with bottons. It was dumb and pointless.
Games like NFL sports title and Mario Kart will rock on this!
Offtopic but I heard Weirld Al sing in New York a few years ago with the parody turkey on rye (Or pastrami). Now chicken pot pie. You may want to search for that song instead.
The best thing about Linux is choice. If Shuttleworth or whatever his name is doesn't like the default theme then the option to install it later should be there. I like the bluntu theme.
AOL uses Windows 3.0 applications still for their support operations. They were annoying as I had to use the file menu to switch tabs and frames within the application. Even clicking would not focus the windows right because they were so ancient
Its not cheap to run a backbone for the internet and the ISP's have a right to make sure they are not undercut this way. Yes, you may say its not your problem that their bussiness model is flawed but if they did try to charge what is fair you can expect very low data rates or the telecoms would become bankrupt due to the high overhead costs. We have alot of high bandwith now for cheap
Internet access is fairly cheap and there are free access in many libraries and even coffee houses for cheap prices. How much is a black cup of coffee?
Yes its illegal and I have my wap encrpyted for this reason. I live near UC at Riverside and I dont want college kids doing illegal things over my wap. 3 years is extreme but a fine should be implemented. Do you really want your isp limiting internet access to one computer with NAT banned? I don't and I think its fair with several computers per same household and its the best bussiness model for everyone involved.
Focus on your bussiness and not the software you use to achieve your results. If your bussiness is developing software then focus on what your customers want and where the market is with demand.
Software should not be on your mind as much as other expenses and equipment needed to do your job. No magical software will create your bussiness model.
Just do what they did to George in Seinfield. Just take the computer away from his desk and ignore him until he walks out and quits as he wont be able to do anything.
Maybe his network connection on that computer might mysteriously not work... hmmm.. its like the router is not letting his machine network.
Seriously if HR wont discipline him for lack of performance than hacking certainly would get him canned. After all his boss did not approve and installing extra software and damaging equipment can get you fired in almost any office.
Go on the media and local news channels. This will piss enough voters off that they may vote for your candidate instead. Its worth a shot and mention you may sue them. Doing so will make the media frenzy around your candidate to get more airtime.
That worker is not being paid to beta test Gentoo. He can do that at home on his own time and equipment. Sounds to me he needs to go if he can't get his work done when needed. If Gentoo is the problem then its his decision for not using something stable. Its not an excuse when he is at the office staring at a screen with gcc instead of doing work because something broke and he can't open emacs. Most shops lock down their desktops for that reason so they can do work and not be distracted with IT downtime.
Rumor has it that a new acpi patch is the culprit. On my system it will run but the mhz speed wont go down on my laptop when idle and it no longer hibernates. This is also a 6.10 issue. and sounds like an ACPI bug as well. I was going to download a vinilla kernel but I have issues with/dev/mixer and other strange bugs with multimedia on my system. Some symlinks are probably not setup right.
Its definitely buggy and LTS is not included iwth this release. Hmmm I wonder why?
THe applet tag is now obsolete thanks to lobbying from Microsoft to the w3c committee. Java swing will not be used as a client again for this reason unless the applet tag is reintroduced.
Maybe nerds should lobby for it or include a "java" tag instead in a feature version of html
I dont understand why Microsoft has been so friendly to OSS sofwtare on windows, but this is well strange.
Microsoft has been nicer since Bill Gates left the CEO position to Steve Balmer but Microsoft must have an incentive. Why would Microsoft help a competitor? Especially one that is very entrenched in the server market which MS wished it owned like the desktop market.
I wonder if there are clauses in that agreement for MS to pull a SCO if they feel to threatened? This is the same microsoft that screwed IBM twice with DOS and OS/2 and Netscape so I am skeptical.
Duke Nukem Forever is the star title for the hot phantom game console.
It depends on how old our first machines were

I am 30 and have been playing on pc's since the 8086 during 1986.
I usually get uncomfortable when I have more than 3 apps opened until recently when memory became more plentiful. Today I have around 4 or 5 and 2 or 3 tabs on firefox.
THe reason behind this is I remember teh days of running Windows 3.11 on 4 megs of ram and Windows95 on 8 megs of ram. TO get the best performance for games you needed to create your own autoexec.bat and config.sys files for DOS. I used Windows only for boring things like AOL 1.0 and Mosiac web browser. I bet the younger crowd who get into serious hacking with 32 and 64 meg systems have more windows opened.
I still think keeping things minimium is the best thing even though I now have over 1 gig of ram on my laptop that I am writing this post in.:-)

Very dangerous thinking indeed

It uses less memory than Mono and has very mature gui compoenents in swing and awt that just work across platforms.
