Automatix2 will update Ubuntu with illegal fonts an dif you install xtf font rendering for Xorg the problem will go away. My desktop looks as sweet as WindowsXP under gnome as a result.
Part of me does not like this because companies like Enron and Diebold would have a field day with this. No proof of anything and timb bombed documents protected by TCPA to delete evidence would make it impossible to prove guilt.
What a shame. I think if my notebook died I would go with an AMD chip. I care about heat and power usage and lifetime warranties. It seems Intel and macbooks are waaayyy too hot for lap usage and more heat means poorer battery life and lifetime. This is why I bought an older PentiumM centrino notebook. They are cool and power efficient.
OSX is a great desktop operating system but a poor workstation compared to Linux. I summarized this on a post here.
Basically many opensource projects conflict and do not integrate with the praoprietary macosx counterparts. Its a bitch to upgrade things like samba and lpad. Ubuntu linux is great to upgrade and so are most debian based distro's and the BSD's. IT seems Apple wants you to upgrade and pay $$$ for the next version of OSX than allow you to upgrade the sytem yourself.
Just wrote a VM for the bios and reflash it. Any os installed will run under it and I will have full control. Kind of scary because it would be impossible to detect and malicious enough would be impossible to get rid of unless you throw the whole computer away.
I played with the release candidate and let me tell you its good you picked the older and stable distro. I would wait for a few weeks before the bugs are out.
I just downgraded to ubuntu 6.04.1
on
Ubuntu 6.10 is Out

Initramfs has been updated several times a day and reports of usb drives double mounting, not mounting, and randomly unmounting are quite huge, many wifi cards no longer work, multiple midi files can crash xmms, firefox 2.0 randomly crashes, and other issues means its not ready yet in my book.
Also in my journal I mentioned gpart crashed during a resizing of my ntfs partition. That was quite scary but I did not lose anything. According to launchpad it has not been fixed yet so Windows users beware.
Ubuntu is my favorite and one of the most stable distro's out there. However I highly advise ubuntu users to wait a few weeks before upgrading to this version.
I admit I am using the release candidate of Ubuntu but southwestairlines.com as well as starting it up can crash it. I also crashed it once on WindowsXP too. You may want to wait til 2.0.1 comes out if you like stability or if your a power user.
Otherwise its quicker to start in Linux and uses alot less memory. Especially when using lots of tabs.
I was so sick of linux going in a downward spiral while I used Fedora and SuSE. Ubuntu is up to date and very stable and easy to use. I highly recommend it.
I used to be a linux user and then a FBSD biggot and now an ubuntu Linux user again starting last year.
Linux was very stable at kernel 2.0 when Allen Cox was Linus's right hand man and the distro's did not include alpha quality bleeding edge products. FreeBSD was also very stable and I loved FFBSD 4.x. It had USB support long before Linux did and a certain quality was there that was absent in most linux distributions. However RedHat 7.x and the awefull mandrake ruined Linux expectation as a stable bug free operating system compared to Windows. I gave up and went to FreeBSD 4.2 and loved it! FreeBSD had the highest uptimes and could handle loads that Linux could not.
However the 1990's are over and FreeBSD 5.x and 6.x are terrible operating systems that are buggy under crazy locking schemes and spagehtti code. Most of hte core developers left and Linux distributions such as Ubuntu came with stable software and the kernel 2.6 is rock solid again like 2.0 was. Linux has caught up and beat FreeBSD.
Also my USB keyboard that worked under FBSD 4.x still does not work with the recent versions and no BSD hacker can figure it out.
FBSD is not the os it once was and neither is Linux.
WIne for years has been alpha quality. Unlike some distro's that like to be cutting edge yet have core dumps due to their buggy nature ( * cough* SuSE and FEdora). Gnome and KDE are very updated as they are good quality and wont crash that much compared to wine.
Its damn the best linux distro out there and easiest to use. Yes it needs improvements though. I was a FreeBSD user before the FBSD 5.x fiasco kind of killed it. I began to dislike Linux because it was buggy and all the apps kept crashing and was difficult to use as everything in BSD land has a well documented layout and easy sh scripts and not rc scripts.
However Ubuntu is the only distro that doesn't crash apps and just works.
I found out when I installed netbeans and java that you are right. Mike can't install it without help. How do you graphically move a file in nataulus and click on it to run it that requires root access? You can't.
Mike would need to do this in the terminal. Luckily I knew to do a passwd after doing sudo to create a root account so I can use X as root if I chose. Not quite ready but it is gettig there.
But they dont integrate as well with macosx. For example at the college we were using Samba and LPAD. The opensource version had trouble integrating with Apple's version of Samba. Apple's version of Samba is what the students were the most familiar with. It was just a pain.
MacOSX is not a good unix, I do admit I do not own a mac but I had a brief job supporting macs and windows based pc's
MacOSX is a great windows replacement but have you tried upgrading macosx before? SHudder. First off things do not magically compile and Apple provides proprietary hooks for open source software like OpenSSL and LPAD. WIth Linux you can upgrade easily by compiling or using apt-get if you use a debian based distro like ubuntu. I personally think Apple wants you to become dependent on them whenever there is a security hole or a new feature in package X so you pluck down $$$ for the next versioa of MacOSX.
Linux is a much nicer for a workstation in this regard. I am sticking with Linux regardless how pretty macosx works. I like to upgrade and play around with the latest unix software.
HP is also going up in quality too since Carly left. In 2003 I would not touch a Compaq or HP, but now the RMA's are the lowest for compaq pressario laptops and HP Pavilians at the local bestbuy store. Its a big change.
Also people who are neopyhtes buy HP products because of the commericals they see on TV. THey just want a pc to do work and showing what the pc can do and including great software for graphics makes their life easier. ITs not like they can go just buy a Dell. They would need to know the number and website. For a neophyte driving to the closest circuit city or best buy is where you go to get a new system.
Why is this modded down? Its just this guy's experience iwt them. BTW my college hates Dells and I have seen them fail so much that the techs walk around with a deskette with their proprietary tcp/ip stack. I have never heard of this?
Here in so california prices went up 400% in only 5 or 6 years! Its insane as mexicans are now cramped in 8 or 9 per home and sleeping in RV's in driveways and garages. These houses that are setup like this are not in the hood at all. Its a bubble for sure. The population has not increased that much and now only 10% can afford the average home. Mathmatically something is wrong with this supply and demand situation at the moment in the housing market.
I mean 1 million dollars for an average 2 bedroom house when average salaries have gone down since 2000?
My gf wont let me even install it after my brother lost years of his life away from it. Also the fact her sister's husband spends 2 hrs a night on it doesnt help either.
THe box is still shrinkwrapped from last year.
I dont want to play it because I would be sad knowing what I am missing out. Sigh
With my gf its about spending time together and with her kids. I can't do that on wow but can watching tv or playing MarioKart.
So I play mariokart now with her and the kids for hours and win prizes. So the real question is how to get our gf's into wow and how the kids can join? PRoblem solved.
Well she has a negative thing for wow I have to fix first.
I have a wow box unopened from October 05. Why? My brother told my gf how he lost 2 years of his life to wow and some of my former college mates dropped out for playing continiously.
She gets pissed when I read slashdot for more than an hour and to put in wow would scare teh daylights out of her. So now I just read it at work.
I heard the same thing about palm pilot and their invincible PDA that was a must have. What is palm's share price? v$.23 a share the last time I looked and it owns less than 10% of the market. MS owns the other half.
MS did it in less than 3 years and created another monopoly!
You may have made that remark with sarcasm but alot of aspies have great relationships. Alot of women like sensitive men who are competent in what they do and smart. THey like nurturing as well as long as we make an effort to include them in our lives.
Everyone else in most 1st world countries work 40 hours a week. Infact its illegal to go over 45 or 50 in France. America as a result is leading in divorce. You may love what you do but when you age and you are in the death bed will you think of work or your wife?
I want to hack all day and play too but its not a reality. Work less and see if you can work on a Saturday morning if you can cut down the hours for the rest of the week. If your workplace doesn't allow this then its time to move on and let them hire a college grad who does not have such obligations. There is increasing evidence that addiction to work is becoming common as people become more isolated due to the internet and TV in our lives. Hanging out with others is not as fun. You need to break that and show your wife she is important. If she works as well she wont be impressed about your hours.
I have Aspergers and I am very happy in my long term relationship. Yes autism is common and more pervasively in IT related fields but that doesn't mean divorce. Infact she likes the fact I am different because I have to work harder on communication skills and it brings a certain amount of sensitivity that most men do not possess. Women who dig geeky guys who are competant in what they do are attracted to us.
I suppose its priority and setting time that women really want and they need to feel valued. Having an IT job does not mean ones marriage is set for failure but spending more hours there then at home is. What point is working hard if you do not spend your money and time with the family? She works too( well most women these days). I do know being selfish and playing wow is a no no with my current fiancee but she does not mind if I do so in moderation or play on the gamecube with her and the kids and include everyone. My 2 cents
Agreed.
Automatix2 will update Ubuntu with illegal fonts an dif you install xtf font rendering for Xorg the problem will go away. My desktop looks as sweet as WindowsXP under gnome as a result.
So you want to keep auditors out of your files.

Go have your memory replaced. I had the same problems with early versions of linux on a pentium1 until I replaced the ram.
Also try ubuntu Linux? I believe there is a powerpc version and Openoffice. From there you can try out the excellent KDE and gnome desktops.
But they dont integrate as well with macosx. For example at the college we were using Samba and LPAD. The opensource version had trouble integrating with Apple's version of Samba. Apple's version of Samba is what the students were the most familiar with. It was just a pain.
