The strength of Windows in the corporate desktop is that everything is integrated together. This is why phb's love Windows. Corba is a nasty nightmare that makes integration difficult and ole and com+ are much easier to use. Infact iwth vb.net you can create simple gui apps in a matter of minutes.
So is Dbus the answer for Ole and com? And if so when will it be ported to macosx and windows?
We need something to compete agaisnt microsoft on the desktop and also to help integrate different unix apps together. I can imagine sweet rad's and shell scripts for Linux gui apps.
You are forbidden to watch your own movies this way as it violates the DMCA and could land you in federal pound me in the ass prison if you tell others how to do it with their own movies.
What I dont understand is why is this legal for hollywood to do this? Why aren't they being sued or investigated for anticompetitive practices?
I learned algebra in 6th grade unknowingly by a math teacher teaching graphing on an AppleII using Logo (I think? ). I thought it was fun and I came up with idea's like how to find the midpoint of a line by subracting differences in X/differences in Y.
In 7th grade I had the same teacher and she taught us something called algebra. I was scared because I hated math and thought I was in over my head with this. Turns out it was fun and I realized something right off.
Everything math related is just computer lingo.
In actuality you are correct. When I did graphing and sloping and midpoints I thought cool I already learned how to do this last year on the computer Let x = 4 I typed in basic at home and did not even know its algebra. Transformation functions later on were cool because I wanted to use them in games.
You can learn math too by using computers and not vice versa. However the difference is I am more applied than theoritical than the students who took math first. Also math is not one of my favorite subjects so years of calculus do not appeal to me and seem like a waste unless you write compilers or engineering apps.
= 7.50/hr job at Staples and moving back in with my parents. This was back in 2001 when the.com crashed and I had to compete with everyone with years and years of experience who were laid off.
Also I had no job experience in IT at the time and didn't go to college. I figured the certifications would be a way to enter the field yet I was wrong.
I am older now with some college as I continue to go back to school and the labor market is improving. With minimal certifications you can work at geeksquad or some help desk position for as much as $14/hr today to start out. I now repair computers but this came after a few years of taking bad jobs and getting my associates. But get your degree if you want to go anywhere. Colleges today have a record number of students in them compared to the past. Employers are taking note and requiring degrees for everything. The babyboomer generation only had %24 of those with 4 year degrees. Today generation Y has %70+ attending college!
I was looking at homes in Passadena and could not find anything under 700k last summer. My gf has 2 kids so 3 bedrooms is a must. If you go to www.zillow.com you can see that homes have been going up 75% a year since 2000. Maybe things have changed in the market since you looked last.
I just pray that the bubble bursts soon because its just unaffordable here.
Meaning you have never seen this in a middle class neighborhood or the current situation is so bad that you have never seen this regularly?
I would not call my neighborhood upper middle class but all the homes are between 1200 and 1500sq feet with 3-4 bedrooms. but yes the neighbors sleep in the garage and in a van and there are several RV's with people sleeping in them in driveways here. The home I am in is worth 380k.
I live in Riverside which is a far eastern suburb of LA and there are people living in van's, rv's, garages while the rest of their family/families sleep 2-3 people per room in the tiny homes. No I dont live in the hood either but in a middle class neighborhood. Old time residents pay $600 a month for their mortage while newer residents pay $3000 a month for a similair place and 2-3 families need to combine together to afford the mortage. Its insane and it looks like the third world.
Its illegal to live like this but you have to in California. Even in LA where the average home is $700k and the average salary is 13k in the hood. I wonder if the mexicans are really having a better life here than in Mexico with these living conditions due to teh outrageous prices? Its just insane and doesn't make sense economic wise. I think a big bubble burst is called for.
But yes if you own property in California its time to move where you can sell your 110k home back in 98 for 400k and retire in a mansion in Texas.
I wish slashdot would cover more java oriented articles as its commonly used and not as lame as it once was.
Java 6 looks very cool from the desktop end with huge performance gains and the factory object model integrated with the threading with Swing makes gui apps more responsive and java programmers wont have to worry about using threading to make their programs look more responsive which is not as much as an issue with other languages.
The web 2.0 stuff is nice for webdevelopers for the server not to mention the gui's will look more native to the platform being used compared to previous versions of java. Java3d is fulling run on the GPU as well and is usable with java 6.
Nafta was drafted by the republicans and Clinton was a small minority of democrats who supported it. Mainly he did so because it would help with illegal mexican immigrants if they could all have jobs. OF course mexican plants then moved to China where its even cheaper as a result.
Bush is the number one supporter of outsourcing and even has people in the white house to help bussinesses lay off Americans and move to cheaper labor.
Actually your home state in Virginia is competitive. The republicans are in big trouble which is why they are creating press about terrorism bs. Its all political.
THe democrats have a fighting chance if the headlines stop talking about terrorism and focus on IRaq and high oil prices instead. But this year is special and you should vote. Virginia especially in the south is quite competitive.
A little flamebaitish language I see? Its not polite to bash someone on their political views. Especially if they are disagreeing with their whole republican party. BTW I am a democratic and lean middle left.
The republican party was not hta bad before Reagan. I think you are confusing neoconservatives with republicans. Go look it up in wikipedia? Neoconservatives who were once democrats believe it or not make up the current bulk of the republican party. They favor government involvement iwth aboritions, strong militiary, war hawking, and are very anti communist. Sounds very Reaganish to me though Reagan was not as extreme in the neocon movement like Cheney or the current administration by a long shot.
Nixon and Eisenhower I liked even as a democrat and McCain is part of the old republican party agaisnt corruption and in favor of limited government.
My advice to the grandposter is to support McCain in the next election and perhaps vote for a democrat in the current one. If your party losses this time the neocon nuts will split from the party and the more moderate old time republicans can take controll. they will be forced to do so if they appear to extreme like now to the American people.
If Clinton were still president I have a feeling this issue would not even be here.
The 13 stray democrats who voted for the bill did so because the republicans would make them look unpatrotic. Infact a well known congressmen from Georgia who lost both his arms in Vietnam lost his election in 2004 because he was viewed as unpatriotic due to his opposition to the Iraq war.
This is really getting insane.
Why are the republicans doing this? Elections are near and the democrats might take back one or perhaps both houses! So what do they do? Make all the headlines about national security to make the republican party in the mind of voters and to change the issue away from Iraq. Lets hope the strategy is not successfull as we don't have these morons in office for another term.
Vote democratic if you want change? Democrats are nothing are not anything by a long shot like the republicans. The democrats own website even has negative press about the bill yet the republican's is all hype and manipulative garbage. Where are you getting this idea that the democrats are jsut as extreme to the right as the republicans?
Democrats might not be perfect but are at least sane and would stop changing issues to cover terrorism and worshipping Bush when it suits the president best and might do something like plan timetables to leave Iraq and ballance the budget and save us from HMO's and high medical insurance premiums.
THe dems are people on my side while the republicans stand for the big aristocracy of the wealthy and corrupt. Dont vote for a third party that will ensure another republican victory. Yes things were much better in the Clinton years.
I lived with my parents while I went to school last semester and we had FIOS. The speeds ranged from 1.5 to 2.5 megs per second and the sytem still uses dsl for uploading data. Slashdot loaded a little quicker than regular DSl but most sites still only transfer data around 75-180k a second with no noticable difference. Bittorrent was still slow. I read last month that most ISP's mod down bittorrent and other p2p technology so I wonder if this was the case?
If you plan to use torrents avoid FIOS as its modded down heavily and most download speeds are about the same as stand alone DSL,
Last, the house I live at now has the highest speed of DSL offered by SBC at 768k a second. According to cnet's bandwith meter I get around 2 megs a second with plain old DSL. Its $15 cheaper per month than my parents FIOS and torrents download faster. Its just as fast.
My point is do not think FIOS is 100 megs per second of paradise because its not. The connection is only fiber to the central office where its routed with regular traffic under standard T3's.
I have to agree with this. Well most of it in the terms of proper process engineering and planning and using existing code.
My comment is going to sound windows centric but its common in the bussiness world. The reason Java is so popular is not because its a great language that is cross platform but because the java api's in javadocs are huge. There is a method for about anything you can think of. MS also advertises dont code it, include it with teh saying we develop the code so you dont have too.
VB is a very rich environment with alot of tools for very rapid rad. Yes the language is not too hot before vb.net took over but it saves alot of money with development time.
Development is expensive and error prone and using code can save development time and offer great integration with the platform your on. Linux is finally catching up in this area and a code rewrite is like a blueprint rewrite for a big housing development firm. Its expensive and slight modifications to an existing blueprint is much cheaper and less error prone since all teh bugs have been worked out.
Also I do disagree with the last paragraph saying you should kill projects. Good planning proper mrp and ROI with process engineering can eliminate such dead weight before they exist. Anything with more than a 3 year timeframe needs to not be developed.
Also for those who hate engineering being lost it is not being lost at all. More likely MVC and process engineering is what is needed and not computer science for 90% of real world problems. Schools need to teach more project management and planning and less calculus for students who want to be professional programmers.
Alot of FreeBSD users such as myself switched to Linux or NetBSD after the 5.x fiasco. All the recent benchmarks put NetBSD higher performance wise than Freebsd. Perhaps 6.x changes this?
Also NetBSD can handle really slow and old hardware well. Its used for embedded appliances like Sony's PSP. It scales well with little overhead.
Science buffs like the BSD's better than Linux because its easier to profile apps as Linux does many more things under the hood. If I had to build an appliance to measure something for my PHD I would chose NetBSD.
My laptop is perfect for the lap and never gets hot and is very light and compact.
The difference was I did research on chipsets and cpu's and tested them all out at the store. Yes, I have a slower centrino based on a 1.8 ghz p4 mobile but its quite snappy compared to my athlonXP and runs very cool and it supports linux very well.
I tested for heat at the store and it always stays cool to the touch. My compaq pressario is very small too which I liked and had th3 best keyboard.
So avoid the dual core cpu's and look fopr laptop vs notebooks with cool batteries? Yes they still can be bought.
The problem is most api's and libraries that are free use GPL instead of LGPL because GPL is what everyone uses. I think most authors are ignorant and think its ok to use gpl libraries in commercial products because its linking and actual modifiable code. But if they look at the license they would find static linking to a gpl library still requires teh whole program to be under the GPL. Thats the problem.
Mainly because its free. Schools have a strict budget and I doubt they have a few licenses for VS for VB. Java is free but I would not recommend it. I tried java without knowledge of c/c++ and had to drop the course in my freshmen year of school. After taking C++ I recieved an A for my java programming course in object oriented programming. Even a hello world program is complicated if knowledge of public and private and strange syntaxes without meaning (if your new to programming) are used.
The link is here and the help menu has homework assignments and tutorials for begineers. You can do windows based gui's and even graphics with sprites and primptives. Since its free you also can legally make cd's for your students to bring home which is cool too.
Considering Iran ordered Hezbollah to cause a war with Israel to distract attention of its program and its leader publically plans to destroy Isreal publically several times is cause for concern.
They already started a proxy war with Israel and mentioned the Lebannon war was proof that Israel must be destroyed. You want this country to have a nuclear weapon?
During the 1950's everything was made in the US with labor unions and a strong middle class followed. That was true prosperity and nothing was too far out of the common man's reach besides luxuries items.
To me this proves that the excuse to exploit people is to make more money and is based on greed. THe middle class is suffering while the upper middle class is getting rich and the gap is widening. Gas prices and rent more than doubled in 3 or 4 years yet our salaries have not and more and more factories are closing and heading to China for cheap labor.
... and you can get a free IPod too! Just tell 5 other friends and have them tell 5 more. The more it trickles down the more money you can get.
Please dont give anyone any ideas here? After the free Ipod craze 2 years ago I dont want another one with stock options.

If your broke this certainly does have an appeal.
If its not illegal it better well should be. Imagine if all the financial institutions in the world began doing this? if its legal then why not? They would make so much money.
