    This is 2017 and unless you have old win7 era hardware you will have problems. USB 3 ports, graphics, wifi /n or later, and even nVme will not work or BSOD. This reminds me of the XP holdouts the fact people are willing to install 8 year old software on new hardware doesn't make sense

    FYI you can easily disable Cortana and excess data collection metrics upon installation of Windows 10 creators edition. Infact, you have to OPT IN with Cortana asking you for permission to do her job. No really I just installed it fresh on a tablet.

    I do not understand the hate for the app store. Don't use it. I see what Microsoft was thinking as the appstore if properly supported can be a god send for children and even clueless users to install apps like Netflix, games, Hulu, and even VLC (yes it's on there) without them fucking up the machine or getting a virus (as apps there are secured and limited in acess). It is a royal PITA to make everyone a freaking local admin for those who standardize in laptops in the office! But if you lock them down you get calls at 9pm at night from a salesman asking why he can't print and install a driver for his airline itinerary. This is slashdot so if it is by MS it must be evil as we all know Linux is going to take over the desktop anyday now.

    But regardless, Windows 10 is far from perfect. I hate the fact it installs candy crush and some little girls game with witches by default. You can uninstall it but why should I and why wasn't a GPO available to block it?

    Correction visual studio 2017 has sweet features for Android under 10.

    Also Ubuntu for Windows is interesting too if you use other languages. Python is now included in vs 2017 but if you need a Linux feature you can use sudo apt get install to use packages you want. Xorg still not natively supported yet but I got vim and clang.

    You can thank Intel, not Microsoft for the hardware support. It is in Intel's best interests to see apps only running on 10 as it encourages conservative businesses hanging on to 7 with old hardware to upgrade == more money.

    I wrote a story last week here with Microsoft porting .NET core 2 0 to Linux. No it's not Mono but the real thing. Go to microsoft.com and download it?

    You will find Windows 10 much improved if you must use it. Windows 10 creators edition you can disable spyware, Cortana, and other things and can even postpone updates and even go into the current business branch releases Debian style ( with pro version). If you turn on accessibility options on under 7 you can opt to upgrade. The professional version also has Hyper-V virtualization included which is sweet and much better than the crappy VMware Workstation as Hyper-V is a full bare metal type 1 Hypervisor. You can enable it in the add or remove features in the pro version? I have Freebsd, pfsense, and Ubuntu virtual machines under it.

    Windows 7 is old now and getting towards EOL. If you're a developer 10 does have some sweet features with Android which uses it's Hyper-V technology requiring 10. It's ok now. Still not my favorite which is 7 but it has matured alot and fixed many of it's early quirks

    The point was to compete with Chromebook in the education sector by selling a light notebook PC with restricted ability to install junk like games not approved by the school administration.

    The point is to keep it an education tool and not an entertainment device.

    I know. It would be amazing if Microsoft invented some way to manage settings in a group environment. Perhaps call it a directory of services and use templates of registery settings as a policy or some sort to allow only store apps installation. Too bad nothing is available to do just that?

    As a good techie /. nerd I always buy my own modems and routers. Comcast as much as I hate them do allow third party approved modems. I bought a Motorola surfboard. It is not Docsys 3.0 and I get concerned texts every now and then but it works fine so no reason to change.

    So even with an unapproved older modem it will still work. Maybe I can't download at 200 mb/s but at 100 mb/s it works fine.

    Bitcoin will go up in value once a recession hits just like gold. It is a great time to buy if you have the money as stocks do not pay dividends anymore anyway so it's no different.

    When the next recession hits and prices surge past $50,000 or more per coin is the time to sell and buy stocks. Yes, it sounds ludicrous but people said the same about gold. With trillions upon trillions of assets Wall Street has you think they want to keep their money in stocks?? Hell no, gold and bitcoin will skyrocket and every investor will fight with trillions of dollars to buy these so I think $50,000 maybe even $500,000 a coin is quite realistic as we have nowhere near 1,000,000,000,000 invested yet.

    Nasdaq hits 5000, everyone started piling in, and then came the big crash. This is no different

    Actually, this is different. A stock is inherently worth the value of future profits. Once it became clear these companies would never be significantly profitable, it was clear that the stocks were way overvalued. Bitcoins have no inherent value, so any valuation is just as "valid" as any other. People were predicting imminent collapse when Bitcoin passed the "ridiculous" value of $1.

    Sorry Bill. Stocks do not pay dividends anymore so no future profits. Just some guy MIGHT pay more than what you bought it for. With bitcoin at least you can buy things with it. I think when the next recession hits Gold and bitcoin is going to skyrocket and you are going to kick yourself when you didn't buy in at only $5,000. Serious hundreds of thousands of dollars per coin is right around the corner once all the big banks start buying them up when a recession hits. Where else are you going to put your money?

  15. All investments are an "educated" gamble

    Sigh. In the old days back when stocks REQUIRED dividends it wasn't. You bought stocks once and you got a share of the revenue. That is how it is SUPPOSED to work. When you retire you check out with the revenue generated from your share.

    Now they do not pay dividends and the valuations are well over 30 years to break even if it did pay a dividend. Worse the investors compensate themselves like it is the firms money (in the old days) and not the clients money so they take a cream of the earnings. It is ridiculous.

    But there are still some good small caps that pay dividends if you can find them and do not daytrade but leave them and let them generate revenue.

    Other than the part about .Net I agree with what you said. But Java has a lot of momentum with companies like Oracle and IBM behind it, so it'll be around for a while as it becomes less and less relevant.

    Yeah for legacy. No new projects use it. COBOL is still big too and will never die. But my point is lets make it legacy as both COBOL and Java did not keep up and earned their spots

    You have to start somewhere and yes there is a shortage. I am in the I.T. field now struggling as a senior desktop support guy. I realized it doesn't take a ginuse to plug in a monitor and learn active directory. Education or not I have head hunters calling me for $15/hr jobs. WHAT! I would kill to make more than $55,000 again.

    Sorry but I have no sympathy. Most kids today who are college educated make $15/hr or around $35,000 a year. This is finance, business administration, liberal arts, etc. WHy should someone fresh out of school make $70,000 a year coding? Something is not right.

    Economics dictate that is a shortage and not everyone needs a senior SCUM greenbelt certified six sigma c++ code jockey to work on their sharepoint site in the office. If they can increase the supply then wages will decrease but not for senior level engineers.

    I can code basic stuff and did so in college as slashdot advised me to change majors from computer science to business in the early 2000s as there would be no jobs. WORSE ADVICE EVER!!! I may not equal your level but I do not want your job. Just any junior developer job where I can finally earn a living and get some respect.

    Let it go. Java had it's day in the sun during the .com era (no pun intended). It failed after Sun struck out bigtime on what could have been and the biggest thing in quite some time. .NET is taking over large scale stuff, and newer node.js, angular, and even Python for the small to medium projects. Java is outdated and Sun and then Oracle left it out to rot by not making native compilers and obsessing over making it work with Solaris and forcing developers not to do win32 only. Meanwhile Python for some reason doesn't have this problem.

    It is legacy and a security risk and will never have a native look and feel and compiler. c# is what Java could have been and keeps getting innovations like Linq and generics (I might be outdated as I haven't touched Java in 10 years on generics). Let it die we have other newer things now.

    I,T, is like the medical field. Employers love someone who can do it all but you do not see a hospital hire a doctor who can do cardiac surgey, treat renal patients, and also know all about nuclear medicine for cancer patients, etc.

    You specialize. Medical school teaches the basics but to know something in depth you got to pick a specialty with networking you have many layers of hardware, software, and networking. Some are techs, admins, consultants, architects, and coders.

    Few people can become a professional athlete with a couple of weeks training. Bootcamps (for pretty much any hard skill) can be effective to learn certain things, but they are no substitute for the talent and level of commitment and effort required to work at the top level of a coveted field.

    We do not need only a few dozen elite programmers. Just someone who can code at a junior level position. Remember you were a n00b too as well back in your day.

    I do wonder as an I.T. professional who does not code but did in college and know the basics of structures, data types, and object oriented programming if I should do it myself as I hit the end of my path currently. I can learn and put something basic together right now if you hand me documentation

    Ok folks. Here is my background. I have 16 credits of programming in college but changed majors to Business Administration as Slashdot told me all I.T. jobs would be gone by now ... WORST ADVICE EVER! I know the basics of object oriented programming, structures, and doing basic programs. I have around 6 recent years doing I.T. support and gradually worked my way up to Senior Desktop Support Tech. I am at the time of my worth.

    My options are either to update my MCSE to get into System Administration as I have worked with Active Directory and Office 365, Exchange, and a little bit of SharePoint but Human Resources remind I do not have experience with servers and VMWare ESX which is frustrating as I need to get in first to get experience.

    I also am opened to coding.

    My question is has anyone got a successful career changing attending these bootcamps? Employers reading this have you hired anyone and they were a good fit for jr level development work?

    What is the truth here?

    Are wages so low that people would rather be unemployed, allowing employers to go the H1B route? I also hear that there is a lot of H1B fraud, in which case higher wages won't help.

    People say there are lots of skilled workers, but also that all the young workers are idiots with no clue and low ability levels.

    Women are apparently clever for avoiding tech jobs, but for some reason men are desperate for them and unable to do the jobs women are doing instead.

    I just want to know the truth. I don't live in the US so it's hard to know based on Slashdot and crappy "news" articles.

    Here is the deal to meet the endless list of MUST HAVE's your demand as an employee goes higher than what they want to pay.

    So let's say they want someone with 7 years experience working with Android and 5 years working with HTML 5 as an example? Let's say you started playing with HTML 5 when your employer still had IE 6 5 years ago and written some game in Android SDK when you were the first kid on teh block with an Android phone what do you think you could get offer wise today? My guess is people would be begging to hire you and would be offering $90,000 ayear and offer to pay for relocation on the boot.

    This other company is used to paying $60,000 a year. After all that is what an H1B1 brings and what during 2008 - 2013 could buy so they offer that as the max and do not budge.

    What anyone desperate who hates themselves for not learning coding or going into PC repair instead of coding would KILL for $60,000 ayear! But they do not meet the lists of requirements. I suppose bootcamps tailer to such folks.

    The real question to me is are employers willing to pay $60,000 a year willing to take someone without real world experience outside the bootcamp? If employers are willing to do temp or contract and pay $55, 0000 for coders who are new but worked in other areas then they may work for both parties. Remember you slashdotters laughing reading this were n00bs at one time too.

    Eventually those of us making $55,000 coding in 5 years can then make $80,000 and greater. Indians are doing just that now as they are quiting h1B1 farms and taking on clients directly as they have 7 years experience and can make alot more.

    So the short answer is employers are unwilling to hire those on unemployment and only want those who are worth faaar more to make Human Resources happy with their checklists. These Americans will thumb their nose down as they can get more elsewhere.

    What is funny is these companies are free market and do not want to pay taxes and blame workers for not bettering themselves. As soon as workers demand more they cry to the government that they can't find enough qualified workers. You can't have one way.

    I see wages are starting to go up but slowly. Companies are doing what we do during a recession. We dip our toes in and demand everything and see how that works? Then gradually make concessions until we get another job. Companies want to drag this out and our doing what they did from 2008 - 2013 as it worked previously. Of course they are going to avoid to pay senior level performance if they can get away with it first.

    I am going to sound racist but I am not.

    The reason they pay minimum wage is not because of greed. It is because of illegals coming across the border willing to work under the table. Jobs that paid $50,000 a year in 1985 pay $8/hr now as it doesn't take a genesis to put a nail through a piece of board. You do not even ahve to be born here or speak English. I do agree some shitty houses and foundations happen as a result from unskilled labor but they don't care.

    But that is unique to that industry. Food service and farming always paid jack shit as teenagers and family members used to do these jobs. Now the same folks do these as well as out of place factory workers who can't find anything else.

    Again, not racist but just stating facts about supply and demand. When you have 20,000,000 extra unskilled workers come in you can bet those unskilled jobs will go down in demand even when the housing boom hit.

    If you CAN do your job, it is unlikely they will fire you because of a "lie" on your resume.

    Don't bet on it. I've seen very capable engineers get fired because they lied about something on their resume and it wasn't discovered until later.

    Companies like people who can do their jobs, but not if those people aren't trustworthy. And nothing indicates "not trustworthy" faster than lying on your resume.

    I will second that. If the employer ever needs to cut costs or you make an executive or someone in HR mad for political reasons guess what they do? They call HR and do a check on your application from X years ago. What you didn't go to that college? What this guy only worked here as a JR for 3 years not 5??!!! Fire HIM!

    Problem solved. Shitty but just because you can do the job doesn't mean your job is secure if you make an executive angry. This will dismay many European readers but in the states this a common practice. It is nice when you need to fire someone and you are worried about a lawsuit. Lying on your resume rather than saying employee Y performed poor is easier to justify in the court of law. To top it off some states like Texas you do not have to pay unemployment to boot. After all if the discharge was misconduct you can save money.

    But yes honesty is important too but not the only way it is bad. Also just because I study Hyper-V or VMWare from a book doesn't mean I can handle a crises with a BSOD or doing something where I can't take down the VM in production. There is no way to learn this without experience. Sure anyone can install or configure a VM but a real production environment you need someone with experience to do the job as there is no other way to perform it. Best to say Yes I worked with it and I studied this and consider myself an entry level in that area but I can learn.

    This maybe fine if there is a senior guy on the time I can work with just as an example. That senior guy will know if I lie.
