    You need to learn how to play the game. Do you think all of those Indian foreign workers have any experience. They are reading the books on the flight over. You need to update your resume with the skills that you have and what you can have immediately and adjust your past experience accordingly to get the job.     Wow. Very unethical and your employer will find out you lied or fluffed it in a few months when they fire you. Now you loose too. The Indians well they kind of expect it as the contract states you must use them for X amount of months/years or pay millions in a termination fee etc. As an individual? HA! Good luck with that kind of negotating power. They will just fire you if they do not like you.

    I am much better now but lying to an an employer is also lying to yourself if you think you can do the job and you pay the cost as the employer will just replace you. You can't just replace your employer that easily unless you earned it with years of experience.

    I had too. I left the IT field for awhile and had to come back in. NO one would touch me and recruiters get bottom of the barrel temps and contractors. I moved in with my parents and made shit for 2 of them. Then as I gained experience I had the power to tell them better jobs and they started putting me on more assignments.

    I credit them to giving me my last job where they loved me and I made an offer to work permanently. If you are down on your luck and have a large gap on your resume a recruiter and temp agency is your best bet to gap your hole and give you some references fast. They help too as many of the temp jobs have different technologies so your skillset explodes vs sitting using the same tools year after year at one permanent employer.

    At your level yeah no one deals with recruiters but kids and those going through rough times they are a God send.

    Please it started with Bush which is how Obama beat McCain in 2008.

    I do not want to get into politics but the economy is strong. In July we added almost 400K jobs and it has been growing since 2014. It is true if you have a highschool diploma and worked in a factory or coal mine you are screwed. But for us educated and skilled to semi skilled types there are jobs to gain. Not all companies want to pay what we are worth but you can ignore them and still be hired.

    I was on Ziprecruiter where I had prescreening questions. 1 out of 5: Have you ever worked in a managed services company before? I put in No. BOOM app ended. FYI there are only 2 managed service companies where I live so good luck with that HA.

    If corporations cared at all about unemployment, they already know exactly what they could do to remedy that problem: Let the cream rise to the top. That is to say, offer additional training to existing highly skilled employees, so that they can easily qualify for the next job up the ladder, and then move them up. Then fill the now vacant lower level jobs with people who are presently unemployed and living on the street (or in their parents basement). The newly hired wage earners will be thrilled just to have a job at all, and won't be quite as picky about how much they're earning, and the highly skilled workers will be thrilled to get the raise, and to be recognized for their contributions.

    The problem, as I see it, is that far too many companies are more interested in the bottom line than in anything else. And one of the easiest ways to turn a profit is (and always has been) to milk existing employees for all that they're worth for as long as possible, and make them do tasks above their pay level, because they "can't find anyone qualified for that position, right now"... which basically causes that old adage, "You have to move out to move up," to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I've moved out because of that, myself. If you're in the workforce at all, you've probably done it, too.

    And here's where it gets even more frustrating: the "requirements" for any given position do not remain static. It's quite common for employers to adjust the requirements based upon the skillset of the person who just left that position. "Hey, Ralph became a freaking genius at SharePoint while he was working for us. We can't possibly hire someone who knows less than him, now! Change that job req for his position to include senior SharePoint experience, okay? Years of experience? I dunno... how long did Ralph work here? That long? Really?"

    And thus, the position that Ralph left -- specifically because he was being underpaid for the skills he'd gained over his years there -- is now entirely un-fillable. Because nobody with those skills would take the job, at the offered pay.

    Employers shoot themselves in the foot like that, all too often. My previous employer did it, too... that's why they're my previous employer. And over the past few weeks, I've sat by and watched as my up-line supervisor is being run through the beginnings of the scenario I've described above... so I would imagine she's currently evaluating her options.

    The wheel turns, and the cycle repeats itself.

    Like we don't do the same. When I was unemployed I had recruiters hang up on me when I told them what I wanted. I had to adjust lower and lower and be willing to do temp to hire before I was taken a few months later. The economy changed and I wanted to run it to my benefit of course. I wanted a job that was filling that paid a lot with security. The employer always wants to put extra tasks like having the IT guy also serve as the secretary in the front to greet people and answer phones (HA).

    Employers are doing the same thing with their toes in the water. During a recession the employer wins every time. During a boom like now or in the 1990s we win. I like to look at it like an auction with bids.

    What HR is discovering is they assume conditions are the same and they do not have to pay more and can still demand the moon before they will even talk to you. THese companies will start to offer more in the coming months as they discover the real demand.

    Not too long ago in 2011 you could find someone happy to work for 70 hours a week and come in every weekend who had experience with VMWare Horizons for only $45,000 a year. Wahoo it is a job! Shoot so many out of work folks they would fight over it.

    In 2017 these guys who took it are now leaving for $90,000 a year jobs now that they have the VMWare Horizons experience down to a senior level. HR still wants to pay them $22/hr as a contractor and expects 5 years experience as that is what the budget is set and has always worked.

    They are in for a big surprise as the economy has changed and shifted back to the workers. Compensation is always lagging behind reality as both parties the worker and employer are greedy and want the most.

    My prediction is more outsourcing is going to become popular again as Trump is working to increase visas as companies HATE paying more. It happened during the 1990s and again during the late 2000s when salaries went back up again.

    VMWare is expensive. I know I am going to modded down as people LOOVE to think I work for Microsoft here, but Hyper-V is lighter and easier to configure and much cheaper. Your wife should consider it if her employer already has a license for Windows Server?

    The problem is HR wants someone in percise wording that matches the job description with years of experience and rather be understaffed than take a risk. Worse, they use software programs to do the work for them which filter 100% of all the qualified candidates out.

    This is why the H1B1 visa is popular. It is not about cost savings anymore. It is the Indian firms will lie and make a resume that matches the description as no American can do the job etc.

    In the old days if you had 7 years of experience in programming in one language and doing the same work then you can learn another language in a similair role etc. NOT today! You need to have ONLY that language. Worse, you can have the same language AND same kind of work experience but still be not qualified. It is because your coverletter and resume didn't have the keyword % of the descriptions. Or you have done it for 10 years, but your last position where you have 3 years experience doesn't touch what the job entails so therefore you are not qualified.

    What needs to change is managers need to do the filtering and not HR and God FORBID do not use Taleo to filter out resumes first. You will get liars and Indians and just because I have done a job for 5 years doesn't mean I am any good.

    Competence is job title and projects you work on. Not based on how many years you did the same tasks which is all HR looks at. I would take a senior software engineer who did design work in another language or different tasks then to pick a mediocre guy who only did 5 years experience in the same tasks over and over which HR would choose.

    That is not being an asshole. If I blew $900 for a new motherboard/CPU/DDR 4 ram combo you bet I would want blood if what I bought turned out to be bugged and useless.

    The customer is always right.

    For that kind of money it is reasonable to want thorough QA and a quick RMA by AMD if any last minute bugs did make it.

    Thread ripper is not effected as it was tested with Linux as it is based on the Xeon competitior based Epyc. Ryzen I heard was fixed but I do not know. AMD stated it did little testing with linux as it assumed only Windows users would use Ryzen but Ryzen2 would have thorough testing like the threadripper ones which are server/workstation based.

    I too would avoid AMD this round as much as I want to cheer them. I will cut them some slack as the Ryzen architecture is brand new and a redesign from scratch. Remember the Core2Dous were blasted by Theo from OpenBSD who listed a large errata with them. If you send an assembler instruction to store data and use graphics the CPU would crash so you would have to write the kernel around the bugs.

    I may consider AMD still in the future. The question is was the bug fixed and is hardware related or manufacturer related. Can a microcode update fix it?

  12. That is Intel propaganda. They are not glued Ryzen cpus no more than Xeons are glued i7s ... well maybe the rushed i9 is :-D

    The Threadripper is based on Ryzen but has NUMA memory and deeper stage pipelines and caching for things like Linux support which is not impacted by the bug of the cheaper counterparts. It has more cache and also supports quad memory channels which is the bandwidth you talked about.

    Also the regular Ryzen does use less power than an i7. I just wanted to point this out as people still say this and think you blow something like $100 a month in power (laughable false but I see that in fanboy posts on youtube).

  13. The motherboard is expensive as it is designed with NUMA support and other enterprise level hardware. The threadripper is a remarked server grade Epyc CPU line which will compete with Xeons.

    The 1900X is not worh the extra 5% improvement over an 1800x which will be much cheaper if you include the $50 CPU savings and the cheaper motherboard. However the x1900 will have guaranteed Linux support which some of the Ryzens are experiencing bugs though.

    THe purpose is by ultra conservatives and libertarians who want 0 intervention is to use something where the government or banks can't do anything to destroy value.

    In their eyes if government didn't exist then inflation and crashes would NEVER EVER happen. So what can the central bank do? Either the libertarians and ultra conservatives will be right and it will never crash as that only happens due to the government interfering with the free market or it will go down and the investors with that philosophy will be laughed at with a told you so rebuke.

    Since bitcoins are not considered money I can picture the FBI or an act of congress to ban or it put an end to the chain and kill it that way. This will cause people to get their muskets from their fireplaces 1776 style, but everyone else doesn't consider that theft as it is not real money.

    Not even. HP made me so upset. They bought it and within 30 days discontinued it?? Why buy it? They didn't even give it a chance. Didn't even try. The just layed in front of Apple while they walked over them and it became apparent for those who did not want iphones or Apple that Android was the alternative.

    The hatred is what HP and Palm did and missed the boat while the IPhone taken over and then Android.

    WebOS today is 10 years obsolete so it is best to let it go. You will have better luck ressurecting WindowsPhone then that as at least some few people still use them and their are up to date tools.

    It looks like we are stuck with Android or IOS which I HATE. I do not like Android which I know will get modded down here, but after using WebOS, some cheap semi smart phones, and even WIndows Phone 8.0/8.1 I have to say the only thing going for Android is it's appstore. There is no reason why a mobile OS can't be lightning fast on 512 megs of ram and boot within a few seconds. My Nexus 6P takes 2 minutes to load and runs out of battery and heats up FAST.

    IOS? Well it's pretty. Women love it for that reason and it too has a rich appstore. But you can't even cut and paste the last I looked. WOW.

    I really wish we had 3 or better yet 4 different operating systems like we have browsers today. I would (yes slashdot moderators are going to mod me for saying this) but would still use Windows Phone if it was supported and had an appstore and or WebOS if it was more updated and had a rich ecosystem as well.

    My non removable battery (p[laced on puprose of course) is about dead on my $700 Nexus 6P. I dread buying another expensive phone and even finding a phone with a removable battery so I do not have to throw it out every every year is maddening. I may consider the Pre if it has such a thing. I mean if you spend $700 on a PC there is a reasonable expection of up to 10 years if the machine is taken care. Why not phones?

  17. Comcast and others have been bribing public officials to make sure repairs do not get completed or put up additional red tape so delays are inherent. I do not think Google was strong enough to stand up to these guys as yes repairing a crushed conduit does require a permit and who else happens to be in the same pipes under your sidewalk? You guessed it COMCAST and AT&T. You bet they can just say no to the city claiming they do not approve yada yada for many years and Google would need to hire some lawyers to fit it out. Likely not worth the cost so why bother?

    In the case of Linux it would be more CPU bound because of all the files that could be compiled in parallel as it is a big project. A 16 core 32 thread system can work on alot of .c and .h files at a time.

  21. Back in the days, most people agreed that P4 was performing better and much cooler than the Athlon XP. You usually needed very good cooling to run any interesting workload on an Athlon XP if you wanted it to be stable.

    THe Athlon XP was light years ahead because it had an integrated memory controller on the cpu and not the chipset chip on the board. It also had more FPU units and didn't have long scalar pipelines with terrible memory latency with Rambus ram like the Pentium IV.

    I call BS as well as the P4 was for the clueless who bought Dells and bought Intel for brandname only. THe only thing good about it was the extreme edition in 2004 had hyperthreading. Meanwhile AMD had the Athlon MP for dual cores long before core2duo

  22. Yes they are very similiar but Threadripper is their consumer version of the upcoming Xeon competitor.

    AMD admitted it did little testing on the regular Ryzen line as most consumers would be running WIndows anyway and admitted in the future they will test this out. FreeBSD is also impacted by the same bug where things get out of order and corrupted under heavy loads.

    Threadripper has more cache and a different caching and memory as it supports NUMA and non-NUMA for server oriented loads and this is where the bug is here.

    Unfortunately, this makes me very cautious to purchase an AMD system as it does have a reputation of being bargain grade. But, it is a brand new architecture from scratch. I maybe open to Ryzen2 or Threadripper2 after some of the bugs are worked out.

    There aren't many people crazy enough to pay over $4,000 each for Monopoly dollars, though.

    Like it or not, any item (even Bitcoin) is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Whether or not it will still be worth $4,000 a year from now it anyone's guess at this point. It could become the next Mastercard, or the various world governments might outlaw the currency and start prosecuting enough users to make it's value plummet.

    Personally, the lack of certainty either way is enough to make me stay away at this point.

    No you are not. Oracle lies which is why they killed opensource and clean room implementations by judicial activism. Google uses Dalvik which does not contain a single line of code written by Oracle that they somehow stole and now own thanks to their lawyers.

    Dalvik is a clean room implementation and does not even use a traditional JVM and would still be around if Oracle didn't threaten to sue Apache out of existence. Another reason not to consider Java as it is immoral to support Oracle.
