They are.... Boy had we fun cracking dads password back in the day (BIOS password, this was in the DOS days). Guess what: we did succeed. Taught him to use more secure passwords;-)
Our computer (back in the nineties) was in the living room. There was only one computer and we had to share it amongst us: we kept a log who was how many hours on the machine. You did two hours? Sucks to be you: brother could kick you off... Yet, I managed to learn programming (by myself) on it, do my homework (which wasn't common back then... Reports were handwritten, not printed as I did... always got extra marks for that though), etc... Research was using encyclopedias and books.
Also, our home machine didn't have an Internet connection until 1998. The biggest distraction from doing the homework, programming, etc, these days, is not TV or anything you find in the living room. It's the Internet itself.
As for porn? From what I see, kids aren't interested in it until puberty... After that, anything is fair game. It's not as back then we didn't know where our dads porn collection was.... Sure, there is more disturbing stuff on the Internet, but kids tend to simply say "Eeeew, that's gross" and that's pretty much it. Makes me think, when I first saw a blowjob picture, it's exactly what I thought.... (Porn Magazine found on the street near our school, and given the school, I'm pretty sure I was between 7 and 10) Go figure, I like blowjobs now... Well, on the receiving end. Too bad my wife still finds them gross;-)
I'm not familiar with this... I never heard about ancient greek sex predators being sent to the temple of Venus (Venera's temple) and what happened to them (getting raped, I presume you imply that... ). Could you explain and prehaps provide a link or two?
The reluctance of people in the 'educated' world to have kids is wierd[sic].
Weird? Only if you ignore the economic implications of having children. Educated people still love their children and don't want them to suffer and have a decent quality of life. Uneducated people don't tend to think in economic terms, meaning, well the kid is there, they give minimum care (best they can, I'm not saying they don't love their children) and you end up with another uneducated child. Contrast to the educated people, who invest in their children and depending on the talent of the child, may still end up with an uneducated child.
I've heard that in the educated world, kids are more and more considered "status symbols" because you need to make quite a lot to actually sustain a family.
I like the idea of thinking of children as colonizing the future, but don't overdo the Nietzsche.
Hmmmm, I have a Fujtsu-Siemens Pa 1510, bought on sale in January 2007[1] (Just before the Vista release, they tried to get rid of XP machines, as Vista was "the future" *grin*). Still works today. Now the battery, yes, it's dead... Bought a new one for 75€ at Duracelldirect. Works fine again. Sure, it's only a few hours charge and not 7.
Now, I agree that Mac laptops are good value if you buy high end, but plainly stating that PCs are crap and will "fall apart" or "need to be retrieved from the landfill", are greatly exaggerated. Mine has scratches on the lid, but that's about all one can say about it.
The main problem with my laptop is the graphics chipset. No more ATI support and the open source drivers on Linux are so slow, it's a pain to run... Windows XP runs perfectly fine though (fully updated) and if I want to play the odd Halflife 2 or Portal session, it will work just fine.
I must do something right with my laptops, most have long and happy productive lives (5 years++)... Don't get me started on my iBook G3 that only lasted 3 years and had a logic board failure, which was a known problem.... but of course, I found out only after warranty. *sigh*
[1] It cost 795€ on sale, but back then there were no 500€ laptops and this was pretty much the lowest price-point you could get at the time.
Yes, it used to deserve it. I tried the different versions over time (was it starting with 11.04?), and I hated every waking second of it. Only with 12.04, it started to behave as something I could use. They did a pretty good job. Sure, left and right there can be some improvements, but it's quite fine now. I use it mainly because I eat my own dogfood, meaning I use this as an "install and forget distro" for newbies. However if there are problems, I need to know where what is, and that's why I use it myself.
I thought that too... In 12.04 it's decend and my fears that my mom (who ran Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, up until last month) wouldn't be able to adapt were unfounded. Not a single question....
Basically, Unity doesn't deserve the rap it gets... It eats too much resources, if there is anything I can say about it.
Like this? I have one, works ok... Not extatic about it, but does the job. Was damn cheap too. I have the smaller model, the bigger model promises 10 hours. My initial review. Haven't played much with it. It lies by my bed for the occasional sysadmin tasks when I get alerts.
Ehm, no, that is not backup. As a matter of fact, you might get robbed and then all your precious storage is gone. What about accidental damage (water damage: bag falls in water). No, the the best way is network backup, and I'd do it with rsync. What you suggest is not avoiding the problem: it's thinking that you avoid the problem.
For me, when I'm on travels: my devices need to be completely destroyable, losable and robable.... without losing much (max one day).
Of course he's playing on Linux. I have exactly the same experience as he does with the odds that a game will work. One of the appeal of the Humble Bundles is that you get a Linux version. Many of us Linux users, do like the occasional game, but won't maintain a Windows installation just for that. So, yes, I still buy the Humble Bundles, and I take the risk. If it doesn't work. Too bad. If it works, fine... It's not as if I spend all that much (Usually 25USD per bundle)
I have bought a Dell XPS 15 (L502x) last year in June. Quad Core i7, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD (that is pretty lame, I admit), screen at 1920x1080, NVidia graphics, Wifi, Bluetooth, HDMI, eSATA. It was on sale, with a coupon for 525€ including shipping. It definitely isn't flimsy in any stretch of the word.
I am a fan of Apple, for people who are compter illiterates, it's better they pay more to have less problems later. For techs, I advise to go PC, and keep an eye on bargains... You get the best of the two worlds and if you like you can go Linux (which I usually do, but this particular machine is rarely used and dual-boot)
Well, the "Full install CD" was 5€ or so. I don't remember exactly, but that's fully worth it if you want a non-crapified Windows. That said, I have to admit that I bought that Quad i7 laptop, installed 7 fresh and then I didn't touch it ever since. Bought it June last year or so.
My Linux nettop just seems to do all I ask from it. Coulda saved me the money of the new laptop, but it was such a steal at 525€. Oh, well, I'll surely find a use for it one of these days.
I don't get it myself either, but I suspect it's because they don't want to look cheap, especially for their "higher placed employees". Management seems to think that "only the fastest" will do. I work for a small company, and they make my life a living hell if a new employee comes because they don't want to put the money in it. Or better said, their priorities are all skewed. New developer comes? Don't spend too much on new material (you know how a full dev evironment, several test servers, etc... can bog down a machine).... New financial controller comes? Oh, she needs something sturdy, fast, lots of RAM. I budgetted two machines, i5 based/4GB RAM which is already overkill and a expensive i7 laptop with 8GB RAM nifty graphics card, which cost quite a lot of money. I fully expected them to go for the much cheaper i5. Nope... Went for the most expensive one... After all "she will do Excel a lot".
I stopped arguing with management about these things. Everyone gets what management wants to pay for them. Goddamnit, I need a new job...
Funny, I just ranted about exactly the same below.... You're not alone: I think it's stupid too. Especially the double standard regarding "Nigger". What can you do, eh?
Cool. I used it a few years ago, but left it behind me as it wasn't compatible with my Wacom (pressure-awareness was lost). Does it include that yet? I admit, this would be hardly a concern for schoolchildren, though.
Thanks for pointing it out. I knew about Pinta. I tried it out a few years ago. It wasn't pressure-aware with my Wacom. That's why I ditched it and continued using The GIMP. Has it become any better? Back then it' really was a bit more than a glorified paint, and Paint.NET was lightyears ahead.
They are.... Boy had we fun cracking dads password back in the day (BIOS password, this was in the DOS days). Guess what: we did succeed. Taught him to use more secure passwords ;-)
Let me think?....

The same sources as those you use when you this professionally. Not much of a choice there really.
The poster is probably just confused by the fact that there are 64 bit packages available, with 32 bit binaries inside.
A local SIP/POTS gateway?

You! I'll have to explain my monthly credit card statements to my wife now...
I also use this technique.
I missed that article.... So, the AC pointed me to something I am interested in... That said, Kickstarter will ruin me in the long run.

Touchpiss? Something like this?
That looks amazing! Thank you!
Very popular with the kids. I know a few kids who got an original EEE and it came with TuxPaint. One of the most used programs.
