As far as I can see, here in Europe you're supposed to get your general education in high school (at least the levels that give you access to University). I didn't dare to generalize, because I remembered that the UK schooling system is fundamentally different and the Frenchies do their thing too. (For example, a "Grand École is considered better than a University)

  2. US-only problem? on Ask Slashdot: CS Degree Without Gen-Ed Requirements? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I guess this is a US-only problem. When I started my computer science degree at the University of Antwerp, it was pretty much only computer science. We had a few credits in economics, but that was really just general economics and that's it.

However, what are you expecting from studying CS? It's most likely not what you think it is. It's basically math, automata, algorithms, computability theory and stuff like that. If you plan to be a computer programmer and only that, you already have the skills required (even though, you probably make certain avoidable mistakes by if you don't know about computing theory).

If it is to have better chances to get a job interview, I can understand...

I don't regret having a computer science degree, it was very interesting, but it's not a course "how to become a better programmer".

Anyone considering computer science, should ponder the words of one of the greatest computer scientists of all times: "Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes", Edsger Dijkstra.

People are making assumptions that planets outside of our solar system are composed of 118 elements, and that is all. This is a dumb assumption to make.

May I ask why it is a dumb assumption to make, that everything existing is composed of the matter we know? Many elements (like gold) are made in events like these: supernovas, as normal stellar fusion allows only elements up to iron to be synthesized within stars.

What do you suggest anything else is made of? Antimatter? Why? It's not impossible, but very improbable and on top of that it wouldn't change all that much except we'd better never get into direct contact with such material.

Also keep in mind that from the scientific point of view, anything we cannot observe is indistinguishable from not existing. That doesn't mean that unobservable object/thing/essence/whatever doesn't exist, but it makes no scientific sense to talk about it. If the object/thing/essence/whatever finally is observed, then we can talk. Our Universe is defined by what we can observe. So if there is something that is so far away that it hasn't reached us yet by electromagnetic radiation (basically, "what we can observe"), it doesn't exist in our universe.

The software phones are horrible. I agree, I've tried some and none really convinced me.

A big company like Google needs to get behind it, integrate it with is services and make a client that will become the defacto most popular software phone. I might see them do that if they really are serious about the Chromebooks. Skype won't run on it, with Microsoft owning it, it won't get implemented.

Of course, in the end the choice will be between Microsoft or Google, which to many slashdotters is not really a great choice either.

If it really were that easy, it would exist. Superficially, you have indeed described what is necessary to do the deed and you claim that the rest is just implementation details. I don't know all that much about SIP except being able to configure hard-phones and asterisk servers, but I guess one could provide video as a SIP extension.

Microsoft may be greedy and all, but that's very unlikely. Skype has been a consumer-oriented technology trying to upsell to companies (a bit like the anti virus companies of the day yonder). Expect this to be available to all Windows versions, except perhaps "Starter". However, expect it only to be available for Windows 7. Linux support will be lackluster (it wasn't already stellar in the first place) and be abandoned because of "lack of interest". The OS X version will be maintained but will always be feature wise behind and Apple will simply start a competing technology.

What I could see, is that it gets bundled with Microsoft Office or so... Under the guise of "collaboration" tool.
