You're right, but granny still doesn't think broadband is worth the extra cost. She's willing to wait a few minutes to see the pictures of the grandkids

I hope she has tech-savvy kids, because I've seen people send 5-Meg photos directly copied from their camera. That's gotta hurt, if it doesn't bounce on the recipients inbox. For grannies here, DSL is still an advantage, simply because they'd pay per minute for dial-up. Downloading those pictures then comes down expensive too...

Is this a US phenomenon? My Internet seems to be pretty much as fast as always and I don't do filesharing. The reason Granny waits for her webpages is because she still uses dial-up and webpages have become increasingly dial-up unfriendly.

Fascist America, in 10 easy steps

My history teacher pointed those out in 1997 and he wasn't thinking of the USA back then. I thought: come on, it can't be that easy! However, seeing what happens in the USA, I humbly have to retract that opinion.

    1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy: 9/11 Terrorists, enemy combatants and unspoken Islam
    2. Create a gulag: Two words... Guantanamo Bay
    3. Develop a thug caste: Not yet, I think so at least.
    4. Set up an internal surveillance system: See article
    5. Harass citizens' groups: Again, see article and peaceful oriented groups have already been infiltrated. Okay, my source is Roger Moore so a grain of salt the size of Canada is needed.
    6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release: This goes along with Guantanamo. However, non-fly lists are in those lines....
    7. Target key individuals: Is most certainly happening....
    8. Control the press: Conglomerates do this... Don't even bother. Real historic dictatorships couldn't do this as well as capitalistic US.
    9. Dissent equals treason: If you're not with us, you're against us.... I have to say no more.
    10. Suspend the rule of law: Habeas corpus is gone, more laws have followed and more will follow.

They do? I've got FF2 at home and I'm running Limited User. It has never ever asked me to update to anything. Perhaps I just disabled the thing, because I want to be in control? I disable all automatic updates, it's my computer, I decide.

For kick 'n giggles I'll activate it on my wifes computer. As for now, I'm typing this on an Asus EEE PC 701 with the basic operating system. That one is still FF2.... version 2.0.0.11, which is oddly enough the firefox version also runing on my wifes XP machine.
