  1. for (some not all) musicians..... on How do you Remember Your Passwords? · · Score: 3

I just thought of this whilst reading all the posts..
for keyboardists, try the opening few measures of the theme of a composition, (hmm.Bach's Preludes would be a little too repetative though..) imagining the comp keyboard as a musical keyboard. Yeah Yeah I know, the keys are entirely wrong, BUT,If you know the piece, your fingers should remember at LEAST the theme, and hit the same area everytime..
I started testing this theory with not only keyboard themes, but also guitar licks... BTW, Chords don't work:), violin solos, bass lines.
Trombonists, flautists, and other brass and woodwinds would tend to have problems. Especially trombonists :) because of the registers requiring multiple fingerings....
I dunno, maybe I just need more coffee
and more testing.... please let me know what you think

Or in the Case of RAS equipment
do a NINDY by plugging the jumpers on the mobo
Upload a new TAOS/COMOS using a serial connection with 1K/XModem transfer
halfway through upload yank the jumpers

what % of people do you think ACTUALLY register WinZip or CuteFTP, etc.......
Yes you should try software before you buy. I whole heartedly agree... but as you and I both seem to do, if you are going to use it, show your appreciation and buy it.
But I also feel that individual piracy is not a major issue, I'm more worried about the international piracy. I've heard from some friends of mine in Belaruse that you can get software for around 20% of the going price in the U.S. Do you really think these are legitimate copies????
Do yourself a favour.. Go to the next computer show... take a CLOSE look at the CD you're buying
does it have an "educational" license. Does it say "not for release in the U.S.?" I've found this to be true not only for games, but for full blown OS/office suites/ etc....

OK I realize this is going over the edge, but thanks for the insight. I DO agree there are much better things for the government agencies to do than to go pound on warez channels...like try to remove there anterior regions from their posterior region :)

As you can probably guess by my above statement I'm still a gaming freak. I would rather do my research and buy a game I think I would really enjoy that has updates etc.. than to grab on the latest flash in the pan that hasn't matured yet... hmmm I guess the same comes to all the software I use OS's included

  6. Piracy in the Post Modern World on The BSA Going After IRC Warez Channels · · Score: 4

I remember considering myself quite the little pirate back in the late 70's early 80's copying out my TRS-DOS and Apple games... trading them over 100's of floppies...
Then I started learning how to program and realized the ramifications of what I was doing, I felt like crap after a couple of my programs that were picked up by BYTE magazine and the like for some contests had the source listed on the magazine.. yeah I had a little recognition (not bad for a 7th grader to get a letter from Broderbund :)) but I started to understand the harm I was doing to the programmers... I was cheating them out of recognition and $$$$
Now Fast Forward to our Free-as-in-beer vs. free-as-in-speech software movement.
Granted I like picking up free stuff, and testing it out.. But now if I REALLY like something I'll go buy it. Case in point, I picked up half-life after borrowing a friends CD for a week to test it out.
Nothing is really going to crack down on piracy and warez on a full force level IMHO except a shift in how the end-users perceive themselves. Do they want to respect others, or just believe that they are getting a one-uppance on everyone else.
Now that I'm done rambling.... what's next?? going back to the days of the little cryptic disks (aka Bard's Tale III and AD&D games) that you had to match up the words and symbols or look up the nth word on the nth sentance on the nth paragraph on the nth page??????

well it seems outraegeous, but it's true... I had mine done last year by a Dr. Peter Kansas and associates out of Albany NY... The cost was about 5K complete. My eyesight had stabilized for about 5 years, and I hadn't worn contacts for around 8 months, which made me a prime candidate.
The first day they did my left eye, (I opted for LASIK vs. RK) they cut the lens of the eye, insert a laser and burn the inside to the proper contour. The procedure took about 10 minutes, and was fairly simple on my part ("Just keep looking at the flashing red light") It was strange as I saw this bright circle of light with a pulsating red middle blur then get clearer and clearer... They reconnected the lens, bandaged the eye and shipped me off home... The next day the bandage came off and Voila 20/40 vision... A week later they did the right eye (partially to avoid cross infection between the two eyes) That one went about the same way... I didn't even have to take the Valium they prescribed to calm the patient down for either operation... The next day the bandage came off and I could see with 20/30 in the left 20/40 in the right... At my 6 week checkup the final verdict 20/20 in my left and 20/25 in the right.. When I told them that I did sys administration he chuckled that my borderline nearsitedness would actually help reduce eye strain usually found in 20/20 users... I wholeheartedly reccommend it.
I went from BIG OL cokebottle glasses years of contacts and not being able to watch TV while I fall asleep, swimming without worries. A whole bunch of things I now almost take for granted.

I could be waaay off base here, but after setting up a QII server for some colleagues of mine, I noticed that the ones who had a 28.8 connection seemed to be zipping around much better than my 53 connection....
I checked the radius files and found out that RD/TR was 26.4/28 for them and 31.2/53.3 for me..... now what I was wondering is that since the Ratio of the Transfer and Receive is greater on the faster connection, would that cause latency/lag in gameplay.... It would seem to make sense that as the ratio of I/O approches 1:1, that response time would be better.... So if that rings true, wouldn't a 33.6 modem or 28.8 modem be a better fix????? Then again I guess I could just run a RF antenna to the roof of the office and setup a receiver at home... or hell, just run CAT5 across the street :)

OK without missing the Shift Key this time:)
It's really nice to hear about this, although I don't really believe that Phish would willingly "sell" a concert on the Web, but then again, They don't "give" away a whole lot of tickets to their shows on a regular basis either.
Hell I remember seeing these guys in VT in the late 80's and having to pay a cover-charge at the local watering-hole, so I can kind of see what they are doing.
I'm also pretty sure that according to their recording policy they (NOT saying that their record company wont) be prosecuting any piracy or re-distribution of the show.
Mayhaps they are just trying to see how much of a "market" potential they have on whether or not to start webcasting some of their Live shows.
    # mount /dev/highhorse
As far as name-calling and phish-bashing goes, it's justplain silly... You shouldn't judge a group (music or otherwise) on the basis of their following. If that were the case I would have thought that the Dead were catering to the Rich Little Spoiled Trust Fund Babies who wanted to be hippies yet were tooling out to Vegas and Oakland in their Daddy's BMW.
Phish can appeal to a lot of people for a lot of reasons, being a musician I like their perversion of classical music theory and rhythms and their free-form "Hey that sounds cool, lets do it" mentality... Their love of their audience goes a long way with the adoption of the 'Dead's recording policy.
I have noticed however with the passing of Jerry Garcia that a lot of deadheads switched gears and started following Phish. a few reasons, Ideologically(sp?) they share a free-form music genre, they put on great shows, and there was allready a following that toured with them. So it was real easy to point the vehicle in another direction and follow a different band.

This seems like this whole mentality has creeped up on /. in the past couple weeks where people want to start fingerpointing and holy wars.... Remember folks, WE are nerds/geeks/etc... just because some of us were ridiculed doesn't mean we have to reciprocate.. Well, primarily our problem in high school and role-playing was when we formed a Role-playing group and asked for time in the library after hours to play games.. The school administration was fine with this after we put together a proposal stating the educational values of roleplaying. (i.e. a good springboard for developing reading skills, logical thought, mathematics, an interest in mythology, etc..)
BUT then the local holy rollers (not to be confused with the clerics/paladins in my group) started off on the whole satanic side of Role-Playing. Lots of letters to the editors of the local paper ensued, and we humbly responded to them basically defending our point. Would you rather have us venting our adolescent hormonal imbalances and angst in the Real World, or channeling them through our imaginations???
As a few people who posted after this stated, I too am dreading the ramifications by the imaginationally challenged, who are frightened by the powers of their own mind. But As we fought and won our battle over playing games, mayhaps others should do the same... Invite the disbelievers to sit in on the games. The group I DM'd usually spent more time figuring out puzzles and cryptic riddles than hacking and slashing. And they enjoyed it more...

But then again, we ARE still living in the shadow of Geek-Bashing and Video-Games leading to the violence in teenage society.

This brings back SUCH a nostalgic twinge... I remember raising $1830 to buy a TRS-80 Mod III with DUAL *wow:)* drives and a whopping 48K RAM.. It was such a powerhouse back then.. I guess the point I'm coming to is this. I remember being a 10 year old sitting in front of that "blue screen" (I had the el cheapo mesh screen over the CRT) for almost Days on end... first playing games as the old Scott Adams Adventures... Then Zork, the wonderful old games of Labyrinth, Bedlam... These games drove me to try to create some of my own (I STILL have my 1st edition D&D Greyhawk and Blackmoor books) Well... The different DOS's had their own uses.. I hated NewDOS, but TRS-DOS was OK for minor programming in basic. After a year or two I worked my way up to working in Debug and hacking around in assembler.. Then one day it happened.. My mother's Master Thesis(Written in Scripsit) CRASHED hard, but I was able to recover it by sitting a typewriter in front of the MODIII and reading most of the text from debug and interpolating the rest from the hex codes.
I never thought then that I would be able to use those skills today (i.e. working algorithims in COMOS and perl etc...), but now I actually wish I had the time I had back then to really devote to learning what made that machine tick, and use that to learn what my servers today can do. I know I'm not the only one out there that feels that way, and for those of you who scoff at us "old farts" waxing nostalgic, trust me.... You can have your imaginations handed to you via GUI and imagery, some of us had to use our own visual imagery INSIDE, and between you and me, I kinda like mine more :) As I always say, if you want to learn, you MUST read.
