  1. here we go again on Cobalt Networks files for IPO · · Score: 1

I was very fortunate to meet the cofounder and VP of Cobalt at last springs ISPCon in Baltimore. I must say I was very impressed with the CacheRAQ2 (consequently, we bought a couple for trying out in one of our POPs). I was not only impressed with the equipment, but actually to have the "suits" that were there to sell the products seemed to treat my other netadmin and I (who were dressed... shall we say in attire more becoming sys admins.. i.e. shorts, hawaiian shirts, etc...) with respect and actually KNEW the technical issues that we were addressing, and truly seemed to care about our concerns (r.e. uptime, remote administration, security, ssh, caching stats, caching of java applets, etc). Not that this has anything to do with their IPO announcement, but I feel that this will be another company that I would like to support.
I am also concerned as was mentioned in previous posts if they are going to release their (per)version of RH in the manner becoming of the Open Source community, or if they plan on keeping it under lock and key and proprietarily (sp?)
IMHO in just the few minutes that I talked to the people from Cobalt, I feel that they are probably waiting for their source to be bulletproofed before releasing it to the masses. If this is the case, then I applaud them and will back them wholeheartedly. BUT if they decided to keep it under lock and key to try to keep their product to themselves, I will probably NOT opt to buy their stock, but I WILL keep investing in their products.
These boxes are FAST, reliable, and with a very small footprint... I'd like to turn one over to a (play) server just to see what it would take to crash it:)

Aside from the initial NeoMagic Chipset problems with RH 5.1 where I had to tweak out the XF86Config file, we really haven't had much problems getting these little badboys working and staying running. He's got somewhere around 79+ day uptime. ( and that's only because of rebooting for quotas).. My laptop I've been using as a workstation for remote access to my servers, checking connectivity problems at remote locations with a variety of modems ( my Fave being the Megahertz 56K from 3Com which works even with the quirky 3.9b12 from Livingston*cough*/lucent)

With a little bit of tweaking, these Text based formats were pretty easily transferable, If you could get the DOS's to agree... NewDOS ProDOS TrsDOS MS-DOS et al.
Then came the "AGE OF INDIVIDUALITY" Apples/Macs couldn't talk to "PC's" easily,(Or should I flip that around the PC's couldn't read the Mac Discs easily?) WordPerfect and MSWord were battling on that front, Claris was having a field day with MacLinkPlus allowing Cross-platform processing,
meanwhile all the people still using vi,pico, and emacs were going "WTF is the fuss about"..
I used to use *embarrased* Netscape Composer for my word processing, this was for 2 reasons, I could always backup my docs on a server, I did everything I wanted, and there was no annoying assistant.
Now I'm back to the promised land of using vi(m) for just about everything, unless I'm stuck on a Windows or mac, then I'll usually use Notepad or Simpletext (but I keep getting :wq at the bottom of all my pages :))

Well rather than get lost in the strings above I decided to post here.
YES! Guinness most definately tastes better abroad (take that whichever way you like) Being an avid beer drinker/Irishman I could definately notice the difference quaffing a pint in Galway Ireland vs Galway NY,USA. In order for export, there does have to be an addition of preservatives, primarily since the shipping is usually sea-borne. (much like the Nouveau Beajolais in Nov. when the vineyards ship quantities via air and by boat. Air is just much more expensive)
As far as the alcoholic % of beer in the US. They usually peter out around 4-4.5 % for commercial brands. I try to keep my homebrew around 5-6% to match my canadian favourites (Molson Canadian and Labatts 50) But I have tipped the scales once with a 10% batch of porter *mmmmmm*
When I was going to school in UT, there was a law that you could only buy 3.2% beer from convenience /grocery stores, everything else had to be bought in either state run liquor stores, or on the Class 6 stores on Military bases (Thanks for the dependant ID Dad! saved me a LOT of money on beer :) )
The highest alcohol content for a commercial "beer" Ive found is around 11% that is found in the Samual adams triple bock (not too sure about that one) but definately in EKU from europe.
I believe that the % for Guinness in the states runs the gambit between 5-6% to keep in accordance with certain import and truth in advertising laws that are rampant in this country. Hence why you an also get the better Molson's and Labatts by heading "North" of the border.
Just a quick heads up on the beer observations.
Have fun at the party guys I wish I could be there.

Definately not for the Serious user, but could be a nifty toy, especially if your going to buy a DSS/Dish system anyway.
