    Poor teachers that's a lost war if I've ever heard one. It's a decent thought. "Try to get the kids not to fight each other." But does it work? Nope. I've always thought that they should teach all the kids karate so that they could all defend themselves, and it would be some thing useful learned in PE instead of ring around the rosy or red rover. Actually, they play some games picking up plastic cups in PE now a days.

    a teacher in a Title 1 (read: seriously economically disadvantaged school) we spend a lot of time seeing parents that don't do ANY job of parenting at all. We run multiple after-school programs just to keep kids off the streets who don't have a parent at home to watch over them. We expect teachers to teach students morals and values (or do we? I've lost track of public opinion on that subject at the moment), teach responsibility, and inspire public virtue in our students... but the moment the final bell rings, the teacher is expected to ignore everything that goes on.

    See that's your problem. You and other teachers want or think that the parents want you to parent the kids at or before or after school. You may be right about your students and their parents. My wife and I would complain to the school board members if we observed our public schools teachers doing anything of the kind. I only want my teacher to teach the state required guidelines for what my child's age group should learn. I don't want you or the state to tack on your morals or values on my children or any other child other than your own.

    The only two morals that I really think public shool does a good job at are 1. show up every day. 2. Turn in your work every day or what ever you have done.

    Schools are messed up places in some parts. If you didn't always toe the line, and didn't get suspended, consider your school a progressive one.

    Or like I've always said, public schools preparing the public to live life in a police state to be happy with whatever repulican voting they get and to believe that they live in a democracy.

    I don't want to be paying rentals to cable or broadcast companies. I like a program, I don't want just 1-4 shows, I want the entire damn season. I don't want the whole season 2 years from now either, I want it shortly after it airs for $30-$50. The only shows that I own everything to are Robotech and B5. I don't want Friends or Fraiser. I wouldn't mind "The Outer Limits" or "Politergist the Legacy" . There were a few other shows that only showed at 11:00 pm or 1 am around here. I'd like to be able to buy all of them on DVD. I don't care about what is on prime time TV. Why? Because if it is any good, it'll be showing again and again on other stations. The bad part is that TV stations kill good shows before the have a chance to build up an audience. Some shows that may have been good to see on DVD don't have the episodes. I wonder when someone is going to try a direct to DVD TV series.

    This is because the Bush administration is setting NASA up to fail. I won't be surprised if in 15 years time, NASA simply won't exist anymore.

    I can't believe that Bush's staff is so brillant. Of course it's taken the Republicans a good 35 years to attempt to kill NASA, but its about time. I don't mind alot of the science that NASA funds, but I think other organizations would be better for picking where to spend our billions on blue sky science projects. Wouldn't the National Science Foundation make more sense to fund all those projects? I think we need to map the orbits of all objects in the solar system able to destory the species. That shouldn't cost more than $200 million and would be long term useful for the defense of the planet. I think the FCC should sponsor a communication network connecting every planet and important moon or other rocks in space. Heck, its long past time that we have miners, factories, and massive solar reflectors/collectors in space. None of those should be sponsored by NASA as it exists.

    Who gives a rat about NASA science projects when all we really need is booze and floating space strippers? I bet Space Vegas would finally make us an intergalactic empire!


    It makes more sense to construct a lighter than air station over international waters. It would be just as impressive. Maybe even more so because you could possibly see it from nearby islands. It could be built in Vegas and flown anywhere in the world that you want your high dollar casino.

    If you get off your ass, spend billions of dollars of your own money and go land on the Moon you should have some legal right to fence off a bit of land and claim it as your own. Once you've lived on the property for some set period of time you should be free to do a geological survey and apply for mining rights. If it wasn't for homesteading laws like this the west of the United States wouldn't have been settled (and all them native americans wouldn't have been killed, but that's hardly relevant to this discussion).

    No the issue is that if you have the ability to go to the moon and setup weapons to keep other people from landing on the moon or leaving Earth, you by default "own" the entire solar system, unless there is another entity already in residence or another space faring species comes along with better weapons to claim the solar system for their species. That's always been the golden law of land rights.

    Not to argue that the mythbusters are always right, but they've disproved this in one of thier episodes. They did some pretty good convincing after building a trireme and using a few hundred mirrors and only reaching a couple of hundred degrees (F).

    I hate to say it, but this only proves that mythbusters doesn't have the skill able to burn boats with mirrors. It doesn't prove that any one else couldn't.

    As far as the media goes, it's only "won't someone think of the children!" when the kids are at risk of being affected by outside forces. If it is the kids themselves offending, it's "try 'em as adults, and throw away the key."

    Let's see these things have all been blasted as evil and corrupting the youth: poetry, books, any forms of music, dance, movies, comics, television, internet surfing, and video games. Let's really strike a blow at the RIAA and the MPAA, and all the broadcasters that want to limit digital tv recording.
    Lets make it a federal criminal crime to have a copyright on any form of art. Let's just screw all the artists. Actually, my first thought, was lets make any forms of music, dance, movies, and television illegal to produce or license in any form in the US. (It should be fine to own those goods though.)

    I just had one of those suckers go through the washing machine a while back. Still works.

    I've lost count how many times my little 128 MB Dell has made the trip through the washing machine. It works fine. My 512 MB Lexar drive had to be replaced when I was troubleshooting someone else's computer and it stopped working. Lexar replaced it without any problems. Now, if we had that scale of a problem. Take my advice. Don't worry, don't keep anything on you except your driver's license. You'll be taken care by the red cross and the feds will have declared marshal law and everyone in the nation will be issued biometric ID cards anyway. If your rich, you should have a vacation home in an out of the way local that isn't on anyone's hit list. If you aren't rich, the best thing to do is try not to live in any major high profile cities or political points. I'd think Mt. RushMore http://www.nps.gov/moru/ and The Statue of Liberty http://www.nps.gov/stli/ would be better targets than anything else though.

    Goal isn't to kill people. It is to creat mass choas, panic and terror. I'd target New York City's Water Supply System http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/watersup.html rather than the city itself. The panic and terror that would create would be much more than if NYC was wiped off the face of the map.

    Actually, I hate it when anyone refer's to US as America or Americans or this American government. You are right, he should be mentioning the state government, which is different from the US Federal Government. We don't have an American government. That would imply a government that is governing all of North and South America. We most likely should have an American government though.

    It's much easier to target video games as an evil when no parent understands what it is all about. And when as a politician you have the opportunity to spin your wheels over something and make it look like you are saving the children, you take it or someone else will.

    Uh, I'd say you were on target if this was the 80's or the mid 90's. Now, I'd say most adults/young parents have most likely played video games and will use their sense in letting their kids play.

    I have my N64 still hooked up mainly because the kids like Zelda and Wave Race. (I'm not rich enough to buy the new consoles yet.) I've let my kids play Turok 2. I do use sense though. I turn off the blood and turn of the cerbal bore. Otherwise it's a fairly clean game. (Atleast my kids aren't learning to just walk into other people's homes and bash their pots for their rupees.) I'm not into FPS games. My kids it turns out aren't either. We do like to play the N64 Gauntlet. It's just hold down your weapon and bash the enemies. It is a bit scarier than most of games that I let my kids play, but that's the one that they beg to play. Mainly cause all three of us can play it. Zelda they fight over who gets to play.

    I'd tend to think that if you are 30-40 go ahead and job hop. It'll be your last move. If you are 38+ with a wife and kids just out of college or entering college, I'd stick with your current job with more money.

    If you are 20-30, unmarried without kids, go ahead and switch jobs. You are free at the moment anyway. If you are 18-23 and some how got into the top job, I'd stay there if I were you. But that's me. It's your life; it's your decision; we slashdot posters have our own lifes to play out. Go ahead and just live yours.

    Anywho, the place is a giant clusterfuck in no small part to Europe's meddling. It didn't just stop after WWII, it was still a giant clusterfuck, with an even larger power struggle, now that Europe was weakened and couldn't project power into Africa like they had done prior to WWI. What we are seeing today is the result of Europe losing the ability to rule Africa after WWII.

    Damn, it almost sounds like they would have been better off with the USSR running the place. Atleast USSR would have treated all the people the same, ...

    The more that I think about it the better off it sounds like Africa would be if some one conquered the entire continent and then left it as a unified political entity after 10-20 years of getting Africa ordered where they don't kill each other. Heck remembering the middle east, it may take 1000-2000 years before we see any changes.

    This exploitation of tribal groups and resources around the world allowed western Europe to become the most wealthy and powerful nations in the world. Once they started relinquishing their rule in the 20th century, they left a power vacuum where there are now countless wars, famines, and tragedies. In short, the west created this situation, through both action and inaction. I believe organizations should be held responsible for their actions, and they certainly have the werewithal to make up for their mistakes now.

    I thought most of it stopped after WWI or WWII where the Africans were seeing that the Europians weren't any better than they were.

    I guess it's a question of whether they would really starve, or whether the sale simply achieves convenience for the parents at the expense of a brighter future for the kid.

    I don't know about you, but everything my school ever checked out to individual students was recorded with recipts. If it was a book or TI-81 that we broke, lost, or sold, we'd be responsible to pay replacement costs to the school. I find it hard to believe that a country that just spent $100 million for 1 million laptops would not record what students recieve which laptops. For where black market comes in, is when 20K-100K of those laptops disappears before ever reaching the schools or students. That's not something that an individual student could solve.

    Uh, you may want to take pictures of 'em but I'd like to shoot 'em. Pokemon was o.k. to begin with, but then it just got annoying. Heck, there are times that I'd like to shoot any number of my favorite video game characters. We could shoot at Mario, Samus, Link, Zelda, and all those minor background characters. ;)

    Of course I'm an adult and I'd like to take out my aggression on defensless video game characters. (I definitely wouldn't want to think about trying to unlock and whack to death one of FFs super tough bosses. Could you imagine having to to hit the monster area where you have to actually swing your sword as many times as you attack? Damn, FF would be a heavily fitness oriented game if that were so.)

    3. Don't let your local community decide what should be taught in schools.
    6. Ban the teaching of religion on any and all school grounds.

    This is insightful? I thought it was funny. You'd never get the taxes passed to push teachers into that income bracket. People fight hardest for the smallest of rights. We had a civil war over "states rights." Although I'd have loved never to heard any religion in high school or college, you'd never ever get it passed or enforced. You'd just have world religion with a focus on christainty being taught.

    Actually, it was never the teacher's that were the problem; it was the students trying to convert other students that were the big problem. (Except for the teacher that was also leader of the fellowship of christian students. That teacher would always remind class about the next meeting and invite non member students to be part of their club.)
