Management has always been one of my rant-points, but there are many adequate recent significant examples... "The 911 Report" provides the most recent list as proof. My comments express my concern with the current situation they are not flamebait.
Should my extended comment be ignored as "verbal diarrhea", '911 recommendations implementation will mean nothing if management is not fixed and no one goes to jail for life, because there is an excuse for political, financial, religious treason, manslaughter, gross-negligence,.... I hope they fix management and get rid of the 66% pet-rocks, because they will kill US and destroy the nation slowly from within US like a cancer.'
There is a preponderance (recent and historical) of evidence supporting the comment. Do we go into history like the Great Roman Empire, ignoring indolence, incompetence, corruption, malfeasance, and insanity (in our business, religious, government leaders) until the end? It will not be my end (I like most of the 66% will be passed away (dead), it will end for our descendents and posterity.
If you are in your '20s', don't prompt an answer from you parents or grand parents,..., but ask them for their comments/observation to these questions.
If you could pick your own work-team out of the people you work with,
how many of them would you want on your tem?
At work, how many employees are really needed to get the job done?
My experience over many years, jobs, places and faces the replies in the conversations have ranged from two to three in ten (never more). None of the folks that I talked with ever wanted "The Clock Puncher (and/or career manager)" or the "Problem Child (and/or pet-rock)" that made messes and was always needing training. Most said they can work with folks that have personality quirks/foibles. The totally delusional will identify themselves only or only other managers/bosses (never the pack-mules and worker-bees).
Many people in management are pet-rocks (two out of three are inbreed worthless). Around here we call'em View-Graph Engineers (Good Briefers) a/o Career Managers (Promotion Focused). I have also heard them call me and my colleagues worker-bees and pack-mules to important to getting the job done to be promoted into management. > In the past (2003.07.19 2:29 and many other times) I have said management in the USA from CEO (Government, Business, Religion) to first-line pet rocks are failures/worthless/harmfull 66% of the time. Alabama/Ohio/NY, Enron/FBI/CIA, last/present/next group of politicians (I suspect) will be about 33% effective. > 911 recommendations implimentation will mean nothing if management is not fixed and no one goes to jail for life, because there is an excuse for political or financial treason. I hope they fix management and get rid of the 66% pet-rocks, because they will kill US and destroy the nation slowly from within US like a cancer. > Management blames others (citizens/employees) for failures. We always find out later that the Government/Business/Religious militray/civilian worker-bees and pack-mules did all the right things, but management and pet-rock/office/plutocratic politics did all the wrong things.... The (civilian worker-bees and pack-mules) make no decisions and can only seek permission, but those at cause of the failure point the finger at the group that many like to use as an excuse the poor and/or honest. Incompetent decisions that sometimes are made by unaccredited university degreed (diploma mill) managers, Bosses, and politicians are the typical today.
Failures in business and government projects are due to piss poor performance by management and Bosses not the worker-bees and pack-mules employees. Ecology, business, and tax laws, pension and health benefits,... don't cause bank/CU failures, business bankruptcies, criminal fraud and theft in business the majority of failures in our economy/business are due to piss poor performance by management and Bosses not the worker-bees and pack-mules employees.
2001/09/11 NSA, CIA, and FBI failures were not because of the field agents, workers, and soldiers. Two Shuttle disasters, Hubble Telescope, X-43A,... failures are due to failures in leadership and delusional denial by management. Credit Unions (CU), Global Crossings, World Com, Enron,... failures, and Delta and other companies CEOs and staff steeling (lack of a better word) from worker-bees and pack-mules pension funds, reductions in pay, benefits, and health insurance to fund the CEOs' and staffs' ever increasing pay and benefits increases, and then put CEOs' and staffs' retirements in protected trust.
Politicians of the Capitalist Republic applaud CEOs' and staffs' performance in saving the economy by getting the worker-bees and pack-mules (US Citizens) to pay for the bad global economy. The President after 2001/09/11 called for all good US Citizens to spend our money and support the USA. The CEOs', staffs', and politicians (have a different agenda) are setting up more corporate and wealthy tax welfare programs for the oil and construction companies in Iraq and national parks, pharmaceutical companies in Africa,....
US Citizens will pay in the future (our children, grandchildren,...), financial responsibility is a thing of the past, and social security is always secure, because the government can maintain benefits for the wealthy today, and increase the social security retirement age until the right number of US Citizens die and never collect any benefits (old folks don't have many dependents). US, EU, and UN Citizens are becoming the whores of the wealthy fucked now, beaten later, and screwed to death. > OldHawk777, Yep, I know I have said it all before. The road to hell is paved with the best of intentions,
and cynical indecisive incompetent decisions by people and
leaders.
Laws (most not all) are mediocre at best for preventing criminal
activity.
Laws are developed in a reactionary environment after criminal
activity.
Laws are approved by legislators that frequently lack
knowledge/experience.
Laws are applied, when (by evidence/clues) possible after criminal
incidents.
Preventing criminal activities requires walls, locks, security
(sensors, guards,...),... and other real-physical-things that
require a personal, financial, community, and national commitment.
Fluff-Laws (most not all on science and technology [data, bio,
nano,...]) provide politicians and people with concepts/plans of
Security by Obscurity paralysis by analysis,
point the finger, smear the blame plausibly
deniable, false accusations, adoration
charade, veneer honor, protracted
capriciousness, economic/cultural instability, and
they never prevent/stop criminal/terrorist activity.
Science, weapons, and technology are potential problems/dangers
(as is life). Control of science, weapons, and technology by law to
prevent a terrorist act is (I believe) a straw-dog waste of life,
time, money.... We need to let-loose our guard-dogs and work-horses
of science and technology to protect US and build a strong
learning-environment and economic system for the future. We need to
lockup and secure our weapons technology by stronger physical
measures. No potential enemy should know how we spy, what we can do,
how stealthy are our weapons, or anything about our technology. When
people/companies (by intent/incompetence) sell/provide any weapons
(Small or Mass) education, knowledge, references,... then we must
destroy the company (make the companies and investors responsible for
security) and imprison the persons involved for life.
Public/Commercial technology may be used as part of weapons, but
public/commercial technology OEM/OSD products are not weapons. We are
not the only nuclear power, technology developer, science research,
computer and gadget manufacturer in this world. I suspect, few
nations (China, Russia, France, India, Thailand, Germany, Iran,...)
will consider USA laws as binding in international commerce/business.
So, guess what happens when you outlaw OEM/OSD products that are
available in other countries (USA economic destruction, global
commerce leaving the USA, declining international investments,...).
How damn stupid on technology can a collection of legislators be?
Well folks if they are in the USA Congress this should leave no
doubt. The USA-AG Ashcroft is probably supporting this inane law, and
the USA President Bush can be expected to sign on the dotted line
with the X to mark the spot.
BRING BACK MAD, for forty years we lived in fear of
technology (Nukes), but stupid laws against technology were for the
most part avoided. I guess this proves that either fear helped us do
the right thing or the USA legislators of the time were more
intelligent, better read, and competent about managing a Nations
Resources and Interest. We need to just let everyone in the world
know including the delusional religious (even those in the USA) that
if we go all will go to hell and damnation for more than fifty years
now humanity has had the ability for self-extinction the corruption
of the natural environment may bring about extinction, maybe a
bio/nano plague will cause total humanity annihilation,... if we
avoid the unknown (science, technology, the Universe) then we may as
well be extinct.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT POINT involves the feeble and foolish attempts
by special interest and legislators who conspire to pass laws
(against the public interest, supported by PAC-money and vapor-facts)
to control Open-Source, Open-Standards, Free
Software Foundation,....
This is redundant. I have been saying it for many years.
Federal, State, and Local law makers, special interest, delusional moralist/clergy, and now judges determine how to control the evils of technology. IP number for the judge was maybe an 'Intellectual Property' number and DNS a Darn Nuisance Something; Therefor, if a phone-number is portable and personal property then an IP address must be personal property.
I have not noticed, over the past twenty years, any better logic used by others in US legislatures. I am sure that some have been good laws, and I have just been looking for and reading about the stupid laws that breed failure for the USA remaining the leader in the Sciences and Technology.
USA management fails US again... on the job, in the home, in government, internationally.... Out of the capitalist nations we are last in education, 11th in telecommunications, maybe 15th in science and technology,.... There is a crises in the USA and it started before Carter, and just continued through Reagan, Clinton, Bush,.... I hope we start fixing our problems soon and leave the global messes for EU, Russia, India, China....

development.
Ask what are FSF, RMS, GNU, and of course what does 10 equal.
Ask how does a distributed collaborative consensus community work
on technology projects.

____ These may be overly simple for the/. community; However, an
engineering/project manager may have little or no programming
experience, but still have current knowledge and experience on
bringing to gather diverse resources and promoting a performance

Bosses that maintain a pet-rock garden for image and support.

will I suspect know only how to be a stove-pipe dictator with little
valuable people and projects management skills.

____ Certification like Degrees provide the basics, but both are all to frequently obtained by regurgitation rather than competence/performance/skills/intelligence. This is frequently reflected in business with managers knowing more how to manage their careers (all the way to CEO) much better than managing a project, mission, and/or people to obtain profitable/reproducible results.
____ Performance of companies appear frequently based on market dynamics far more than management/leadership skills. Failures and fads from GM, IBM,... missing leading indicators that small, economic, personal products may be the way to go for the future to the DotCom Boom-Bust, to the telco, data, bio, nano,... technology laws that are purchased by special-interest to protect market-share or defend mythical moral-truths. All wasting (almost treasonable) our nations' money, resources, time, and future vainly trying to stop reality and change. I hope that soon more of our national leaders will recognize and understand that education, domestic policy, national interest, and a solid focused Defense will provide peace and prosperity for our children's future long before the following of the false-gods of capitalist greed and religious myth.
____ Capitalism is good as an economic model (I like it, as best possible), but as a Governing principle it will prove to rank with Communism as a failure. I hope we return to the democratic aspirations (all are equal) of the founding father ASAP. Citizens have the right to vote, but special-interest buy the votes with the best sound-bites, best dressed,... political dazzler pageants that have ever existed. We need to disenfranchise all special-interest from corrupting our democracy and destroying our future. I recommend that all US citizens vote against all corporate, political, and religious incumbents until there are laws that exist which result in prison and/or loss of citizenship when special-interest attempt to influence and when politicians act for special-interest.
____ Oh, PLEASE, do not play the Rush pundit dogma-rhetoric game of how do you define special-interest. If you need that logic to validate your reality..., then you are far to delusional to understand reality.

JT3 Said, back in 2002; (and I agree, been doing it with Linux and MS, because of LILO and dual boot problems going back for me to 1995, I am just a user not a hacker, admin,...)
"I mean, why in the world would you want a removable hard drive? Well, that's a pretty good question. Think about this for a moment. What if you want two operating systems? Sure, you can dual-boot off of one drive, but that's just another level of complexity that can cause problems, especially if they're totally unrelated operating systems such as Linux and WinXP. Or, what if you have two uses for a single system? Maybe your kids (or younger siblings, for our younger readers) want a tricked out gaming box, but you don't want those inherently unstable games thrashing the hard drive that contains your critical financial data (or maybe you just don't want those same kids/siblings having access to that sensitive data). Or, here's a good reason you may not have thought of... what if you want to backup your system? Huh? Wha? I know what you're thinking... that's what tape drives are for... but just how long do you think it takes to backup 40-60GB or so of data to tape? What's more, how long to restore it? Or even better, how long does it take to find and restore one file from such a backup? Even assuming you don't have to swap tapes six or seven times, it can still take forever. If, however, you backed it up to a removable hard drive, it would literally take seconds."
Matched drives (size, part, speed, brand/model,...) are best [not required]... why confuse BIOS when it never looks at OS anyway [IDE, EIDE, SCSI,... available]. One cheap PC can be many things for learning, doing, spoofing,.... When I had money for one good all-around computer this was the way to go. Now with the prices and performance you can have more than one computer; So, why not dual removable HDD racks on all your computers, mirror the drives, possible problems with MS-WXP, but.... Today, I just run a couple old computers (favorite old one with Linux, the other has WinXP for my Q&A and others' FAQ. Mix and match OS and computers on WiFi SOHO for Technology Experience and Knowledge (TEK) and be an non-degreed "Technology Information Advisor" (TIA) with out being a real poindexter. Extra, sometimes (I think) MS-Win makes a user or other software look like the problem, because MS-Win* never wants competitive problems. Like the 'you have shut down improperly' when it was because MS-Win* locked-up or blue-screened and forced the "AC-Power reboot"

Maybe that is it, they are trying to bankrupt the FSF foundation by having everyone working at the FSF for nothing and costing time and money... over months and years. That guy at SCO he ain't smart enough for such tactical/strategic thought... I wonder who the real software boss is?
I will continue to make ($20-$200) donations to FSF and others, but I will continue to keep it all hand2hand without receipts or tax benefits. Good SOS BS examples, and all have proven examples of ROI value.
However, the examples only show ways that businesses can exploit OS "software products" for ROI. Businesses using these SOS BS will outlast/outperform other business making the proprietary "stovepipe" (one choice, no options) mistake.
The big businesses of the future will discover ways to use/exploit the real international value of Open Source which are the methods, values, processes,... of the Collaborative Open Community (COC) that promotes frugality, quality, performance, and success of projects and mission.
The loyalty, commitment, skills retention, work satisfaction, change adaptation...,.I have observed over the past decade in the Open "consensus building" Community is a powerful force. Business organizations (in the future) that incorporate such OS nimbleness and finesse will control the global markets. IBM, SUN,... others may change internally over the next decade, because "stovepipe" management structures are frequently populated totalitarian groupthink managers and marketing deaks (QWERTY-typo desks). [many-heads-are-better-than-one; So, how do you get them to work and succeed together internationally. COC did it].
Maybe COC NP-foundation management jobs in your 20's/30's/40's/50's will be a significant qualifier for future CEOs, CTOs,.... Anyway, I think it will prove to be a deciding factor for major technology companies that want to get/stay competative and retain their best folks.

I have for years hoped for the same, in the USA, but education for the general public continues to become more expensive, more inferior, religiously/falwell slanted, and children and teachers continue to be blamed by our politicians, plutocrats, and extremely overpaid school/education administrators. Maybe one day school/education administrators and Corporate CEOs' pay will depend on real performance and success, but today lies, incompetence, and theft are more rewarding in the US business, religion, and government. Many people in management are pet-rocks (two out of three are inbreed worthless). Around here we call'em View-Graph Engineers (Good Briefers) a/o Career Managers (Promotion Focused). I have also heard them call me and my colleagues worker-bees and pack-mules to important to getting the job done to be promoted into management. .... The (civilian worker-bees and pack-mules) make no decisions and can only seek permission, but those at cause of the failure point the finger at the group that many like to use as an excuse the poor and/or honest. Incompetent decisions that sometimes are made by unaccredited university degreed (diploma mill) managers, Bosses, and politicians are the typical today. ... don't cause bank/CU failures, business bankruptcies, criminal fraud and theft in business the majority of failures in our economy/business are due to piss poor performance by management and Bosses not the worker-bees and pack-mules employees. ... failures are due to failures in leadership and delusional denial by management. Credit Unions (CU), Global Crossings, World Com, Enron, ... failures, and Delta and other companies CEOs and staff steeling (lack of a better word) from worker-bees and pack-mules pension funds, reductions in pay, benefits, and health insurance to fund the CEOs' and staffs' ever increasing pay and benefits increases, and then put CEOs' and staffs' retirements in protected trust. .... ...), financial responsibility is a thing of the past, and social security is always secure, because the government can maintain benefits for the wealthy today, and increase the social security retirement age until the right number of US Citizens die and never collect any benefits (old folks don't have many dependents). US, EU, and UN Citizens are becoming the whores of the wealthy fucked now, beaten later, and screwed to death.

>
>
We always find out later that the Government/Business/Religious militray/civilian worker-bees and pack-mules did all the right things, but management and pet-rock/office/plutocratic politics did all the wrong things
Failures in business and government projects are due to piss poor performance by management and Bosses not the worker-bees and pack-mules employees. Ecology, business, and tax laws, pension and health benefits,

"Reality is a self-induced hallucination."
The road to hell is paved with the best of intentions, and cynical indecisive incompetent decisions by people and leaders.
Laws (most not all) are mediocre at best for preventing criminal activity.
Laws are developed in a reactionary environment after criminal activity.
Laws are approved by legislators that frequently lack knowledge/experience.
Laws are applied, when (by evidence/clues) possible after criminal incidents.
Preventing criminal activities requires walls, locks, security (sensors, guards, ...), ... and other real-physical-things that
require a personal, financial, community, and national commitment.
Fluff-Laws (most not all on science and technology [data, bio, nano, ...]) provide politicians and people with concepts/plans of
Security by Obscurity paralysis by analysis,
point the finger, smear the blame plausibly
deniable, false accusations, adoration
charade, veneer honor, protracted
capriciousness, economic/cultural instability, and
they never prevent/stop criminal/terrorist activity.
Science, weapons, and technology are potential problems/dangers (as is life). Control of science, weapons, and technology by law to prevent a terrorist act is (I believe) a straw-dog waste of life, time, money ....
(Small or Mass) education, knowledge, references, ... then we must
destroy the company (make the companies and investors responsible for
security) and imprison the persons involved for life.
Public/Commercial technology may be used as part of weapons, but public/commercial technology OEM/OSD products are not weapons. We are not the only nuclear power, technology developer, science research, computer and gadget manufacturer in this world. I suspect, few nations (China, Russia, France, India, Thailand, Germany, Iran, ...)
will consider USA laws as binding in international commerce/business.
So, guess what happens when you outlaw OEM/OSD products that are
available in other countries (USA economic destruction, global
commerce leaving the USA, declining international investments, ...).
How damn stupid on technology can a collection of legislators be? Well folks if they are in the USA Congress this should leave no doubt. The USA-AG Ashcroft is probably supporting this inane law, and the USA President Bush can be expected to sign on the dotted line with the X to mark the spot.
BRING BACK MAD, for forty years we lived in fear of technology (Nukes), but stupid laws against technology were for the most part avoided. I guess this proves that either fear helped us do the right thing or the USA legislators of the time were more intelligent, better read, and competent about managing a Nations Resources and Interest. We need to just let everyone in the world know including the delusional religious (even those in the USA) that if we go all will go to hell and damnation for more than fifty years now humanity has had the ability for self-extinction the corruption of the natural environment may bring about extinction, maybe a bio/nano plague will cause total humanity annihilation, ... if we
avoid the unknown (science, technology, the Universe) then we may as
well be extinct.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT POINT involves the feeble and foolish attempts by special interest and legislators who conspire to pass laws (against the public interest, supported by PAC-money and vapor-facts) to control Open-Source, Open-Standards, Free Software Foundation, ....
Allowing spe
USA management fails US again

Ask if they know of any non-profit foundations for software development.
Ask what are FSF, RMS, GNU, and of course what does 10 equal.
Ask how does a distributed collaborative consensus community work on technology projects.
Ask what is the largest (market share) web-server software globally.
____ These may be overly simple for the /. community; However, an
engineering/project manager may have little or no programming
experience, but still have current knowledge and experience on
bringing to gather diverse resources and promoting a performance
environment. If the person will be an OSD team-leader, then I would expect them to have considerable experience and knowledge in at least two programming languages and at least positive results from one original software development (OSD) project in their resume.
____ There is nothing worse than bosses that live by supporting career management by suck-up-move-up, fuck-up-for-big-bucks, give-head-to-get-ahead, finger-points-of-trust, powerpoint-engineering, me-look-good-is-good, steal-the-fame-&-smear-the-blame, ... anyway you get the point.
Bosses that maintain a pet-rock garden for image and support.
____ If they know nothing about the features and functions GPL, open standards, open source software, open content, and the people and international foundations that manage these project then they will I suspect know only how to be a stove-pipe dictator with little valuable people and projects management skills.
Reality is a self-induced hallucination. -- OldHawk777
____ Certification like Degrees provide the basics, but both are
all to frequently obtained by regurgitation rather than
competence/performance/skills/intelligence. This is frequently
reflected in business with managers knowing more how to manage their
careers (all the way to CEO) much better than managing a project,
mission, and/or people to obtain profitable/reproducible results.
____ Performance of companies appear frequently based on market ... missing leading indicators that small, ... technology
dynamics far more than management/leadership skills. Failures and
fads from GM, IBM,
economic, personal products may be the way to go for the future to
the DotCom Boom-Bust, to the telco, data, bio, nano,
laws that are purchased by special-interest to protect market-share
or defend mythical moral-truths. All wasting (almost treasonable) our
nations' money, resources, time, and future vainly trying to stop
reality and change. I hope that soon more of our national leaders
will recognize and understand that education, domestic policy,
national interest, and a solid focused Defense will provide peace and
prosperity for our children's future long before the following of the false-gods of capitalist greed and religious myth.
____ Capitalism is good as an economic model (I like it, as best ... political dazzler pageants that
possible), but as a Governing principle it will prove to rank with
Communism as a failure. I hope we return to the democratic
aspirations (all are equal) of the founding father ASAP. Citizens
have the right to vote, but special-interest buy the votes with the
best sound-bites, best dressed,
have ever existed. We need to disenfranchise all special-interest
from corrupting our democracy and destroying our future. I recommend
that all US citizens vote against all corporate, political, and
religious incumbents until there are laws that exist which result in
prison and/or loss of citizenship when special-interest attempt to
influence and when politicians act for special-interest.
____ Oh, PLEASE, do not play the Rush pundit dogma-rhetoric game ..., then you are far to delusional to
of how do you define special-interest. If you need that logic to
validate your reality
understand reality.
Reality is a self induced hallucination.
Has anyone noticed ... that when I get any excuse I slam
special-interest followers.

SCO has finally gone fishing nuts.
... time ... time ... will the FSF Foundation ever get reimbursed for all the time spent from a company that will just file bankruptcy when needed.
... over months and years. That guy at SCO he ain't smart enough for such tactical/strategic thought ... I wonder who the real software boss is?
....
... $30 for everything copied and shipped ... sounds like they may want to know exactly which trash-dump FSF's trash was tossed in for the past decade. Then, maybe, next year SCO will ask FSF and RMS to deliver the trash dump to SCO.
Just me, from when I started my archives in 1987, for email and personal/work files (with some whoops redundancy).... I have a little over 10G [lots of pictures, some text, a few corrupt files, and I know there must be a couple ancient MS-DOS and/or CP/M viruses entombed for posterity].
If they want everything from FSF/GNU/RMS/EmployeeA-z/ContactA-Z/.... They could be fishing for years, and catch a few interesting zip-null files for all their efforts. Those folks at SCO must be getting sustenance from a deep-pockets source for these fishing expeditions, because they are wasting everyone's time
Maybe that is it, they are trying to bankrupt the FSF foundation by having everyone working at the FSF for nothing and costing time and money
I will continue to make ($20-$200) donations to FSF and others, but I will continue to keep it all hand2hand without receipts or tax benefits. I don't got time or money for SCO to get me or maybe the US software Gestapo that went after that nice Georgia Cracker lady that protects the USA Constitution, Democracy, and voting

However, the examples only show ways that businesses can exploit OS "software products" for ROI. Businesses using these SOS BS will outlast/outperform other business making the proprietary "stovepipe" (one choice, no options) mistake.
