Three
types of employees:
(1)
those that make all things possible (hardware, software, science, technology,
art, literature, commitment, loyalty, satisfaction, drive, profit,...),
(2)
those that clock-punch, do-a-job, are socially functional, expects a $ for a $ effort,
will plagiarize (Type-1's subordinates' work) for career advantages.

those that are pet-rocks of CEO/SES/..., have exceptional (almost sociopathic) social
skills, will take all the credit whenever things go right, point the finger at
others when things go wrong, their prime purpose is to manage their career,
because (they believe) only Type-3's can be successful bosses/managers (right,
they know not their job).
I
have known all three types at every position in Government and Business.
Sometimes the Type-3 will be the CEO/SES, have other pet-rocks for affirmation,
and believe that Type-2 folks do everything that is needed, because of Type-3
management ability, and Type-1 jerks/fools are the cause of all
problems.
Following
the above logic (THIS IS TRUE!): [A] Management says: (1) everyone is
replaceable (get rid of the problems), (2) worker-bees cannot be promoted into
management, because we need them to do the work, (3) pack-mules are great they
get the work done and you can load them up with the important task. [B]
Employees say: (1) screw-up move-up, (2) It is not what you know, but who you
blow, (3) give head to get ahead. I have heard both "A&B" quotes from Type-3
management people, but employees (all three types) stick to the "B"

observation is that a Capitalist Republic is little better than a Ferengi Republic, though either
can be camouflaged as a Democratic Republic, Capitalism remains an economic

Expectations" for all.
Any
of these models/philosophies are better than all previous governing or ruling
attempts by humanity. Kings/Emperors (Louie, Caesar, Napoleon,...), Dictators

management teams to have (as equals) mutual respect with employees. Firing a
few employees every now/then proves to anyone who may consider themselves equal
that they are totally replaceable by other subordinate worker-bees, pack-mules,

institutions. Religious institutions (all faiths) around
the world continue to fall into three groups (1) the good and pious (I like and

If you can afford an old logic analyzer (maybe 8/16-pin, at surplus stores) for the I/O buses they can help you optimize your code. Years ago, (when I did) I would have used, an appropriate Hex/Machine code to do a small project like this. If you and a couple colleagues/friends succeed at this level... the lessons you teach yourselves and experience obtained will be significant... not many universities teach at this "wide-concept" "Master-O-None, Jack-O-All" level anymore. You stated things very well. I know from personal on the job experience. The situation was regretable to me, now I stay out of trouble and keep my mouth shut on new/inovative technologies. The situation has improved a little over the past decade, but has a long way to go.
There are many good hands-on TEK (Technology Experience and Knowledge) folks in Government Service (GS) who are ignored as non-team players when providing multiple options and questions as to what/where/when/how specifics on technology use (... VTC-H.324/H.323, VOIP-Circuit/Packet Switching, Bandwidth management IP/ATM, Cell Phones-Analog/Digital/1G/2G/3G).
Professional (hands-on, people that do... make it reality, not contract and paper pushers) GS Technolgy advisors/consultants are frequently pushed into the background during meetings, notified late in the acquestion process or after systems fielded about problems that need to be resolved by tomorrow, rated on their one/two minor (cost/impact) annual mistakes rather than their 101+ successes during the year. No respect, low pay,..., and the government wonders why the best of the GS TEK folks are going to the highest commercial market bidder and/or taking part-time (after hours, weekends, vacations) outside commercial Installation/consulting jobs. The best of the young leave and the older TEK folks stick around making a little retirement money on the side.
PLEASE, don't get me wrong there are some very good managers in GS and I enjoy (very much) who I support as a customer, but TEKs (Geeks old/young) are not respected and some Acquisitions and Logistics smoke-blowing folks who look great to higher-level managers cause come of these contracts, regulations, and policy problems.
TEK-Geeks (AKA: Worker-Bees a/o Pack-Mules by management) may look and act a bit different from the coat and tie desk-jockies, but (as a group) are always as professional as any desk-jockie or Lab-bit.
I regret my lack of knowledge and experience makes me totaly unqualified. Also, my open attitude of reality and self-directing ethics does (I believe) limit my job prospects with any military group.
The pay and benifits packages would be poor, job satisfaction very if'ee.

Currently I would advise use a local banker with internet access (just in case...) and internet brokers like eTrade, Datek, DLJ,... for investments and research. Currently I have, but would not recommend any home-office finacial software applications, because they are purty packages of ledger and printer fluff and not very helpful in tactical/strategic financial planning.
Being it is the season... I would recommend Intuit's Turbo Tax Delux (if you do it yourself) or a good CPA.

If you're a very small company or just some geeks putting together a network for kith and kin then a MultiLink PPP connections 56K dialup technology tandem/parallel modem bank like the Diamond products "http://209.10.46.176/default.asp?menu=suprasonic_ II&sub_menu=&item=" Technology (with two 56K modems you could maybe attain up to 112Kbps downloads), and just connect multiLink modems when you need LAN to LAN connectivity. I don't look at ISDN anymore as a communications solution... ISDN and PPP is sometimes the only option provided in an area. Why ATM, because with an ATM backbone access at bothe LANs, switched LANs/Routers/Hubs to an ATM backbone, and Ethernet infrastructure (cables/connectors/...) data delivery latency for even VTC may not be a major factor (eliminating ISDN drops/requirements). Why ADSL, well depending on the local cable/phone company owners' policy (and government regulations) you could do an ADSL link to control bandwidth cost (ADSL provided bandwidth at about 11 times ISDN 128K and for about the same price, maybe a little more).
So! The big question is what can you afford in bandwidth, and will that bandwidth fulfill customer applications requirements for a few years? If not (for any reason, and after talking to the local phone companies' folks) ask for more money for your project.

PLEASE, don't get me wrong there are some very good managers in GS and I enjoy (very much) who I support as a customer, but TEKs (Geeks old/young) are not respected and some Acquisitions and Logistics smoke-blowing folks who look great to higher-level managers cause come of these contracts, regulations, and policy problems.
TEK-Geeks (AKA: Worker-Bees a/o Pack-Mules by management) may look and act a bit different from the coat and tie desk-jockies, but (as a group) are always as professional as any desk-jockie or Lab-bit.
I regret my lack of knowledge and experience makes me totaly unqualified. Also, my open attitude of reality and self-directing ethics does (I believe) limit my job prospects with any military group.
The pay and benifits packages would be poor, job satisfaction very if'ee.
I hope they realize that a distributed (home-office with 90-120 TDY to locations maybe) group would be the best approach for a robust, reliable, suvivable option in any CVW.

Why ATM, because with an ATM backbone access at bothe LANs, switched LANs/Routers/Hubs to an ATM backbone, and Ethernet infrastructure (cables/connectors/...) data delivery latency for even VTC may not be a major factor (eliminating ISDN drops/requirements).
Why ADSL, well depending on the local cable/phone company owners' policy (and government regulations) you could do an ADSL link to control bandwidth cost (ADSL provided bandwidth at about 11 times ISDN 128K and for about the same price, maybe a little more).
So! The big question is what can you afford in bandwidth, and will that bandwidth fulfill customer applications requirements for a few years? If not (for any reason, and after talking to the local phone companies' folks) ask for more money for your project.
