As an SF-SciFi reader for decades I find it unfare to compare the authors and classics of the past with todays' artist and materials.
Anyway speaking well of "Robert Heinlein" and Geeks... does any one remember "Orphans of the Sky"? One of the Geeks/Missfits Originals of SciFi that told US we might just be a little better than those that think/feel themselves to be better. As a kid (10-15yo) in the early 60's, this was my favorite book (I never forgot it). By todays' standards it would be boaring reading, but I read it when I needed some heros and Bob delivered.
Any one know who wrote the following line about reality?
Many (maybe most/all) politicians are elected on the basis of money/spending, not character/honor, US Constitution Support, US American people support. In the US our politicians (some of who in the last 25 years trace their family tree back to the founding fathers or some big time criminal) are becoming our aristocracy supported by the dollar more than the people.
The US individuals' (and most of Europe) vote counts for one-third or less of a vote, because corporate-money counts for one-third of the vote, and politician or PAC self-interest counts for one third of the US vote. Money provided to political election by forign nations, corporations, PACs,... ain't no different, because it is all used to convince many US Americans that the special interest is in the individuals' interest even when the US Constitution and people are treated as insignificant to day-to-day global events.
So, Vote for what BS-Smoke is how this century ends, and now maybe a dawn of a new dark ages without a us constitution (Politician-Aristocrats)in control of our future...?
My Question: Can we use the internet to build a Free Global Nation of People (F-GNP) interested in the advancement (Education, Health, Quality of life,...) of all humanity?
I pledged (about 30 years ago) to protect and defend the US Constitution, I will until the day I die. I could also pledge to defend and protect such a Global Nation with the primary interest of promoting and building institutions dedicated to human advancement and community.

For me liberty is a concept that has varying value for US all. Security can only be secured by the efforts of the community (US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Sudan, Burma,... Global). Linux is some Kool shit. I was just forced to upgrade 6 year old P1-90Mhz-PCs with Win95/16MRAM/1GHD/...) to a duo-op (WinNT + Unix, +64MRAM/+4GHD) (no money, no time, no thanks,....) for a gov TEK (Technology Experience & Knowledge) learning center (TFG for Linux) management has no TEK idea/concept. I used my own copy of redhat-6.0.
Six months ago they did not listen to me (I said Linux... two months ago their TEK consultant said Solaris/i386 (I said Linux...)... two weeks ago they could not load Solaris/i386; So, this past week I installed and setup a small LAN connected with Telecoms (two old tactical circuit-switches and six cisco 2514 routers). Software Operating Systems (SOS) (WinNT-DOS and Linux-unix) worked very well together.
RH-Linux loaded up in one-quarter (okay maybe one-half) of the time for WinNT, very straight forward network configuration for Linux, a little confussion about the network....
Linux-RH with all the GNU, Gnome,... and other apps make Linux very user friendly. Linux-RH is a very competative package... high-school and college freshman students could learn to install/use Linux-RH as easy as WinNT, in less time, on older ($75 hand-me-down) PCs, and have all/more apps/features (network/management/internet/...) than offered by a WinNT platform.
Y'all have done a dang good job. What I was able to do in a week surprised me.

Control/take the weapons and encryption tools from the citizen and then the evil (politicians/criminals) will control the people.
No one should ever think that any government is honest/good (individual politicians may be good), because an institution (Government) has no ethics (ethics/feelings/honor reside exclusivly [in varying degrees] in the individual human trust.).
Never trust an institution (church, government, corporation,...) and always be prepared to defend yourself, kith, and kin!
Who's to blame a/o are you whining? I have said, for many years, only users and administrators can secure a system/network. Also; if it breaks, then the user is never held responsible, because the user can be blamed for system/network problems, but the administrator must always resolve the problem. In other words never blame the customer-user of a system a/o network - for the designed and/or innate weaknesses and problems of the systems/networks.
A stupid user with the same password on multiple systems or an enterprise/corporate/research network that requires a user to maintain 10 to 20 passwords for day to day work is "almost" as stupid as the user.
For real security always think point/person to point/person and network I/O ledger/log (monitor payload for terminal/user signature and sensitive content)... Identify either/both ends of the security breach and eliminate the source/s. Actively defend your systems/networks at the point/terminal/person (in your network) and know all network I/O sources.
The person at the terminal end, and/or the administrator of the network is always the cause of the security breach. If you don't look at and demand security built in to your H/S, then why should H/S companies put a priority on system/network security and spend profit dollars on developing better H/S security. However, no matter what H/S security is developed, I expect security breaches will happen as long as users and administrators don't work together and brief each other on "How To" secure....
Lets not ask congress for more (forever lasting) worthless/unworkable laws that allow US to blame the criminals for self-inflicted problems by lazy administrators, Tech-Stupid CEOs/Bosses,..., uninformed/untrained users.... Security is the issue for all US not just the TAP of IM/IT/TelCom/... administrators and techs.

A culture without national boundries, human rights equality for all, a religion based on the true good of advancing the interest of humanity,.... What would be our 10 Commandments or Ammendments that would bind US All together forever and protect US from the totalitarian militaries others?
We can not make a social program/theory (Communisim) fit economic policy, or allow an economic theory (Capitalism, Supply & Demand) to determine the future of humanity.

Genetic companies have had a tough time. I expect that the future Molecular a/o Atomic Engineering a/o Architecture companies will have a few bad (big Ups-Downs) years before extreamly significant gains. I expect that there will be major software requirements for the machines and processes required for fast-efficient tailored a/o batch manufacturing.

Y'all did cover all the ground on the issue. I side with you people that just want to share and provide usable information. I work as a US-CS. I have used email almost daily sense August 1984. I have used mainframe computers that had transistor processor cards, core memory, and harddisc with multiple (more than 20) fixed RW heads (I'm a little older than some of you.). I'm just an old make-it-work TEK (Technology Experience and Knowledge). I'm a little out of date, due to US-CS, but I still get tagged to learn and teach the newer stuff (like Linux) as technology things (very slowly) come along to US-CS.
As a customer of technology products for two decades now with multiple format data-file archives dating back more than a decade... one thing that has aggravated me is all the software products and updates that have left me with little/no-way to read some of those old historical files. So, standard internet formats (or something else) may provide a backwards compatibility for the next century of software products. I can hope... html, ASCII, Txt, gif, jpg, wav,... whatever. Data transfers should be as basic as possible, and local applications should provide (user a/o group selectable) formats, enhancements, display,... subdued/hidden could provide required formatting information.
In the future we all want a direct "What I See Experience - You Experience See (WISE-YES)" now, later, a/o whenever archived for the future archaeologist/anthropologist/.... The end of lost history. Voice file formats for task and communications are important... Collaboration, Sharing, Recording real-time WISE-YES for additional repetitive task... Personal avatar generation for calendar/schedule/PIM/... non-critical and repetitive task. There are still many file formats and requirements in the future that may provide me further aggravations before I drop dead in the next millennium. The again maybe companies and countries will work together to make all consumers happy with standard formats for everything including language translations.
I say forget MS, because MS (I believe) is making some of the same mistakes IBM, GM,... and other big CEO boys) made in the "70s/80s". The big mistake is trying to dictate to the customer. I see Sun, Lotus,... others making the same mistake. Customer control (by local IT/IM/ADP/... and/or product/service provider companies) is stupid and piss-poor business practices. Business and people who try to control and dictate will eventually burn themselves and blame the changing economy. Consumers may not be tech literate, but consumers are not stupid; however, business/managers sometimes prove to be....
I expect that there will, over the next 5 to 20 years, be major business (all non-tech, banking, telco,...) upheavals due to the "Technology Corporates' Desire/Nature to Rule a Market", "Consumers desire/nature to collaborate/share...", and most "Corporates and Consumers desire/nature to avoid Technology Application knowledge". So why the upheavals, because companies are institutions and all to frequently CEOs, CIOs, Management,... will cop an elitist attitude that ignores customers' expertise. The customers' expertise is the knowledge of what makes them happy or aggravated, and what they need for day to day living. Happy customers with a need will always build a strong marketable product line and loyal customers. Most customers are smarter than any CEO, CIO,... at what they want and need.
I hope one day that management, IT/IM/..., and companies will ask what do I want to use on my desk for productivity, but until all data is transferred without problems within/without the internet, companies, and customers (I guess) others will dictate/control what is on my desk at work (currently old hardware one "1995" laptop P1 with win98 [approved by IT/IM], and a "1996" p1 desktop with linux and winNT [hidden from IT/IM], both on the net with 253/254 IPs). At home I'm much better off, "1996" and "1999"... Linux, Win98, WinNT, and Win2K-beta3 (everything paid for and legal).
Anyway, I know it'll get better, but it has been a big problem for many years (maybe another decade)....

Back in my "late 1970s" college days I did a paper on Karl Pribram's "Holographic Brain Theory"; So, I did a HotBot search for "exact phrase" and found a little history for those that may want to read the origin. I don't recall much of my paper or Karl Pribrim's theory, but I did like the thoughts it provoked. I believe at the time Karl Pribrim was at MIT.
Back then "1970s" this was a radical position, it was not taught at the University I attended, folks/theory still taught that we always thought in words which logically and foolishly implied babies and small children were close to brain dead.
Anyway, the memory resource question has an extremly limited perspective. I like what some other folks were talking about, because thought and memory process will far exceed any storage potential when you think of brain function options like Pribrim's Holographic Theory.

I volunteer Shackers for those that attack/betry their own countries.

I agree with the specifics you stated on the technology, use, and cost.
I believe that the FCC is a little weak in getting telcos to open their markets and to impliment new technologies services like ADSL,..., and/or CDMA for homes, offices, and/or travel. Many good communications technologies have been stalled in the market pipes and/or almost FUBAR by international BS & smoke. The customers and citizens always must pay for inferior controlled services. Telcos (including TV Cable,...) want to remain service-utilities companies that control the customers and profit.
I believe, technology has reached the level that communications can be treated as a bandwidth commodity with customers paying (the best provider/price) for what they use, and not because they are connected. The FCC may have to force the issue, because telcos will never support the concept of smart-shopping for product-commodity with all areas/regions covered by multiple carrier-bandwidth providers.
The future could be one or multiple bills from one or multiple providers for all personal/home and/or office communications (Local/Long distant Voice, Data, TV, Radio,...). Maybe an additional PC SW application, in the home, that monitors quality/QOS, services, bandwidth use,... cost, and then notifies the bill payer of communications status and recommends changes in providers when cost are out of line with other bandwidth providers....

I agree.
I'm a moody person, prone to out-burst of insanity, and always thinking of shapes changing color and forms changing hue as relates to my environment, emotions, thought, and situation.
Sometimes I just want to read the fun and funny stuff, other ziet maybe the (on subject/related) weird/odd perspective/perception (maybe cultural/philosoph/religion bent), in the past I looked for the SCIENCE/MATH/FACT FILLED to read, now I think the Artistic maybe of interest, well in the future wasted and lost...?

Software Operating Systems (SOS) (WinNT-DOS and Linux-unix) worked very well together.

I just wanted to say thanks. I hope that news/reporters, industry, and US Congress folks will look you up for consulting. You presented a few significant concepts/directions in a way that most (Non-TEK) CEOs, repoters, politicians, and folks like me could understand and avoid science/technology investment pitfalls.
Genetic companies have had a tough time. I expect that the future Molecular a/o Atomic Engineering a/o Architecture companies will have a few bad (big Ups-Downs) years before extreamly significant gains. I expect that there will be major software requirements for the machines and processes required for fast-efficient tailored a/o batch manufacturing.

So, standard internet formats (or something else) may provide a backwards compatibility for the next century of software products. I can hope ... html, ASCII, Txt, gif, jpg, wav, ... whatever. Data transfers should be as basic as possible, and local applications should provide (user a/o group selectable) formats, enhancements, display, ... subdued/hidden could provide required formatting information.

I don't recall much of my paper or Karl Pribrim's theory, but I did like the thoughts it provoked. I believe at the time Karl Pribrim was at MIT.
