You know, if 20 people volunteered to write some cheesy educational learning software that looks nice and runs on a Linux platform, this idea might actually work. How long would that take? a few days?

I mean, we can sit here all day and chat, but it's really in our best interests to see that this idea works.

And how fitting that this is the last fronteer for Microsoft, the poorest communities, a group that free software would actually make sense for.

Give them 10 good programmers and they can put together a RedHat Distro for educational use. Put some nice learning tools (maybe build some custom ones), staroffice, a web browser, you're set. And after the schools love it, other richer school districts WILL pay money for it. And the development is actually done. This is a brilliant idea, if you ask me. The multimedia PC is dead. It's all web based now, so what does it matter what the browser runs under. And you could set them up as Xterms so every student could have their own desktop. With a large investment in time, a small investment in money, you could have a real nice educational system. Shit, windows comes with a bunch of junk that you don't need. Sorry for the malformed reply but i'm a little drunk. It's thanksgiving.

The sad part is that Macs have been doing this for 4 years, and everyone bashes them. Not that I'm a Mac user. I'm just saying, Macs are good. Super expensive, but they are the Mercedes of PCs. No self respecting executive that does real work is going to have an XP box or perish the thought, Linux. Unless someone can make something that looks nice, runs without any maintenance, and works intuitively. Only Macs can do that today.

Language is high-level. Neurons are low-level. Thoughts themselves are somewhere 'twixt the two.

But thoughts are meaningless noise if they aren't related to anything. Humans need common protocols to communicate. Just like a telnet server can't FTP files humans will be unable to communicate certain ideas without the correct protocols. So, regardless of the technicalities involved, thoughts in any useful (to society) form are based on language.

  17. Blah on Tutoring A Child Prodigy? · · Score: 1

In order to succeed in life you need to know everything about everything. This kid still has 6 years before he can get a job at Dairy Queen. Who cares about programming? The last thing this world needs is another arrogant prick. People are talking about "pushing" this kid, forcing him to learn stuff because they feel that letting this "potential" go to "waste". Guess what, EVERY kid has that potential. Surely some children learn faster than others, but NANOTECH?! Who cares? The kid is going to be lost when he gets to college and doesn't know how to wash clothes or make a meal for himself. People always forget that there are so many little details to being an adult--too many to count. All I'm saying is that if this kid is a fast learner, give him a breadth-first education. Teach him logic and problem solving, skills he can use in a variety of fields. Math is not nearly as important as good language skills, for things are learned from others, and if the boy can read, he can learn on his own. I'm assuming you were hired by the parents to teach this kid. Why not discuss with his parents what he talks about being interested in, and have some fun. I was tutored in much the same way as a child (for computer stuff, C actually), and it sucked. My only relationship to this guy was he was teaching me C. The computer is a really powerful tool, but that is all it is--A TOOL. The child must be taught that, before he gets sucked into it permanently. There is a beautiful world out there--sunsets, oceans, mountains, grass, trees. I only wish I spent more time outside as a child and not in on the computer. I think I would be a much happier person today.

  19. Add, don't subtract on When Is Exchange Inappropriate For The Enterprise? · · Score: 4

I work in the IT department at a large state university (Montana State). We have a number of email servers on many different platforms, from POP on UNIX to pine on VMS to Outlook with Exchange server on NT. We offer options for everyone--some people just want the simplicity and efficiency of pine, some people want POP email with the added features of attachments, etc. that are easy to do on a POP client/server arrangement. Other people need calendars and scheduling that Exchange provides. We charge 10 bucks for email accounts and 90 bucks for exchange? Why? It's more trouble than all the others combined. Not only do the virus issues kill, but when people get their desktops upgraded, oftentimes it is difficult to transfer the multitude of Personal Folders, PABs, Offline Folders, plus maintain all the online stuff. But it's the viruses that are the worst. Everytime there is an outbreak, the idiots just open the attachments and spread it. Luckily for us, everyone has everyone else's email thru the exchange directory, so if one person opens it everyone gets it. We have protection installed the database, luckly, but that doesn't make it any less of a pain. When I LOVE YOU came thru, the virus protection deleted almost 900,000! attachments in a day and exchange was about 4 days behind mail traffic for the next week. The only advice I am going to give you is add, don't subtract. If you think Exchange is a SUBSTITUTE for a nice, reliable *NIX based POP mail, you have another thing coming. Just wait til the next genius virus writer comes along to fuck your shit up. Blah!

Hopefully there will be a rift cut into the system in 2 days. Hopefully people won't be so lazy and realize that the president doesn't matter. All that matters is what the public thinks. The corporate controlled media (GE owns NBC, Westinghouse owns CBS, etc.) has convinced people that there are only 2 candidates but I think that the people are smarter than that this year. It's just an odd vibe. Even if you are already decided, take a second look at ALL the info before you go into the polls Tuesday. Don't watch TV, don't listen to politcal ads--they are DESIGNED to trick you. Just research, and go in there with a clear conscience and vote for who you REALLY believe in. Even if Bush becomes president, it'll only be 4 years. And if Nader or some other 3rd party gets enough votes, maybe they WILL be in the debates then. If they aren't, the public will revolt and tear the media apart. Just remember that there are other sources of information besides those big government contractor owned media outlets (NBC, CBS, ABC), and good luck to whoever you vote for.
