Perhaps the alleged kernel module was built on top of the netfilter code, doing deep packet inspection via xt_string. Theoretically such a system could be constructed to add hidden match rules from an iptables list from userspace, much like past Linux malware has run tasks not listed on the process table.

  4. Winchester deserves most of the credit on AMD 'Venice' Core Shows Big Drop in Power Needs · · Score: 2, Interesting

If you read the article page 7 & 11 (idle vs burn-in and conclusions), you'll see that the winchester (first 90nm core) dropped consumption in half compared to newcastle, and venice improves upon winchester by 10-15% by 1)lower consumption at idle and 2) better IPS throughput on equal mhz.

See that pic of the two dots off tech tv? Yeah i did that to my friend during class, he didnt find it too amusing. Actually the device was in a small pvc tube made up of disposable camera parts, originally was a red strobe from the "neuralizers in MiB" - later turned it into a prodding toy *evil grin*

  6. Good for SBC on SBC Refuses To Name File-Sharing Users · · Score: 2, Insightful

for a DSL company that I've sometimes questioned their technicial decisions, I for one am proud of their stance. I worked as the network admin for a university student network (aka ResNet) of approximately 1500 users, and I can't tell you how many times I fought decisions destined on further monitoring and tracking individual users. It just seems like SBC is trying to prevent a gorilla from harming rats here - not totally innocent customers, but the customers have far more to lose than the RIAA has to gain.

  7. Future Of Software & Open Source Success on U.S. Considers Microsoft Passport as National ID · · Score: 1

The idea of Microsoft at the head of the chain in national authentication is quite scary. Rather, I suggest a radical turn in this area to avoid corporate rule. What if an open source authentication system was really used? Think about it. There are MILLIONS of talented geeks/programmers in the world. Why not turn them loose to develop on/contribute to an open source project that fits their employer's need for a solution. Rather than software companies existing, the market becomes a place where programmers are paid to contribute to the globally available too that a corporation uses? Oh perhaps a new license that requires a organization (profit or non-profit) to have at least n members (based on organization size) contributing toward open source projects in order to be able to use the software? Granted, that would be hard to enforce, but think of the potential if it was. Food for thought :)

I hope others besides I have realized the danger AOL is presenting in our information world today. I would go as far as to say that they present an equal or greater threat than Microsoft. Something has to be done to stop them! It has to start with us. Start teaching your buddies IRC, ween them off AIM. Show people how to search on the net instead of depening on AOL's system. Simple efforts like this can keep AOL from turning into a monopoly giant like MS has been for so long.

I would like to know what is the limiting factor in making LCD's giant-scale. Why haven't we seen them replace even Movie Screens? Obviously cost is a factor, but is there a limiting factor with the technology that prevents it from being scaled?
