  1. Re:Inefficiency on KDE 3.4 Released · · Score: 4, Insightful

There are a few basic replies to this.

    1. You're assuming all 'developers' have the same level of competency and interests. Just because there are 100 contributors doesn't mean that 100 contributors all working on 'window shading' together would make things better, or even be efficient.

    2. KDE (and Gnome) are much more than 'Window Managers'. If that's all you want, use something else.

I do agree that it seems that there are some redundant projects, but seeing multiple projects and code can continue to spur development of projects. If Kopete sees something in Gaim, they can add that feature, or vice versa.

Politics comes into it too. Just because someone contributed something to Gaim doesn't mean the Gaim devs would take the contribution. Having multiple projects for people to contribute to could be seen as fostering innovation, not splitting resources, as more people can express themselves, and (hopefully) the best ideas float to the top.

Whether the whole open source community is a true meritocracy or not is another matter, though I tend to think in most cases it's closer to that than other development models.

  3. java v .net on Job Market for Developers Evaluated · · Score: 0, Troll

Not sure if this is ever considered, but are there more job listings for java people because it takes more java developers to get stuff done? Honestly, really, I'm not a .net fan at all. It's goe some good ideas, but you're hobbled to one platform to be productive with MS tools. Dev tools often make people more productive. I've seen relative newbies make .net do moderately impressive stuff in just a few weeks, while twice as many java people were half as productive. I'm only speaking from my obviously limited perspective (there's only one of me!) but is this ever considered a factor when people talk about the relative number of job postings?

"how can you demonstrate it works?" or "how can you demonstrate future changes will impact what you've done?"

Rethinking in those terms has helped me understand the fundamental need for documented testing practices, over and above 'knowing' something works. I've known things work, as have other people I've worked with. We *know* things work at that moment in time. What we lacked was the ability to demonstrate that things would work with future changes applied.

VERY strange name for something - I thought it when it became law, and just right now.

"We comply with the CAN SPAM act".

Sounds perfectly legit, really. "If we do X, we CAN SPAM".

Why couldn't they have come up with some other acronym to call it the STOP SPAM act or something similarly less ambiguous???

Probably a good 70% of the people I know who use IE do so simply because it came with their computer and not because of some educated choice.
