  1. We in the U.S. sure support our own country! on Japan Considers Moving Away From Windows · · Score: 1

Most of our cars are made in the U.S. (well, parts of the Japanese ones are, sort of), our computers are made in the U.S. (uh, maybe some last-stage assembly), our plastic products are made in the U.S. (what, China isn't a state). Yeah, given the choice we always invest in our own country. Sigh...

  2. Tax ID not required. on Helping Your Ex-Employer? · · Score: 1

It depends on the structure of your business. If you're a tiny consulting company then you can just do a sole proprietership(sp?). The only time you need a tax ID is if you want to eventually hire people.

There are also other issues of legal protection (you get sued for that BSOD). LLCs are a nice way to go in that case, though there is an $800 yearly fee (in CA).

Anyway, IANAL and probably full of it.

    Amen to that,

When I was younger my friend and I had a business mowing lawns. We went to some old lady's house and asked her if we could mow her lawn. She said "Sure" and then after we mowed it she said "You nice young men did such a nice job, thank you." and shut the door...

  4. Judge Ito is American! on Jobs in Japan? · · Score: 1

What you really mean is that there never has been a white judge in Japan. Considering the incredibly miniscule number of white boys who know Japanese law it is not surprising.

  6. MCS[D|E] is cookie cutter! on Continuing an IT Career Without a Degree? · · Score: 1

A degree has more relevance than those certifications whose major purpose is to test how much marketing information you can learn. The MS certs teach very little in the way of theory and theory is what allows you to adapt to changing technology.

  7. Sony has a huge NIH complex. on A More In Depth Look at PS/2 Linux · · Score: 1

One other huge motivating factor for Sony is that they have a huge NIH complex. By driving the hardware and software ends it is all Sony. The only reason they picked Linux and not NeWS is that nobody knows anything about NeWS!

  8. Disney titles change color when played by the PS 2 on The Economist Looks At The Console Industry · · Score: 1

I've had trouble with a lot of Disney titles on the PS2 (and that's with the "new" DVD player code). I couln't play Pinocchio without the colors changing while playing; same thing for the Book of Pooh.

  12. They wouldn't translate it! on 1394 Trade Association Adopts FireWire Brand · · Score: 1

If SONY wanted to use the Firewire name they would have either used the English without modification (like USB) or spelled it phonetically using katakana. The real reason SONY didn't want to use the name was that SONY has a HUGE (I mean HUGE!!!) NIH complex. [NIH = Not Invented Here].

  13. Quantum Phenomena are microscopic! on Science a Mystery to U.S. Citizens · · Score: 1

This drives me crazy. Quantum phenomena are MICROSCOPIC (actually sub-nanoscopic) phenomena so you don't get those effects at the macroscopic (our) level. That's why quantum mechanics was developed AFTER classical physics (and relativity).Classical physics worked well enough at the macro level except for a few things. Those few things were covered by relativity, except a few things. Those things are being covered by quantum mechanics, except a few things, etc, etc...

The most interesting thing about the Plate Tectonics requirement is that it is currently theorized that LIQUID water is required to get it. It's the hydration of the crust that allows subduction to occur.
