Depends, to my kids 30 is old. But hey, preaching to the quire. I am quite a bit older than 30 and I'm one of those consultants hired for my expertise. I was just addressing the original poster who seemed to be quite young (~20s, so there, you young punks, get off my lawn!).
I agree with you though, you cannot take it with you. I do, however, question your assertion that you need to spend 70-100 hours a week to keep on top of things.
Also, watch out for that MBA. A lot of MBAs spend a lot of time away from their families. Having an MBA doesn't shield you from the grind, you're just grinding different (is that an Apple slogan?).
For all the talk about "aged" brains and the like the professor didn't mention that _most_ consultants are older (30s - 50s) and presumably are hired for their skills...
I hate to burst your bubble but the VAST majority of workers in Japan do not have the "job-for-life" that people get so exited about over here. It is only the full time workers at large corporations and even that is changing. The large companys balance out hirings and firings by hiring large numbers of contractors (most of whom went to "2nd tier" schools). Also, google "freeters" and see what is happening now...
about meaningless contests. Many of the best programmers (here and abroad) are out doing something besides entering meaningless contests. Hardly an indictment of our educational system.
First NAFTA moved the jobs from the US to Mexico. Now the jobs are moving from Mexico to China. The Mexicans were "overpaid" at $4,000 a year while the Chinese make $1,000 a year. CEO pay is, of course, higher than ever.
I'm not surprized at all that they are going with their own processor. SONY has the WORST case of NIH (not-invented-here) syndrome of any company that I've seen. When I worked there some (~10) years back I had to design, build, and write the software for a high end broadcast video card (made from about 64 Megs of STATIC RAM YOWZA!) because they felt that they had to have their own and didn't want to buy one! A huge waste of time but fun for me.
Where I'll just skip it with my TiVO. Which will then tell the EFF I skipped it which will get me some spam which my filter will delete. Problem solved!
>an offer to increase my bust size (I'm a guy), Yeah, but you're a slashdot reader so you probably have a man-bust. I know I do (!@#$%! New Year's Resolution)...
True enough. However, more and more of our commercial software is coming out of India and soon, China. Personally, I 'm a lot less concerned about where the overpaid CEO lives than where the bulk of the workers live. I prefer supporting local workers over local CEOs.
"Do you remember, 21st night of September..."
Had to be said.
>It's all for reserved for Doom III on longhorn.
Sorry, I'd played Doom III yesterday at E3. That's joke is (in your best Iron Chef voice) o-vah!
>Look. 30s is not "old".
>I don't care what age you are. 30 is not old.

American labor laws don't apply in India.
It had to be said...
ack!
The Waltons didn't "cleverly split their wealth". Sam Walton, who owned it ALL, croaked and that is what his heirs got.

Get it straight.
How about any one of the top 10 algorithms? My fave is the Fast Multipole Method.
You know it had to be said....
only if there's a G3 in the photo. Where's the G3?
The G3 is on the M$ loading dock....

The population of India is so large that they could absorb ALL the IT jobs in the U.S. and still have people left over...
At least I can get behind outsourcing natural disasters. I'm sure other folks won't like it though.
My god, it's full of stars!
or more topical
My god, it's full of SARS!

Not when I'm working with my soldering iron it isn't!
or China, or Eastern Europe...

The definition of struthious. It means ostrich-like for those who don't want to click.

I certainly hope the ride isn't run by Windows CE. A BSOD half way up wouldn't be fun... Although, maybe CE could then stand for "Coasters Ejecting".
