Sure, the big media is all corporate controlled and puts the rich white man spin on everything, but there's plenty of other news outlets, and almost every large city I've been in has a newspaper whose sole reason for existance seems to be to criticize the big media paper in town. Afghanistan? No free press. Saudi Arabia? No real free press.
I would hasten to say that there is no free press in this country (USA). Although there are many news outlets (networks, internet) its pretty clear that they are all getting exactly the same information, just distributing it in different ways. The problem lies in the stupidty of the average US citizen when it comes to geopolitical affairs. Americans have no idea the rest of the world exists, largely because other countries dont affect our news. When Americans are confronted with complicated multinational issues, they cringe, because they realize they know nothing... their response: bomb them till they comply to our ideology.
One last thing... our American "free press" you describe has dropped the ball on so many stories I can't even begin to list them all. A good example is the Patriot Missile. Not a single Patriot Missile ever destroyed a Scud during the Gulf War, the Israelies have their own ballistics reports that are widely available online... yet no one in the American media thought to question the reliability or accuracy of Patriot Missile. Why? Because the Army told us and the U.S. Government would never lie, would they?
My point is this: the media in the USA is manipulated as much as in repressive or dictatorial regimes with state controlled propaganda machines.
There are X-box's and GC's on the shelves where I live, but this I hear is quite rare. The only thing I had trouble finding was component video cables for my GC, Nintendo clearly was unable to anticipate demand.
If you are talking about the Total Recall apartment, with full high resolution plasma's that are seemlessly integrated into the wall, approximately 10-15 years, unless there is a major breakthrough in lcd/plasma display manufacturing.
Of the x-box luanch games I have played, only one has impressed me, DOA 3, and even then largely because of its graphical enhancements as opposed to gameplay enhancements. Overall, X-box is clearly capable of quality graphics, perhaps the most stunning yet on a console, however I hasten to remind people that gameplay will win out over graphics in the long run. My real question is, why isnt there a truly innovative title in the lineup for X-box? Why isn't there a Pikmin, or another "quirky" game? Old games with fresh graphics do not a system make.
I take issue with/. flaming a product that hasn't even come out yet, it seems a little gauche to judge something you haven't yet USED.
It is becoming increasingly typical for the "know it alls" who seem to run things around here to shoot their mouths off about everything in the world they don't understand.
Anyone who labels the iPod "Lame" has no aesthetic for either technology or beauty, and has the linux users equivalent of "penis envy".
I have a Apple B&W g3 400 which I bought for $1999... its been a solid performer for 3 years now. If you consider the fact that apple provides me with all the software I need (iMovie, iTunes, etc), its easy to see that I have spent less on computers over the last 3 years than most pc users (including you). My question for you is this: Why did you upgrade in the first place? Maybe because pc's just dont last... they are garbage and constantly need upgrading, the new software never works with old hardware, and you have to download about 6 drivers just to get the thing to work! Face it... Macs are cheaper, easier to use, and dont require a CPU refit every year to keep up.
It would seem to me that this is a perfect opportunity for Ice Ray technology... how far has it come? Why isnt it being used on this device, and why cant we have it installed on our satellites so we never have fires again? You can burn stuff with a laser from space... why cant you freeze stuff?
Looks Like Herdy Gerdy
on
The New Zelda
·
· Score: 1
It looks as if Miyamoto liked Herdy Gerdy, so much... he decided a cartoon game would be a good way to showcase the new system. Its pretty clear that the new console horsepower is allowing Miyamoto and others to design movies (cartoons) you can play.
Apple had it (CD-ROMS) on all their machines first, but that was just because they had control over the platform and were able to force the customers to buy things.
You just cant force people to buy anything, its a free market buddy, people have choices... if pc's could do what macs do, people would buy them instead of paying the "premium" you say they pay when they purchase a mac.
This is the benefit of not having an installed base. PCs needed to ship with 5.25" drives because that was the standard. Over time 3.5" drives won against 5.25" drives because people wanted them, not because Apple used them.
Another moronic point... all you do is illustrate that Apple (to use your own words) gives "people what they want"... and in most cases way before pc engineers figure out that its the smart thing to do. What happens here is the pc world's equivalent of penis envy... you guys see the mac has something you dont (usb, 3.5 inch drives, TV on the desktop to name a few) and you guys go running to the nearest forum to try and boost your crumbling self-confidence and justify your love of legacy apps and your unerring devotion to backwards compatibility.
The rest of your points dont even warrant comment, other than this... its clear you dislike macs. But heed this warning: dont fall victim to Bill Gates propaganda, you actually sound as if you beleive everything MS tells you is true.
When the Feds busted the retailers of illegal satellite equipment they got all the customer records too, everything sold might have been recorded... its like them saying we know you bought something naughty, in order to scare people.
What does every Slashdot user have in common? They all have toasters for processors. Hahaha, its a shame that Linux and Winblows users are being left out of the revolution. I hate to break the news to you people, but, with the advent of modern risc processing it is now possible to run your computer without a fan or cooling of any kind. Get an Mac and you people wont need that wind tunnel for the toaster you guys call a CPU.
The US is not "by leaps and bounds the most free country in the world", it is anything but. Holland is the most free country in the world. The US is either a Police State or a Representative Democracy, but freedom is not guaranteed in the US or any other country, even the Netherlands. Perhaps you should condsider the rights of your own body... do you beleive you are free when the US government tells you you cant smoke pot or you cant decrypt signals that float through the air you breath, or how about being gay in Georgia, I beleive that it illegal to be homosexual up until a few years ago? Perhaps you also forget George Bush would overturn Roe V Wade if he didnt have two daughters. Indeed, the only freedom in this world comes from tons of cash... when you can outspend your enemies. Your bottom line determines your freedoms... nothing else, i.e. OJ Simpson. As for Saddam, he blew it. He had the chance to set up the world's greatest server farm without any laws to hinder the available content. Why didnt he host up copies of every album ever made or post tons of copyrighted material just to piss off the West is beyond me. Maybe he knows something we dont?
We shouldnt forget that everyone thought China was going to kill the citizens of Hong Kong by now. It never happened. China is much smarter than many users of this site realize. Remember, everything in China is open source... their copyright system is quite antiquated (warez is the norm). China is basically an open source country... something Slashdot never mentions.
In 2050 are you going to be able to have sex with a Britney Spears robot that looks like she did when she was 12? Of course you are. What about the holodeck on the Enterprise... what the hell is that for...? Don't you think someone would have been busted by now for having underage sex in the holodeck?... it never happened folks. Why? Because everyone on the Enterprise is tossing loads all over the "high-school, early 21st century program". BTW, where does Mark Chmura weigh in on all this?
William Wordworth's defintion of a virgin: "A twelve year old girl... ugly"
I sent this letter to Daily Radar when I heard this happened:
I am glad Nintendo sued you guys. Maybe now you will understand that anything "Unofficial" does not mean you wont get sued. I think Nintendo is right to crack down on "Unofficial" guides like yours... Why, they ruin games and force people to spend more money. "Unofficial" strategy guides are destroying games and making game companies lazy. Your company, a group of gaming experts, goes in and dissects the game leaving nothing left for the gamer. Of course you guys can say: "They are going to get this info off the net anyway", but that is completely BS and you know it. If people want to find out more about a game then they should be on the net doing research about it instead of having their parents buy them a Guide Book they told mom and dad they had to have which spoonfeeds them all the idiosyncracies of a particular game... making them instant experts. Pretty soon every kid has to have the guide so they can more quickly exploit other kids on the block... and its RUINING video games. When I was a child we had to master games by playing them, not reading "Unofficial" guides. As a matter of fact there were no "Unofficial" guides because everybody wasnt trying to squeeze money out of everyone else's pockets and ruining the mystery of video games. Perhaps if you guys didnt publish your strategy guides the quality of games would get better because the game companies would try harder to make games perfect and thoughtful from the start, instead of relying on the Strategy guide they hope to publish becaue they know all of you parasites in the Gaming media will disect the game anyway.
I have spent the last 3 years of my life (with an unlimited budget) in search of the ultimate home theater. Yes, my wires are pure silver dipped in the finest rubber. Yes I have had hundreds of digital amplifers, TV's, receivers, cards, boxes, japanese, plasma, lcd, yada yada... everything. I also lived in Hong Kong for 12 years, which is the capital of the best A/V gadgets I have ever seen.
Here is what I have learned...
1) You are only as good as your Receiver. Get a Denon... don't waste money... any top of the line Denon will do.
2) You are only as good as your Remote Control.
3) There is only one remote control... Sony RM-VL900, if you get anything else you are silly, Remotes with lcd displays (the $200 ones) are useless... you get places much faster with buttons, program the macros into the Sony and you are done, you will never have to get off your ass again and can switch effortlessly between Audio and Vidoes signals and mix them up however you want.
4) HDTV's are nice... but waste money somewhere else, i.e. get a new PowerMac G4 with iDVD so you can make your own DVD's. HDTV is obviously the future but there arent enough channels right now and we havent seen any of the new mpg-4 enabled set top boxes yet.
5) I have a Sony Vega 36"... nuff said. Plasmas and LCD's are the future, but right now the Vega Tube is a pretty class act. I have an Apple Cinema display 22" and I watch DVD's on it all the time, but its $3999 for 22" (best money you will ever spend)
6) Speakers... get Energy... best bang for the buck... As I said before, I have an unlimited budget and I use Energy's.
7) Subwoofers... I use Energy... Always remember that not all Subs are Magnetically Shielded. If you can squeeze HSU Research Sub into your setup (they are big), I certainly recommend those too... although it may stop your heart.
8) You are only as good as your center channel... with the increase in Dolby Digital and Dolby Prologic sources it becomes important for voices and mid-range bass to be accurately displayed by your center channel. James Earl Jones voice will sound like a fairy without a properly sized center channel (ie not one of those little Bose's or the rinky dink speakers that come with your average 5 speaker bundle).
I cannot put into words all the subtleties involved with getting really nice pictures and sounds to come out of a digital set up... so much simply doesn't work together and every thing electrical emits "noise" of some kind. Eliminating noise and vibration are the hardest things to do in home theater. Sound proof rooms with padded everything is expensive ya know. You also have to remember its not about getting your ears to bleed, its about hearing Charlize Theron wisper in your ear.
I hope this helps some really lazy people. Thats what I have turned into now that i have the ultimate A/V rig.
Those fascists at the Gartner Group failed to mention Mac OSX, which imho is quite an interesting *nix variant. My guess is that they, like most people, dont take macOS seriously... this is a big mistake. Now, its pretty easy to do everything you do in Unix on a Mac, plus you get the benefits of a good looking GUI. Once you see the 2d of mac OSX, reading text on other OS's just plain sucks. Eyestrain from long hours of text editing (what most IT people do) will play a big factor in modern OS purchases by IT professionals, especially as we spend more time in front of the puter each passing day.

This is the same idea as the "singularity" by that famous science writer... i forget his name. Someone who knows the author of the singularity theory should post. This guy Lanier is a fat amoeba who uses osmosis to steal from people much smarter than him. Also, it is so poorly written only a Hollywood screenwriter or a english professor on crack could understand what the hell this guy is talking about. He is a moron.

USB is unecessary and a step backwards... all new macs have firewire, and Apple doesn't care about pc's, because they too are a step backwards.

The new ones have a 802.11 port so it can also be used as a wireless hub. A nice feature imho.
Trouble free for 6 months so far (cable).
THE BOMBS HAD TO BE INSIDE THE BUILDINGS... IT LOOKED LIKE THE WERE DESTROYED FLOOR BY FLOOR.
The Planes were just to say "LOOK AT US!" and to divert emergency personnel to the area.
The Bombs went off after so as to maximize the damge to government agencies responding to the area.
This was very coordinated and very expensive... getting that much explosives inside the building was very expensive.
Of course this is all purely speculation... but as I said... IT LOOKS LIKE A CLASSIC IMPLOSION.
It would seem to me that this is a perfect opportunity for Ice Ray technology... how far has it come? Why isnt it being used on this device, and why cant we have it installed on our satellites so we never have fires again? You can burn stuff with a laser from space... why cant you freeze stuff?
