The RIAA seem's to have trouble understanding if you want to keep something a secret you don't ask unpaid members of the public to do your work. Just because you look foolish does not mean people are not allowed to point that out in public.
Voice recognition in medical informatics has reached a point where they need standards for voice reporting. The newer systems out now can handle most accent's with no real problem. And the standard for accuracy in medical devices far exceeds any consumer product.
"It's conditioning. For instance, in Muslim countries women aren't leered at and treated as sex objects, because society conditions them not to." But murdering them based on rumor for reasons of male honor is okay. And of course buying 11 year old girls from India and calling them brides is non sexist too. It is awfully easy to see the faults of other's while ignoring your own.
I think most of us would actually pay for better filtering capabilities in our email client. It would be nice to go weeks on end with out modifiying my filter to catch the latest gimick.
Steve Jobs and crew talk a lot about creativity and innovation. But this ethos seems to stop when nobody is paying them. They need to realize they don't have the monopoly Micro$oft has. If they haven't figured out yet that free software and user support is what has kept many users from leaving long ago then they will be in for a real surprise when nobody want's to develop for OSX.
What about the teachers? People seem to forget there is a group of adults around these kids all day. Parents want to trust that they will spot the next kid who will go on a rampage. But say nothing when teachers seem unable to see bullying in the halls and classrooms.
Open source needed developers had a need that no one else was meeting. Now Apple is wants to decide what need and how. Why would I give any of my precious time and skill to a company that will only attack me for making their product better. Apple wants to be the creative persons computer, as long as you do what they want.
The idea of peer review and testing during development is not new. So you have buddie, wowwee. Maybe what is new is the idea that software development is not some weird voodoo that mere mortals can't understand. Ask an engineer if any of these idea's sound new.
Funny SGI dosen't seem to mind the word Open when the word source follows it. Attacking a community the you want to derive benefit from just seems stupid. Way to go keep this up and you will go back to being the only one making software for your equipment.
I notice no mention of Microsoft going after the government. Might be interesting if the claim the right to audit the NSA or DoD. And why isn't RAMBUS suing somebody over this?
The way Mon$anto find's crops is right out of X-Files. They were sending small planes over farmers fields and dropping chemicals. If the plants died you didn't have MonSanto plant material. If the plant's did die you were free and clear. They say they did this to ensure you didn't plant any saved seeds from the year before without paying a fee. When you think about it Mon$anto now expects people to ensure nature stops the cross pollination process the has be around for millions of years. Nice to know you are now legally liable for wind.
Thses guy's look like theif's and liar's not hackers. Hell even calling them script kiddies is a compliment. We don't call scam artits who use the phone Phreaks, so why do we call someone who happens to use a computer a hacker? I use GIMP to resize a picture at work am I now a multimedia professional?
The great thing about multiple distros is how specialized they can be. With Winblow$ you get this generic one size fits all. But each application of systems has different needs. Fight with anything long enough and you learn use the right tool for the job.
Digital recordings may sound better longer, but I'm starting to miss the days when I owned the property I paid for. Just wait untill the all digital book is commen. You won't be able to read the constitution with out paying a fee. Now that's the "free" market at it's best.
See if you will get a chance to do field related coop's during the year and summer. Will really help when start thinking about what you will do after school. See what the offer in the way graduate programs. Hardware or software are large fields. A masters will help you pursue the fields that interest you.
Now you see why to get an education. You will find the engineering and science fields are filled with endless repitition. But the repetition will be broken up by things you find interesting. And you usually get to choose where you want to put your efforts. Testing a new chip design or pushing a mop are both boring. But which would you pick.
The posts seem to point to a mix of professional and student. Professionals provide a level of expesrience and accountability students don't. But some of the most progressive and cutting edge stuff will probably come from the students. Sounds a lot like the real world to me. Seems like a great way to go to me.
This is a little of topic. But look at flat panel displays. They may be more expensive the crt's but the life is much longer. Also be ready for sticker shock when looking at the. You will be looking at about 10 thousand for a video card monitor combo to start. Also be aware reporting systems are now starting to be DICOM compliant.
Now M$ will require me to have a Nic or modem. Or be forced to take time out of my day to call them for a number. Are they willing to guarantee call centre's that answer my call quickly. How about an OS that never crashes. Can you imagine calling them for a new number for every reinstall. Adding to a companies support costs seems to be a ridulous way to sell a product. Unless they are willing to seriously improve service and support along with quality why upgrade?
Insted of Xterm to get a CLI maybe now this will let me stay at command line and run multiple GUI tools with it.
More choice to work they way I need.
I can't argue with that.

It seems the the only career path worth following these days is that of patent or copyright lawyer.

Now several electronics mfg's can band together to produce chips. The chip making club will still be small just not as small or as expensive.

If I could work and hunt the wump at the same time I would never leave my keyboard.

Wow more open source at the high end. And we are seeing more at the low end. Feeling squeezed micro$oft.
Seems to me that the concern is not so much with the standard but with how it is used. Same old story, wait and see.
