    Why do six year old's using toys designed by forty year old engineers represent a new future?
    At times we seem so in love with our own cleverness we forget how to put things into context.

    The discussion seem's to be are you for or against patents. Insted of debating the actual merit of the patent. The articles that started this pointed out many firms sue and expect the companies to settle because it is cheaper than going to court. That is extortion. And much different than creating something new and having somebody else make it with out your permission.

    It would just be nice to see government skewing policy towards the majority they claim to represent. Sure we may get populist laws but the boring laws that have deep impact seem to forget the people too often. Even Adam Smith (the great free market hero) noted you can't have just one system exclusively without causing social harm. So we have to rely on governmet to struggle and find the right balance.
    But untill people start putting real pressure on government to do a better job representing them, I'm just yelling into the wind.

    Gotta love the American freemarket system. If you can't make money get the government to regulate. When you are making money and have near total control complain how government regulation is un-American.
    And the best part is your tax dollars pay for the whole process.

    The RS232 may die out in consumer electronic's. But it will be a long time before is leaves industrial and scientific applications. Few home consumers need the flexibility and simplicity, they are only concerned that the device works and the interest stops after that.

    You may see more freelancer's tow the company line so their work get's bought. Or media outlets only buying work where they own all rights to the work. This would only be attractive to second rate and desperate writer's.
    You only need to look at newspaper or television to see what crap the will put in just to fill up on content.

    Charge large sums of money to access information or move to open source where people actually make an effort to share what they have done. M$ seems to nudge developers further and further away.
    A moving target of an API's and licsenses, make the job hard enough. Like the old cliche "death by a thousand prick's".

    Insted of talking linux or open source just note the fact they decided to go with a product that suits the enviroment. Rather than changing the enviroment to suit the product.
    M$Word may be a good product but who needs to change thousands of computers to write a memo.

    The IIs article says Micro$oft will notify all it's newsletter subscribers. But the patch was made available this Monday. But it only works if you use it. Is microsoft saying you must check the patch pages everyday now. I'd better stop before i GO INTO M$ rant mode.

    did they ask of the new servers you bought were they completely new(expansion) or replacements for old servers. If your old Linux server is working and that MS box running exchange needs replacing you will see better numbers for MS.
    After all how many times has it been pointed out you don't need to buy new hardware to get Linux to meet your needs.

    At least with the Apche.org hack it took the work of somebody who was past the point of script kiddie. And it says nothing bad about the product Apache it self. Only that with large numbers of people and a little trust something bad will happen once and a while.

    At what point will Micro$soft actually give me a reason to buy XP. It use to be games but consoles are now faster, cheaper and hackable. The office2k cover's 90% of what I need and that last 10% is covered by specialized tools.
    I find myself using *nix more and more for my work and day to day task's. BillBorg are you going to give me a reason to buy your product?

    But most economists will probably ask how the numbers were arrived at. Numbers ment for accountants are usaully accurate, while numbers for press release are usually finessed a little.
    One only needs to watch any of the market watch shows to see this.

    After years of growth they complain when sales growth is not as large as the year before. The record companies need to relize at some point the twelve year girls can only by so many pop albums and angry teenage boys get bored of the same rap/rock sound.

    Growth and increasing profits are not a right. A free economy raises and falls. Maybe all those MBA's should take take first year economics over again.

    We already have a situation where cars have computers in them that record information before you crash. Now imagine the insurance company demanding you have that GPS system you like installed.
    You parked in a bad neibourhood that voids you contract. Whoops you were going 3 miles over th limit contract voided. And so and so on.
    Or better yet the government contracts out work to a private company whose duty of care is not as rigid as the governments. Don't belive me look at prison'.
    Unless I can be reasonably in control of handing out my private information, I want it kept with me at all times.

    "A Family PC (www.familypc.com) online poll of 615 families conducted by Digital Research, an independent research firm, found that 68 percent of the parents who responded believe that computer usage has helped their children to become smarter."

    How many parents don't want admit they just bought what was really an expeensive toy to play games and chat with. Many parents seem to think because the child is more proficient with the computer than they are this equals intelligence.
    This article seems to suggest that we have entered some new age in education. And you better have a computer or you will be left behind.
    But hey if you want your child to have good software rather than a good teacher or mentor power to ya. So the next time I see a kid unable to figure sales tax for ten dollars on the cuff I'll tell then to get a faster computer so they will be smarter.

    We need Micorsoft to hear this and leave Linux alone. Linux will make it to the desktop eventually but it will take the same route it always has, from the ground up. Appealing to the fickle average consumer is an expensive game that is usaully won with money. Most people have noticed that Linux and open source is growing every where but the desktop.
    Let's wait untill all that is left is the desktop. Won't it be nice when people ask is my desktop compatible with(insert device her) rather than the other way around. Then we will have won.

    From the news reports it seems Micr$oft will lose about $125 per unit. But they are expecting to sell two billion dollars worth of product in two years. In a market worth over six billion a year.
    So hopefully they will fail and we can hack them and have some sweet and cheap little workstations.

    In the Russia it used they used to arrest people and tell them you have no right to see the law your being arrested for.And if you asked to see the laws it was considered a subversive act that you could be arrested for.
    When you consider requests under freedom of information acts are often considered suspicious and anything under the sun can literally be given a copyright or patent. You have to wonder who won the cold war.
    But communisim will never win, governments still prefer greed.

    The article does point out one thing that seems to get lost in the computer world. Better to use a tool that does what you need than to use a tool that does what you want. Most want easy to use, but how often have we learned good enough isn't.

    Telephone fraud is very commen, yet the phone companies still keep installing large numbers of phones in very starnge places. Newspapers still allow ad's like make thousands stuffing envelopes, when it's been proven over and over that it's a scam.
    But I guess the only real difference is phone and newspapers are owned by the same people who own the record labels and studios.

    They claim 1 million a day at 7.5c a download, well thats over 13 million downloads a day or 390 million a month. Wow the RIAA missed that many alleged thefts? Add to that the large cell phone companies sell ringtone change a feature but nobody seems to be going after them for enabling the "piracy" like Napster. Looks more like a lawsuit troll than anything else.
