It should be pointed out that the Ukranian President (Kuchma) said the outrage in his parliment was rediculous and that if it were the other way around the Ukranians would do the same thing. He sided with the U.S. and said his own congress had not a leg to stand on. The U.S. isn't evil.

  5. Re:globalization on Ukraine Tries to Avoid U.S. Trade Restrictions · · Score: 2

If the sanctions are as bad as you say, then why would a rational country not do something about the problem?

Russia has made is much harder to be a pirate in recent years. The Ukranians speak with fear about the situation there. (I was just in Kiev a few days ago so I know of what I speak.) The problem is, like it or not, you can't have free trade with piracy. Criminal activity is something that cannot be tolerated.

The things the Ukranians need to do are not burdensom. The problem is the government is run by corrupt leaders (some who may be involved in murder, for example). This is another reason not to give them handout money. It is time the U.S. stopped supporting the bad guys - it only encourages more international lawlessness. The Ukranian government can stop this piracy easily. Sure they will not get it all and some of it will go underground. The US has underground piracy rings too.

What the corporations need to do to combat this is control their prices. For example if a package costs $3000US they must expect to sell it for $300US in poorer countries like Ukraine. In fact it should be part of the trade agreement. Otherwise you put the software out of the reach of the Ukranians and they are then forced to resort to piracy.

  6. Report from Kiev on Ukraine Tries to Avoid U.S. Trade Restrictions · · Score: 2

I was just in Kiev for the past two weeks. Intellectual Property as a concept is non-existant in Ukraine. The bazars are filled with every imaginable piece of software on CD-ROM at the stunningly low price of 10 grivnas (about $1.80US) for everything. A CD my have Lightwave, 3D-Studio Max and other software or it might just have one piece. Either way it costs the same.

I bought "The Lord of the Rings" on VHS for my brother as a gag gift. It is in PAL and also in Russian so he can't play it and if he did he couldn't understand it. I did watch it while I was there and the translation was horrible. The title was translated as "Owner of the Ring"! and the translator not only translated the dialog, he gave commentary!!!

Ukraine was receiving $82 million a year in aid. Because of their very backward stance on Intellectual Property (sorry Stallman fans, IP is an important cornerstone to any advanced socieity) and also because of terrible corruption in the government (they suppress the free press by threatening the printing pressesses and by assasinating some journalists among other evils) it has been lowered to just $52 million a year. A big jump. However there is no reason why, as a US citizen, my tax dollars should go to Ukranians. I think if their government was more responsible I would be very glad to see some of my money flow into it.

The situation in Ukraine is a good one. They are getting their economy back on track -- they just need to come into the 21st century with respect for IP and the government needs to be more responsible. I loved the people there and I liked Kiev a lot. The worst thing I can say about it is that the water is totally tainted with giardia (I witnessed this first hand unfortunately).

P.S. : Don't try and smuggle back CD's or VHS tapes like I did. I found out you risk imprisonment and fines that are outrageous.

  7. One needs to mention "Armor" by John Steakley on The Forever War · · Score: 3, Insightful

There is a triumvarate of good Power Armor books.

    Starship Troopers,
    The Forever War and
    Armor

Starship Troopers is the facist, macho view point. The enemy consists of skinnies and nasty bugs. The army way is the right way and cowards are not well recieved.

The Forever War is the idealistic, peacnik view. The situation is always fubar, authority figures suck and the book explores many interesting socialogical situations such as men and women in the army together, gay life, and a world where only nice people are cloned.

Armor - this book avoids the whole good and bad issue because the main character is essencially insane. The situation is always FUBAR. Authority figures run the range of good to incompetent but it doesn't matter because the "Ants" manage to screw up every plan Earth has for them. There is a very cool and interesting and totally out of place middle story that doesn't involve the main character.

I don't just recommend all three books. I think anyone who reads one has to read the other two. I liked them all for their merits but opinions vary and you are bound to hate at least one of these books.

Gibson however knows no bounds when making that custom fit guitar for your Country-Metal-Christian sound.

If it wasn't on a flight that went nose down then the only thing I can think of is Fork Lift damage, or perhaps your boxes were used to support the cargo container for say a FREIGHT TRAIN or Bill Gates' equivilent of wealth in gold bulion.

I suppose next time you could pack the thing with some more of those styrofoam peanuts. I know they are a damn nuisance, especially with static electricity and all, but they could have saved your computer... or not.

I lived in Boston in the 80's (college years) and 90's (working years) when you were there at New England Comics. I don't think I ever met you but I always thought it was cool that you were from the same area. I've enjoyed The Tick immensely. Another favorite of mine was Megaton Man. The humor in both books had many differences and some similarities. Both Characters were principly big and blue and idiot/savants. Both made outrageous speaches. Megaton Man made more hay out of Political Humor while The Tick seemed to be more pointed at mocking comic books in general. However on many occations even Megaton Man was clearly focused on mocking superheros. For example Mellow Yellow was clearly a mockery of The Green Lantern.

My question is this: what was it about the timeperiod when you conceived and developed The Tick that made for the similarities between Megaton Man and The Tick in both their look and the humor? What was it about the comic book industry at the time that both you and Don Simpson picked up on?

Are these the best arguments the enemies of globalization can come up with?

    Very sad.

The problem isn't globalization -- you give all the reasons why it is obvious the problem is bad local government (e.x. Taliban) and why these people must be put out of power. I don't have much hope that once the Taliban is out of power that the next government will be able to do any good for the people of Afganistan but I do have some hope. Perhaps the next government will take the millions of dollars in aid that the U.S. gives Afganistan and actually uses it to improve the lives of the common Afgan.

My hope is that someday Afganistan can stand on it's own without the need for aid and can participate in the world in a positive manner.
