I wonder how the system would handle animals on the road. I don't know exactly how many animals I've hit since I've been driving, but I'd bet it's been dozens. 3 deer, all on the highway, some raccoon, some squirrels, some opossum. I was in a situation where I literally had to choose between swerving and wrecking in to the cars beside me on the freeway or hitting the deer. Needless to say, if its an animal, it's game. But, OTOH, computers are faster than humans, and sometimes things happen so fast that you don't get time to think.

In the split second between imminent danger and reaction, the speed of your vehicle, it's trajectory, and where your likely to have impact...these are all things a computer can calculate nearly instantly. I am not saying Yay for driver-less cars, i'm merely saying that If your going to crash, and with so many variables associated with crashes, at least if it's computer controlled, your risk is calculated, instead of solely relying on random reactionary impulses.

There is always that scary feeling like you lost control. Humans like to give control up for mundane and repetitive tasks, However, this is literally putting your life in the hands of a machine.

I'm more in favor of safety warnings that get noticed by the computer and escalated to the driver. For example, if your switching lanes and a car is in your blind spot, and you put your signal on, the computer warns you there is a car there in the blind spot. That's awesome. Or if standards were in place cars would talk to each other in such a way that Jimmy's BMW could bug the shit of of him for being a dick and cutting me off and getting too close while doing it...that's awesome too.
Or if i'm getting on the freeway and my Jeep knows that the guy coming down the road is going too fast and chances are high that if I try to merge on, he'll hit me in the rear. Or, (and this one is great) if your trying to get out on a busy road, the system could let you know when it is truly safe to pull out on to the main road, based on the speeds of the oncoming cars.

There are all kinds of things a computer system can do to make us safer drivers, without outright taking full control of the situation.

Maybe they should hang neon-lit signs from the traffic cameras that say: "Smile, you're on camera!" Which, in my opinion would be a good idea.

Have you ever seen those lit-signs on interstates or roads that when you drive by them, they tell you how fast your driving? The one I drive by often on the interstate (which is under endless construction work), just tells you how fast your driving...it's there to help you keep your speed in check and it gives the driver a chance to obey the speed limit.

Now back to those surveillance cameras, I wouldn't mind them at all, so long it had a sign or something that told me they were there. as with your post about the police cars, you're exactly right. It's hard to miss a police car, and at least I know i'm being monitored. However with cameras monitoring you, you *don't* know they are there. Which is deceptive to me. If it isn't fesible to hang signs on the cameras, how about "anyone cought for the first time gets a warning"
At least you know where they are by the photo, and i'm sure if people knew they were there, they'd be very careful while driving around them. *shrugs*

What I hate the most is those damn traffic lights that sense how fast you're going as you approch the light. So if your going "too fast" (whatever speed that is) they'll flash from green to yellow and then red quicker then you can blink your eyes.

We have one in an intersection where i pass through coming home from work. On the nights that I work late, the roads are basically empty at that time.

So i'm coming down the road doing about 1-3mph under the speed limit, which is 35mph. I'm ~50 meters or so away from the intersection/light. It's red. Then it changes to green. Now by that time, I'm about 5-8 meters away from the light. Since it just turned green, I didn't slow down much because the light just turned and under normal circumstances I could have gone through the intersection without slowing down.

    BUT NO..

Since i was over a certian "speed limit" that was LOWER then the speed limit sign posted on the road, the light darts back to yellow and quickly to red. So being the kind of guy who likes to obey the law, I slide to a stop. Which puts myself in danger of crashing and increases the possibility of hurting myself and others. All because the local law enforcement thought it'd be profitable to trick you in to running a red light and then chase you down to serve you a ticket.

I can see your point 100%. This is probably the _one_ reason why people like you and me still use IE at all.

Web developers are given a choice, some code to standards some code for IE. But what about the USERS? If you code exclusively for IE then you take away the choice for the USER to use an alternative broswer exclusively. If you code to standards, (Mozilla/firefox/opera/safari) then you take away my choice to stop using IE for IE spacific webpages.

I don't see the problem in a plugin for IE Compatibility. at least then I can ditch IE all together and get to view the ENTIRE web with my favorite broswer (Mozilla). There would be no reason for me to use IE if this happened.

If alternative broswers take away the need to use IE entirely, then they give themselves the benifit of attracting more people. I think it would be in there best interests to do so.

Agreed. Nintendo had backwards-compatability down to a science with the Gameboy. Got a GBA game, Game Boy Color Game? *ANY* Gameboy game? You can play them on the Gameboy SP. This adds tremendous value to any console, especially at launch time when launch titles may not be all their cracked up to be. You'd think that since Microsoft is pushing to be the first out with a next-gen console, they would add backwards-compatability to the Xbox2. You wouldn't have to start over with all new games, you would just continue to add to your existing library of games you alraedy own. It's a neat idea IMHO.

The only reason to not add backwards-compatability that I can think of is that consumers would be forced to buy games along with their new console. I'd imagine their expecting larget profits at launch time because of this.

The controllers are way too big. While I don't necessarly have big hands, I do have long fingers.
I'm so used to smaller controllers. Notabily the NES, SNES, Gameboy, Sega Master System, Genesis, Game Gear, Neo-Geo Pocket, PS1 + PS2, hell even the Dreamcast controller isn't exactly small in size, but it's very contour and easy to hold.

I think the main reason for the architecture switch is to make it harder for people to make homebrew apps. (I'm no programmer but the x86 architecture i'd imagne is more familar to programmers than the PPC) This is speculation on my behalf though.

At any rate, i'm not about to under-estimate Microsoft. God knows they've made a ton of mistakes but somehow come out on top. I know many are waiting for MS to finally get it's rude awaking, but after all....

if 1,000 people didn't know about your company and the product your selling, then those 1000 people WILL NOT EVER buy anything from you. Now if 1000 people see your annoying ads, you got 1000 people who know who you are and what you're selling. The chances of getting a sales boost vastly increases once people know that you exist and have something to offer.

Not everyone is as loathing of advertisements. They CAN be a good thing when done right. If we didn't have advertisements how would we hear about new products coming out? How would we know if a product existed if there was no press releases (a form of advertising) or TV/radio/net commercials?

Now don't get me wrong, I hate ads just as badly as most /.'s. All the tools that are available to remove ads and popups *IS* a good thing. There's way too much "noise" on the net as it is.
