    With outsourcing, you aren't MOVING your workers. What outsourcing is is you hire an already existing company with indigenous employees to do the work for you.

    It sounds like there are plenty of deep misperceptions about the midwest. Believe it or not, there are sizable cities in the midwest? And that they don't necessarily have the same crime rates as some of the coastal cities? With decent costs of living?

    Why should Microsoft support a particular piece of Sony hardware built-into the OS disc?

    If you haven't noticed already, Sony and other hardware companies can provide their own drivers and software. I don't think it is right for Microsoft to get all of Sony's patents just for them to get the Microsoft OS installed on it.

    That said, I do believe they need to have better results on google, and don't agree with paying $3 for their archives that I can get at my local library for free.

    Your local library is not free. You or someone pays for it in their taxes. If you rent a house or apartment, it is possible that part of that cost goes to the local tax boards and redistributed to various things, one of them being a library. Some areas siphon off money from sales taxes. In the end, I bet you are paying a lot more than $3 for the ability to go to a library.

    It's not that I don't agree with libraries, I just don't want to see people ignorant of the true prices they pay that are hidden from them.

    Aren't you forgetting about the unabomber? What about the guys that bombed the fed building in OK? Those guys were white americans. So is every male going to be searched? I doubt that falls under inconveniencing as few people as possible.

    I doubt harrassing a minority (mid-east descent?) is going to earn any civil rights points.

    The age 12 thing is too high. There was a kid that was conned into bringing a teddybear with a gun inside it through security. Women have been found with guns and knives too. So much for profiling.

    If your solution is something taken out of 1984, I don't want to see it. I don't want a government that assumes guilt first. I agree with Ben Franklin, anyone that trades liberty for security will deserve neither and get neither.

    I don't want a government spending billions of dollars and stripping our rights and freedoms to "protect us" from terrorists when more people die each year from auto accidents than they do of terrorism. There's no point in allowing the goverment to rapidly expand its own powers and spending on what is really a small threat.

    None of the Radeon cards are HDTV capable.

    Wrong. I can back up what I say.

    There is one AIW that can capture ATSC, many if not all 9xxx series Radeons and higher can output 1080i.

    Why buy an HDTV with a VGA connector? It should have a DVI connector anyway, and if you want analog, use an adaptor to feed the analog pins of the DVI connector.

    I think all 9xxx series and newer Radeons have component out capabilities. No need to resort to S3 for an HTPC. The 9000, 9200 and I think several 9600 models are fanless too, making them better choices for home theater use. It does require an adaptor though, I think it is $20 to $30 direct from ATI.

    It's not that I don't welcome another challenger in the graphics arena, I still have a bad taste from their previous sad attempts to compete.

    I'm not sure what happened there. I might be tired, I guess.

    I'd say DL is worth it for movies as it doesn't require recompression or stripping extras to fit a movie onto a single layered disc. It would make a good short-term video backup such that one doesn't have to risk damaging their original disc. Of course, such a use is technically illegal in the US. This would be a boon for DVD authorers, for amateur and small video businesses too.

    I wouldn't trust it for a sole data backup because of a slightly higher error rate on the second layer.

    Also, dual-layer media is still very expensive. A DL disc costs much more than twice as much as a single-layer.

    That's not enough information to go on. $2 a blank? $5 a blank? If price is such an issue, you can wait. Single layer blanks used to cost a lot too.

    I'm pretty sure several people WILL switch and change their browsing habits after I charge them $100 to fix their computer.

    Too many people ignore warnings for preventible problems, but will more likely change once they see for themselves how much their poor choices and habits cost them.

    I've said several times here and on other boards that you have to teach people to not click "OK" and to be suspicious of all email attachments.

    Antivirus programs are generally a "stupid user tax", for $40 a year, many of them allow people to remain stupid rather than spend a millisecond of thought on whether you really should open that email or download software from questionable sources. It still won't protect them from 411 scams, but most of those fleeced probably deserved to be anyway. Too many people seem to believe or assume that there aren't people out to get them or their money.

    The arena is small and dimly lit, so there's no point in allowing running or ducking, otherwise there's the risk of tripping.

    Paintball requires a dedicated park of a pretty big size, meaning you have to drive out to nowhere to get to one.

    People rag on the Puritans, but Puritans were actually pretty liberal for the time. Apparently, they believed drinking beer in moderation was OK and that having sex (within marriage though) was healthy.

    The church of England of the time thought that sex was something like a necessary evil and should be avoided at all costs, even within marriage. I think they frowned on booze.

    In my experience, Windows is pretty stable. The few crashes I've ever gotten were due to faulty hardware or an old driver.

    What Windows doesn't have is security.

    Most other architectures in 64 bit mosw slows down code vs. 32 bit because of more addressing bits to load and store. The real kick is that AMD64 actually doubles the number of integer (and FP?) registers versus standard IA32.

    Even if you never get more than 1GB of RAM, those registers help, usually more than offset the penalty of loading, storing and saving larger addresses. In some cases, they apparently help a lot.

    I don't think it is about "clipping" the louder sounds as it is about compressing the overall sounds. Clipping and dynamic range compression are two things, both reduce sound quality, but I think DRC is better than clipping, at least for the safety of the speakers.

    I sure as heck cell phone makers release phone firmware allows blocking SMS completely, or if enabled, have a competely open "whitelist" of pre-approved senders.

    I haven't recieved any spam email or SMS on my Sprint phone, but I've heard there's no way to turn off SMS on some phones. Not sure how to verify that.

    Screw the bookmarks drop-down menu. I have several folders on the bookmarks toolbar, organized by type, in each folder is the most important dozen links, and sub folders organized by category. I have several hundred bookmarks available at two mouse clicks.

    I do agree that search would be a little more useful.

    Actually, about 1% seems about right. A lot of nuclear reactors appear to be capable of just below or at 1GW.

    There may be a point to it. The problem is the EU has been so staunchly against ABMs that I don't see how the policy makers would let this through if they thought this would be the case.

    I can imagine that if NASA was testing this, there would be an uproar because of such a theory.

    Being able to hit a 500m asteroid in a very well known and predictable orbit is not nearly the same as being able to hit a 5m wide rocket in a potentially unstable and unpredictable trajectory.

    In my opinion, AIDS is not a government problem.

    In many ways, AIDS is completely preventible and needs no government money. So many people are fully aware of the risks and yet continue to have unprotected sex and share needles. I don't see the point in spending government money to protect people from themselves.

    IIRC, auto accidents kill more people than AIDS does. I don't see the point in halting space research just because people are still willing to kill each other.

    I think the ESA had managed to make a probe orbit an asteroid, and even managed a soft landing or near-landing as well with the same probe. Granted, it was a larger asteroid, but I think that is about as difficult as hitting a 500m target, with the benefit of carefully calculated course corrections.

    That is nice, but how do they track this? The stats for my web site showed that 10% of visitors use some variant of Mozilla. And I don't run a linux site, or have any more than one page about Firefox.
