  1. Damn you, Katz on The Return Of The Luddites · · Score: 4
I vowed not to respond... but I have to. You haven't read Kurzwiel's Age of Spiritual Machines yet, have you? You really ought to.

Kurzwiel uses an excellent quote from a well-known manifesto to illustrate his main point: that technology enthusiasts (like us) are Luddites as well. Being a Luddite is not about fearing technology - it's fearing the application of technology. I, then, am a Luddite, along with Bill Joy.

These other people are, as you said, opportunists, and those who fear any organization of people. They fear communication among people. They don't fear the application of technology.

Indeed, the Luddites are returning, but in the guise of you and me - those who love technology but fear what people will do with it. I, for one, hate most of the 'net. It's a stinking pile of capatalist dung. Does that make me a Luddite? Yes. Do the people you named like the 'net as a stkinking pile of capatalist dung? Yes. They hate the aspects of the 'net that I like. They hate communication. That's not being a Luddite - just a power-hungry politician.

Jon, do yourself a favor, and pick up a copy of Kurzwiel's Age of Spiritual Machines. You won't regret it. Maybe you might even change your message to be a bit more positive.

$PROGRAM_NAME:$LICENSE_NAME:(Commercial|Shareware| Freeware|Semi-free|Free|Public-Domain):$ AUTHOR:$WEBSITE:$EMAIL Then hack something together with cpio to include it with your program.

  11. The Future of Web Apps on SCO Change Their Name to Tarantella · · Score: 3
Welcome to the future friends, where it's not how fast your computer is, but how fast your bandwidth is! I've got an OC3, how much do you have? Nevermind that it would be a heck of a lot cheaper to just by a goddamn computer than to rent this OC3-connected IA, but I've got the bandwidth. And with GLX, I can even play 3D games over the network as fast as my friend's P60 with an S3 Virge!

The long and short of it is that this is SCO's plan to destroy desktop computing - the desktop computing that kicked SCO's ass in the marketplace, and this is their revenge - by forcing us to rent OC3's to get our applications. With the help of Microsoft (.NET is just another name for the Tarentella idea), they will destroy the PC revolution out of fear of the Linux revolution. We must stop them!

On the contrary, I feel it's actually more dangerous to give these kids access to places like msn.com and aol.com than to accidentally allow a pr0n site through. What the pr0n site does is a temporary offense to the mind - but allowing such bastions of commercialism through like aol.com is a slow denegration of the soul. It only exposes previously rather unexposed children to the rampant buy-buy-buy culture that is the outside world, and makes yet another media convert - a person with no thought skills, who does what the media wants. Can pr0n do that to a person? No. Can aol.com? Most definitely. I conclude that the commercialism is much, much more dangerous to society and to these individuals.
