It's amazing how weak people get once they get paid a good salary for any length of time. Why don't you try going to a park and finding a homeless guy that sleeps on a bench and tell him how you can barely live with less than $100k a year.

You are either exaggerating, or you have no concept of what is really needed to live and what things are luxuries.

Thank you for the details. You can indeed hit a margin call without trading on margin. This can be avoided by having a larger balance in your account. For example, if you had a large enough balance that your account would have to drop by 50-75% to hit the minimum requirements you wouldn't have to worry about it (assumming you aren't buying companies that are dying). If a brokerage started liquidating positions on a volatility spike of that magnitude, they would not have much business left.

Excellent analysis. I have two minor nits to pick.

    • Second, from my experience a 100W replacement would be closer to 15W. Not a big difference. Of course I am going on power consumption of the regular bulb shape replacements. Spotlights might be more efficient in LEDs. This would still just be $7 in your example, still giving the LED a massive advantage.

I replaced all the bulbs in my house with LEDs about 3 years ago. I did the calculations and found that the payback point with my light usage in my house would be around 3 years. That point has passed and all the LEDs are still working. I am now in the point where I'm not buying more LEDs, but I'm enjoying the lower electric consumption.
