I am sick of carrying around the 700+ CD's I own everytime I move. I can take all of my CD's music and iTunes Music Store purchases with me wherever I go; either on my iPod or my laptop. My CD's weigh about 100 lbs. My iPod, much less. Also, most of my old CD's are badly scratched.
How about a class action suit where all iPod owners sue Doug Morris and Universal Music for slander? My iPod is not one of the "repositories for stolen music". What he said is slander.
The evidence might SEEM more convincing to people. However, evidence is not fact. Evidence can be right or wrong.
Someone's personal experience for one summer has no value when trying to establish the facts about the earth's climate.
We can be sure that is has been hotter and colder than today, and that it will continue to be hotter and colder than today.
All you claim is that it is scary. Rational thought can then fall away and leave us that much further from the truth.
If you want to understand the climate, get a group of unbiased rational thinkers who have no stake in the conclusions to be reached (good luck with that!) , and let them spend an entire lifetime trying to understand the climate. They will be either really smart or lucky to come close to understanding how a system as complex as our solar system effects the earth's climate - Man's contributions to climate change included.
I am aghast at the some of the remarks to this news.
First of all, Steve is a father to several children and is sick with a serious illness. This alone should cause you to some show sort of decency in your remarks.
I have a nephew who is fighting Leukemia. When you visit someone you know or who is a member of your family with cancer, it is hardly funny.
The Slashdot community may not respect Steve Jobs for what he did for modern computing. That is their ignorance. I just cannot understand the callousness of some people who poke fun other's tragedies.
I wish S.J. a speedy recovery, foremost for his family. I do not know him, but I know the result of his imagination. We should all strive to have that impact on the world.
The idea that evolution has anything to do with an equilibrium is absurd. Evolution happens when DNA is damaged. By whatever source. Most defects are bad. Very few are good. Evolution is a stable good defect. It is that simple.
All of this happens in an environment that is radically changing (both in short and and geologic timeframes). Which is why DNA damage is good. It allows for change which allows for adaptation. But nothing really adapts. Adaptation is random changes persisting.
I do not think anyone is smart enough to make any worthwhile prediction about this precess.
I do not like smog and it shortens human (mainly mine) lifespan. Fuel cells are good. I do not want to drink or swin in polluted water. Waste mangement is good.
It always riles me when people enjoy all the benefits of our freedom loving western society whip out the pisser to whiz on, take your choice, our President, our Country, and especially our military. This infantile outlook consists of always plentiful complaints and no alternatives.
The west has enemies. Some of these enemies would think nothing of mass murder. Zealots like Osama and Yasser and the latest Islamofascist leader of Iran are pretty good at sending their underlings to die for their cause. You need to put these creeps at risk. They only understand raw power.
It is instructive to note that most of the wars the west has been drawn into result from our display of weakness or lack of resolve. The Cold War never became hot because we were willing to destroy an enemy that attacks our homeland and our stategic security. This latest nuke document is a refreshing and timely sign that we will kick the crap out of any state that tries to harm us. And please spare me the anti-west/US crap. We do not oppress anybody. Everybody in the world seems to be dying to come here. Even the Islamic terrorists who are trying to destroy us. The west allows them the freedom to practice their unholy version of Islam.
It is instructive to see how remarks on this topic are rated. I would love to know how many people on slashdot have done ANYTHING in the way of military service to help protect their own country. The former B52 pilot gets a big thanks from me. Without people like him, we wouldn't have the life we have now. No internet. And certainly no slashdot.
The vast majority of applications written for client- based computing are not commercial appplications. Sure, Word or Photoshop would be better as a C/C++ application. The point is is that most applications are custom applications that need to be written to satisfy a particular business need rather than a general market space. Time to market is far more important than spectacular performance. Your C++/MFC app would have a time-to-market issue compared with my Java/Swing app.
Java is a fine environment for running applications if you are running a well written application. JBuilder is a prime example of a large complex application. And it runs on most platforms.
You seem fond of Windows technology - to each his own. Enjoy the embrace of Mr. Bill. I would rather be outside of the pack.
You are incorrect. I am a consultant to a large genomics company. This company has used Java and Swing for some rather large, complex applications that are being used in the most visible way possible. The apps are both for raw data collection and very complex data analysis.
Using Java made it possible to develop these applications in a relatively short period of time. Java is very forgiving compared to C++. Development times are probably at least half of what they would have been if we had gone down the C++/MFC route.
In additions, Java provide a natural path to make your standalone client apps into integrated enterprise apps.
Java and particularly Swing are not perfect, but they are much better application level development tools than C++/MFC. And they are kinda sorta portable.
Java is only irrelevant if YOU choose another development platform.
I disagree. Their marketing team is a little hamstringed right now because of the economic downturn. It is expensive to get on TV and radio. Computer sales are down and Apple likes to make a little money each quarter. So they cut expenses.
Apple will make a push to capture marketshare when people start buying more computers. Hopefully the stars will align with the coming of the G5!
I completely agree. My main connectivity is a AT&T cable connection which seems to work well. I also have a DSL connection for my servers and as a backup. It is certainly more expensive, but dialup is too slow for a backup in my situation.
Also, since I moved from San Francisco to Boulder, all of my expenses have been cut in half (not to mention my driving time, wich has been cut by 90%). The cost of living difference easily pays for the extra cost of backup connectivity.
Ummm, I am pretty sure that both the US and Canada cannot just change their minds about giving out these work permits. Is is part of the NAFTA agreements. Also, I can never stand the nativist sentiment about trying to keep workers from working in one another's countries, especially countries like Canada and the US. This sort of cultural exchange is very good for both countries. The US has always been (relative to the rest of the world) very liberal about letting in foreign workers. This has certainly been to the benefit of the US economy.

Photoshop for OS X
·
· Score: 3, Informative
This is just my guess as a long time Mac developer. It is likely that Photoshop contained lots of 68k assembly code that had to be rewritten for PPC. Photoshop was written back when you had to squeeze every bit of processing power out of the Mac. While this could work on Mac OS 9 and earlier (Mac OS 9 has a great 68k emulator), this needed to be changed for OS X.
You are wrong about the APIs. The vast majority of APIs still exist in Carbon. It is true there are preferred APIs (e.g Event Handling) that are new. The old APIs are at least 80% intact and native to OS X. This is the whole purpose to Carbon.
Adopting the new event model and porting 68k assembly code would have taken some time in an application as complex as Photoshop.
What is going to have a more significant effect on the environment:
a.) Man
b.) The next eruption of a super volcano
c.) A collision of a large space object (asteriod or comet)
d.) The natual variation in the output of the sun.
Most people who claim to be green would cite "a" as the greatest threat to our existance and/or quality of life.
On the ther hand, if "b" happened, let's say in Yellowstone (there's one there you know), North America would be history and the world's environment would be drastically altered to the point of a near extinction event. This, they say happens every 500,000 years or so and it seems we are due for one soon. That is soon in geological terms.
If "c" happens, all the nuclear weapons on the planet set off at once would seem like a tiny firecracker comparred to the devastation thet would ensue. This could easily happen over the next 100 years.
"d" happens all the time and could heat or cool out planet to an extent that man could not approach.
Wow. "a" doesn't sound so bad. While it's not very cool to pump obviously toxic materials into the environment, CO2 is probably pretty harmless in comparative terms to b,c or d. As a matter of fact, some scientiists think that there were times that the CO2 concentration on the planet was much higher than it is now, and we still managed to survive till now. Jeez, life has even survived b,c and d!
I was taught this in high school in the 1970s.
Now this is news: http://www.dailytech.com/Temperature+Monitors+Report+Worldwide+Global+Cooling/article10866.htm !!!!

Ican throw my 42" Sony Wega LCD projection TV futher than you can throw your HDTV CTR monitor (I doubt it is 42").
I may have paid more and get somewhat less quality, but I am certain I will pay less in back surgery when I move my TV.

All of this fear mongering is tiresome.
If you could get 20% of the buying public to swear off buying CDs for one month, I would bet you would see a swift about face in the music industry.
We have the economic weapon. Let's use it!
I am in the process of reading it. Vey well written, but very densly packed with information. The kind of thing that true believers hate.
