Dilbert: I'm inventing a new technology to prevent kids from seeing smut on the internet. Dogbert: So, you're pitting your intelligence against the collective sex drive of all the teenagers who own computers? Dilbert: What is your point? Dogbert: Did you know that if you put a little hat on a snowball it can last a long time in hell?
Dilbert: Matt [a kid], your job is to text my new invention that blocks kids from seeing dirty pictures on the internet. Dilbert turns to Alice: His youthful curiosity is no match for my technical brilliance. Dilbert: I hope that wasn't the sound of eyeballs getting really big
I hear you. I used to live in upstate NY. Every clear night there it was. Most magnificent sight there is on this planet. It caused me to buy a 6" cadiotropic telescope.
Aurora Borealis once in a while too.
Now I live in NJ. I lost:
- Milky Way - Aurora - 140 inches of snow per year
Yes you did. Especially when you started out with the talking point that at some time in the past the majority of people believed in ideas that are generally considered to be false, and then sprinkled your comments with conspiracy theories and claims that things like global warming were not happening.
I've seen the one on flat Earth stated as "once all scientists believed the earth was flat". Well poppycock of course. One of the first results of analytic thinking led to the proof that the Earth is round. Long before the philosophical underpinnings of what we call science today were developed.
This shows such profound problems with your thought process and understanding of history and the evolution of philosophy that I was horrified.
> I am just saying that I have not seen compelling, non-biased evidence that man-induced, or anthropogenic if you like big words, causes are the reason for this current warming trend.
Well, you also claimed data for global warming was unclear. That is just not so.
Compelling unbiased evidence for AGW is published in science journals on a frequent basis. Do you have a subscription to Science or Nature? If not try going to a library.
> Are you saying left wing media controls the polls or are you saying that is what Republicans think?
I am saying that polls were biased was a common theory among Republicans, used to deny reality. There were even polls on the topic showing 7 out of 10 Republicans believed this. Members of the Tea Party gave this response some 94% of the time.
It is exactly the sort of thinking that leads to the theory that climate scientists are biased, which is used to deny reality.
Yeah, Mesopotamian creation myths showed a flat Earth. So what? They were operating with a very different belief system than modern empiricism, or even post Pythagorean logic. Is that what you want to make decisions with? Divine inspiration from Enki?
That's the only way you are going to get to the idea of a flat Earth.
FACT: Anyone who can do basic geometry can prove the Earth is not flat. Pythagoras knew it 2500 years ago.
Likewise with global warming. It's a FACT that the Earth is getting warmer. Sea levels all over the world are going up. There is no possible explanation for it other than the average temperature is increasing unless you believe some magic sky daddy is creating water to trick us.
Now the data for anthropogenic global warming is slightly less compelling, but none the less it is compelling. If you don't want to accept it, fine. But I betcha that you are going to look like a complete boob some time in the future.
Sorry, but conspiracy theories are complete horseshit. It's EXACTLY the same logical fallacy that led Republicans to believe they were going to win the election (left wing media controls the polls and they are manipulating the results).
Let me guess. You thought Romney was going to win, didn't you?
The internet is fundamentally a best effort statistically switched packet network. No delivery guarantees. No particular order of delivery.
Video uses temporal compression and requires timely delivery for a stable reconstruction of the video. Drop a master frame and all hell breaks loose. At a low level this is incompatible with the design of the internet.
Throw in the fact that people are conditioned to a highly reliable delivery system (cable TV) with dedicated bandwidth and you are simply going to find that they are not going to tolerate the performance profile you are going to get trying to cram a high bandwidth stream down a statistically switched pipe.
I'm sorry but this is distorting the statistics and neglecting problems with the vehicle fleet that cause fatalities at ALL intersections, whether or not there are stop lights present.
According to the FHWA red light running accounted for less than 10% of deaths at intersections in 2008. And this number is roughly 2% of the total traffic deaths in the US.
The primary way to make stop lights safer is to increase the yellow time and have a period where all the lights are red. But this ISN'T done with most red light camera installations because it reduces revenues to the point where the red light camera revenues don't pay for the operation of the cameras.
In NJ there have been several cases where red light cameras have been found to be operating at traffic signals with yellow light periods shorter than the basic requirements. There was recently a state-wide shutdown of red light cameras because of this problem.
Yes, thanks for this skepticism. In general the statement "x" is not produced naturally is false. Nature is surprisingly diverse and creative. For example one often sees statements like "dioxins don't occur in nature, or free chlorine doesn't occur in nature, or there is no natural equivalent to HFCS. These are false.
In reality what is important is the quantity of the materials, where they occur and what the environmental and health impacts are.
In the case of CFCs while there is evidence that there is some natural production (again the claim they don't naturally occur is wrong) the amounts on Earth are very small.
However the fact is other planets may have different proportions, so the presence of CFCs is not necessarily a sure indicator of civilization without knowing more about the planet.

It's pretty well established that the tornadoes were not statistically unusual so any claims that they are the result of global warming are hogwash.
As far as Sandy goes, there are several factors in action; increased development along the coast, an unusual confluence of spring tides and the storm surge, and sea levels and ocean temperatures that have increased due to global warming. It is reasonable to assign some of the damage that occurred due to the increased sea levels and temperatures but the rest, nope.
Sandy does provide an excellent example of what happens with stupid development policies, something that is a huge problem. With decent policies the damage could have been a lot less.
Knowing the sort of social structure that exists in these organizations I would not be surprised if there was a pooling of funds and award of bounties from the pool for each shiny pigeon that was bagged.
Maybe a trophy too.
I think it might be more fun than shooting the pigeons.

Oh I agree you completely. This money is being wasted in a bipartisan way.

The problem is more fundamental.
The internet is fundamentally a best effort statistically switched packet network. No delivery guarantees. No particular order of delivery.
Video uses temporal compression and requires timely delivery for a stable reconstruction of the video. Drop a master frame and all hell breaks loose. At a low level this is incompatible with the design of the internet.

http://brick.patch.com/articles/red-light-cams-shut-down-over-yellow-light-length-concerns
Then of course there is the history of municipalities intentionally shortening yellow light periods for profit:
http://blog.motorists.org/6-cities-that-were-caught-shortening-yellow-light-times-for-profit/
So we save $50,000 per year for each camera.
The same cameras cost about $2000 per day to operate.
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/council-votes-out-these-red-light-traffic-cameras-after-2-years-but-why/
Sorry but a program that costs 14 times more to operate than it saves is not effective and needs to be discontinued.

I remember an electronic typewriter (IBM?) that had built in magnetic storage. It was a late variation of the old Selectrics.
For $500 they had an option that was described as giving you unlimited storage.
Sounds worthwhile, no?
It turned out the standard magnetic storage was a floppy drive with a captive disk.
The $500 option bought you a new plastic faceplate that gave you access to the drive so you could change the floppy.
