I was very pleased to see that this video card won Video Card of the Year. As of late it's been seriously underated, even after sites like Anandtech declared it the best card for Athlon systems.
Also, Matrox was kind enough to release specs for their G200 (and G400? I think they're very similar in driver writing). This basically makes it the only 32-bit color viable card for Linux gamers.
It's a no-lose issue for politicians. In the race to see who can come out more in favor of children, facts get left by the side of the road
With all due respect - Jon, this is exactly the tactic used by almost every liberal/democrat seeking popularity. This one situation is so insignificant compared to all the times I've seen this done by liberals.
It's always "save the children" with them. Hey, let's save the children by giving them a better education! A nice idea, but all that means is dumping a ton of money into education where it's doing no good (more money for schools != smarter kids). It's all a ploy, just as you pointed out with McCain how he wants children to be protected at the library. The key difference is, the Liberals are doing this all the time, and at much higher degrees.
Well, I don't think it's that they don't have a sense of humor.
Do you know the author or have you been following the project for awhile? Lots of times when someone you don't know makes "jokes" it looks foolish -- this is especially true for something like a realtime video editing project. I guess when you think of something like that, you're expecting a web page that's a little more professional, that's all. So, I can't blame people for thinking it's a hoax.

As I understand it (IANA NASA guy), there is a mandatory technology freeze approximately 5 years before launch. Every component must go through rigorous tests, and this is the only thing holding them back really.
So the Linux version costs more than the Windows one? Ouch! I'll still get the Linux one to support it, but why would most people buy the Linux box if the Windows is cheaper (and they know they'll be able to download the bins to run under Linux)?
Will this likely ever show up at Best Buy? I'll be very dissapointed if it doesn't. For Christmas I'm getting a $500 gift certificate for there and I was looking forward to getting Q3/Linux.
If retailers like Best Buy don't carry Q3/Linux, then I think id is going to be a tad dissapointed with the number of Linux purchases.... there's just too many factors going against it. Thank god for Loki to offer it online early.
The target for this artical is for windows users who tried out linux and want to swtich back. it's obvoisly not FUD or any anti-linux campaining.
How can you be sure of this?? I'd say quite the opposite is much more plausible, due to the unlikely nature of the article. Several people have already pointed out how useless this is. You can't assume it's just "support" because the MS site says it is.
It's possible that they're not putting this here to provide "support", but instead are putting it there to give the illusion that it's a common issue for Linux users to want to delete it and install Windows.
That seems really strange to me, but interesting nonetheless... I guess my argument to that would be that there are always going to be evil people and there's nothing you can do about it.
One thing that surprised me most about the interview was what he said about security and how he doesn't like it. Did I interpret this correctly? Does he really think everything should be open? Maybe I'm missing something..
Is there anyone more familiar with his position who would like to fill me (and others) in?
Anandtech recently conducted a test to evaluate the performance tradeoffs of a higher clock rate and L2 cache speed.
He concluded that while the reduced L2 cache speed DOES affect some things, clock rate is way more important. This suprised me, the L2 cache speed reduction affected it very minimally.
The 750MHz AMD Athlon processor is the first processor that is built using AMD's aluminum 0.18-micron manufacturing process, and new AMD Athlon processors are now being built using that advanced technology. The 0.18-micron manufacturing process shrinks the size of the AMD Athlon processor die, enabling faster processor speeds and lowering power consumption.
So, yeah, starting now.. everything >750 from AMD is.18 micron.

It's more like this:
Slashdot announces news and important software releases.
Freshmeat announces software releases and important news.
Troll? Hahaha.. No offense, to the moderator who did that. But, who, exactly, is he trolling against or offending?
"Y2k is nothing but vaporware???? is not!!!! screw you!"
or perhaps y2k is a user/person on slashdot and felt offended.
or not... damnit.
oh yes, i made it!
Hey, Jesse Berst.. I think I've come on to something that may spark your interest - get you in on the ground floor of something.
.. sliced bread!
I agree. It does satisfy me to see his stories submitted on Slashdot and then torn to pieces, though.
I don't think anyone takes him (or ZDNet) seriously anymore, except people like my dad who just don't know.

Yeah, we have a loooong way to go.
You could always disable the taskbar.
Also, a new feature was added not too long ago that automatically disabled all the extra crap (taskbar) when GNOME was detected.

Thanks for the response.

In all seriousness, it's better us than "them". Just be happy you're at the top of the food chain (assuming we are) :)
Ahh... I should've realized that someone posting about it would've read the article anyways. But in any case, others may not have known.
But, I agree about the PC200 RAM... it's too bad it seems so far off yet. It could make Rambus look even less ideal right now.
SlotA has a K7 motherboard list that tells you this. I think the first dual Athlon boards will appear in January or February.

I think you are confusing the Athlon with the P3/Coppermine. Until today, the fastest "real" K7 available was in 700mhz. The fastest P3 was 733mhz.
