Hey, let's get something straight, Hydrogen is not a "source" of energy, it is a way of storing energy from another source. What will that other source be? Oil? Coal? Nuclear? All these blockbuster articles about "energy from water", don't quite seem to get the main point....
I live in Israel, I had just returned from a trip to America (where I used my GMS phone) and sent a message to my wife. "On the Bus." The message never arrived. A year later I went to America again and after opening my phone saw that there was a message waiting for me. "On the Bus". Those who know how the GMS server technology works will probably have an idea of how this could have happened...
It sounds like occams razer would hack this one to death. Unless there is an a-priori reson for believing memory before 3 is unlikely it's a lot simpler to just figure that people remember than to take a convoluted explanation that lacks any evidence.
Along the same lines, does anybody have a list of Tablet PC's which can run Linux? That is, not just theoretically, but which someone has already done the work and published the methodology?
I have a similar problem. I'm the lead architect for an industrial computer-vision system for a company large enough that we haven't been able to choose a single environment. As a result our system has to compile and run with Windows XP, Linux and Solaris. The first thing is to create a build system that can simplify the build process. This we did using GNU make on Cygwin. For those that like the Visual development tools, we have a make option that generates dsp and dsw files for Visual. We also have a cross platform i/o threading library that gives a common interface fro the application, that hurts a bit, Windows is clearly the LCD, although it does have some performance perks in certain cases. But what really hurts is the lack of ansi c++ capability in visual. My solution? I'm waiting for the ansi compatible version of the intel compiler to come out in the 1st quarter of 2003 and then we'll use it on both Linux and Windows. We'll jettison the use of the Solaris native compiler and use GNU g++ instead. That should solve the worst of our problems. There is also a large, growing and amazingly successful (at least in terms of convincing the suits) movement to just go with Linux here. That's all I can suggest for now.
If re-use of design patterns is an IP violation, I would have to get electro-shock therapy every time I changed jobs! Copyright applies ONLY to written code. Patents can apply to processes, but you have be violating a specific registered patent. Trade secrets are much more vague. If design patterns fall within a legal scope at all, it would have to be here.
Well.... I'm living in a country thats hurting a lot more than the US from the tech sector bust and I'm still getting calls from people interested in my DSP skills. I'm currently working in a new area I call "Embedded Distributed Computing" which I think is going to get real hot, real soon.
I couldn't agree more. I've checked out a few C++ "meta-compilers", but they're nothing like having the facilities built in. The essence of the problem is to have a language that cleary distinguishes static from dynamic decision making. I find that this distinction takes up an enourmous amount of my design time on any given project and it should be reflected in the tools available in the language.
You're wrong. Wagner was Hitler's original inspiriation. It was after seeing the Ring cycle for the first time that he had the vision of Germany's future which led him into politics. Wagner was "the composer" for Hitler. The Nazi's based their entire mythos on his opera's. You are correct that he was not a Nazi and for all we know he would have been horrified by what Nazism became. But he was an outspoken political leader of the anti-semitic fascist camp in Germany.
Excellent comment re:Wagner. "multi-media" IS tranditional are in every culture. Are culture perhaps "re-discovered" this integration with opera. What people mean by "multi-media" is usually "interactive mulit-media" which is a new genre enabled by computer technology.
Well, one of goals of Wagners "multi-media" was to encourage in society what later came to be called "National Socialism", better known as Nazism. I find it rather odd to call basic traditional "art" which throughout history has always been "multimedia", at least until the modern era divided dance, theatre and music into seperate specialties, as inherintly democratic. It serves the purposes of the societies that create it. Very rarely, in history at least, democratic ones.
Is there a place on the web for start-up horror stories? I've started writing up mine which is the worst one I've ever heard. Complete with spies, assasins and military officers with briefcases full of cash. Enough time has passed I think I can publish it without danger of recrimination. Where should I put it?
I'd say its pretty naive to think the whole thing is about saying "sorry". It's probably also naive to consider it an accidents. Was it an accident that the US was spying on China? Maybe it also wasn't an accident that a Chinese plane got downed? It's certainly not an accident that 24 airman are being kept and possibley tortured for information.
Yeah, soon with missele defenses there'll be no way to really screw up the earth, I'm glad they're working on this one. Woudldn't it be funny if a bug in the nth bit of a floating point calculation on a PC ended all life on earth?
It's far from clear that a cloned Einstein would also be a genius. It's also far from clear that the military has the legal and physical capability to raise children and brainwash them into slaves, I don't know of any case of this since the Mamalukes.
I don't think you understand what cloning is, it's not "instant humans". Clones are born from wombs and raised like anybody else. If the military wanted "disposable people" they could have baby farms and send the slaves out to their death, all with current technology, cloning gives them no advantage.
I once saw a software development house, recieve a large amount of money from a start-up to "pretend" they had a product in development. They lied about the state of the product, the number of people working on it, the physical space they were working in and the stage of development (zero). They did this in front of a group of investers in order to fool them into investing money in the start-up. Professional ethics? Good Idea.
First of all, throw out the sci-fi, a clone is NOT the same person, more like a twin. Thus the biggest problem is not in onesey's and twosey's it's in mass cloning which would lead to a dramatic reduction in genetit diversity. It also would enhance genetic weaknesses (when the clones breed) similar to massive inbreeding. What I really don't understand is what it's USEFUL for?
Hey, I'm sick of hearing everybody complain about the mouse buttons. Go out and buy yourself an n-button mouse, they make them for the Mac!!!! Install the drivers and tell the control panel what you want the bloody buttons to do. This works great on Mac-OS, I haven't tried it yet under PPCLinxux, maybe it's mouse drivers are cripppled?
Hey, You know how he did it? Microwaves. It's well known and it's not safe. (Marconi fried himself slowly to death this way). There was a modern power solution to collect solar energy via satellite and beam it to earth with a narrow microwave beam that everybody could avoid. This would only work with some new kind of microwave laser technology, other wise you couldn't get it narrow enough.
Nicely said, feel free to write me off-line if you'd like. The Bible is very vague (deliberately so I feel) about after lifes and the words hell and heaven don't appear at all in the Old testament. (at least not in the Hebrew-Aramaic version I read)

Yeah, and I bet they got hundreds of resumes!

Are you kidding? I once got laid there!

good answer, I guess it could be useful.

TotalView is your answer. It's the only thing I've found that really works under multi-threaded multi=processor environments
