The DoJ is one of many departments these days that are run for the benefit of the of the administration, not to serve justice or even the American people.
...should have died in the pot-fueled dorm room bullsh*t session they were formed in. This is one of them. Like the article says, scientists are people too, and they may have finely honed their knowledge in their area of expertise, but beyond that, they know as much- or as little- as anyone else. It's also absurd to think that the selection of topics of study, or the lead 'scientists' in charge of an area of policy, won't be driven by considerations outside of strict evidence. They'll fabricate it to obtain the pre-determined outcome- because that's what they do today in highly charged fields of study.
Um, no. Unless your car is a complete shitbox to start with, or you drive ~100 miles per day every day, keeping it for 10-15 years will not cost you more than replacing it every six years. Depreciation is an accounting trick that only really works in aggregate. If your car is still running in six years time, keep it. You will save the cost of a new car. The fact that yours is worth zero on paper means absolutely nothing if it still works the way it's supposed to.
Bought a '98 Camry about 10 years ago for 8 grand. It's got 253,000 miles on it now. Off the top of my head, I've done the following non-routine maintenance to it: Exhaust replacement, front to back: $575 Idle air control valve: $800 (Dealer because I didn't have a good cheap mechanic at the time.) New suspension and steering parts & alignment: $800 Oil leak from oil pump: $500 (estimated mechanic cost, I did it for much less) New air intake hose: $40
Let's round that up to $3000 in case I've forgotten a few things.
I have a car that is quiet, drives well, doesn't leak, and is reasonably comfortable. It gets 27 mpg and still has sufficient power. The money I've put in it to keep it in good working order for 10 years doesn't add up to 10 months of car payments.
Would I like a newer ride? Sure, and I may get one eventually. The fact is that I can keep this car comfortable and running for cheap money. The occasional $800 hit saves me a few thousand a year.
The idea of "Western Civilization" is just another chauvinism - another mythology by which you are crudely manipulated as a tool of those same forces you imagine to be in "betrayal".
No man in earth understands ANYTHING, until he has insightful awareness that EVERYTHING he knows is WRONG.
Then his eyes may see clearly. He has no solution, but surely understands the nature of things.
You come across as a propagandist who bought a low UID and is trying hard to sound sage. That would make you an employee of the destructive elites that GP was talking about.
On the off-chance you're spouting vague Eastern-sounding philosophy in all seriousness, you would never give up many of the fruits of western civilization, even if you're slumming it somewhere to try to build your 'cred.' Perhaps you ought to consider western civ might be worth preserving.
Beyond that, the "No one really knows anything" philosophy has been very well developed by a couple of defenders of western civilization- Hayek and Sowell. Trade-offs still have to be weighed and decisions made. You seem like you'd rather shrug your shoulders and go rake a zen sand box garden, opening the door for the destructive elites GP spoke of.
No, I'm not trolling or kidding, I'm dead serious. If this is a widespread problem in the U.S., then could it be making people dumber and less emotionally stable?
We've allowed the education system to be corrupted by leftists who teach garbage. When 12 years of garbage collides with cold hard reality, stupidity and emotional instability are likely outcomes.
Now that you want to bring personal politics into this discussion, I'll follow your lead. I'm so ashamed of the Republican Party that I registered as a Democrat last year. At least Hillary has a proven track record as First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State. Trump has nothing but his ego and bluster.
I only found an unofficial page for City Park Apartments in Salt Lake City, Utah. I imagine the official page was quickly brutalized to the point where the owners took it offline.
So, if I understand you correctly, I have to apologize for everything that's imperfect with the United States- or Northern / Western Europe- before I daresay western culture is superior to others? Do you ever stop navel-gazing long enough to see where you're going?
Well, I'm even more extreme than that. I have this crazy idea that we're all citizens of Earth, and all policies that suggest which patch of dirt you're allowed to stand on, and for how long, are fundamentally evil and racist.
I have yet to see anyone who floats this thought acknowledge that some cultures are in fact better than others. If you let the wrong person in- and they're far more common in shitty cultures- they will degrade and destroy everything we've built with our nicer, more secure, more productive cultures. I'd go further, in fact, and state that people who float these 'borderless' ideas are the ultimate chauvinists, as they imagine that people only naturally think the same way some left-leaning westerner does. Either that, or you actually seek to undermine and destroy western civilization, and you make compassionate-sounding arguments in order to advance that cause. It's the same way that 'peace activists' are often not against war, per se, but they're simply on the other side, and are hiding their true motives for the sake of expedience.
If you weren't an asshole, you also wouldn't be dragging your personal politics into this discussion. But as long as you're here, shouldn't you also be utterly ashamed of our current political class, whose incompetence and malfeasance have made Trump look like a credible choice?
The marginal benefit to a non-english speaker learning English is huge. The marginal benefit to an English speaker learning any other single language is much less. You'd probably have to learn three or four languages to gain the same benefit as anyone else gets from learning English.
Once again they focus on the guns and not the issues that cause the violence in the first place; poverty, lack of education, unemployment and lack of opportunities to escape poverty.
In your list of 'root causes', you forgot at least one: degeneracy. Among many other things that most violent criminals have been deprived of, a well-founded moral code is at the top of the list.
"Barack Obama has a fine legal mind." To be blunt, this is unsubstantiated. For someone who has as many degrees and has held as many academic positions as Obama has, his scholarly writings are strangely absent.
mdsolar has a very anti-nuclear agenda and will post all kinds of non-issue stories with "the sky is falling" headlines. Slashdot, please do something and get rid of this one.
mdsolar may have issues, but he's great clickbait- hence why slashdot keeps him around.
There are pumps in that artificial lagoon that would tear a diver right up, but the pumps are protected by traveling screens and/or trash racks intended to keep out unwanted material- like a diver.
One thing I have noticed is that while conservatives are uniformly more likely to be consistently hateful, if you trigger the ire of liberals, they win all the awards for being truly vitriolic.
Conservatives don't care what you think, as long as you do as you are told. Liberals don't care what you do, as long as you think as you are told.
Quote of the day. Reposting in case anyone missed it due to AC filters.
Your newly redefined cry of 'RACIST!!!!' depends on a mishmash of cultural and moral relativity that I don't subscribe to. Some cultures are better than others, despite the wishes of you and your huffpo buddy. You can tell this by how people vote with their feet. Hell, why don't you tell me a list of countries you'd like to live in, or could possibly tolerate. Then maybe we can discuss what kind of culture dominates in those countries.
While you consider that, I'll give you a few quotes in this area (in retaliation for that huffpo article):
At some point someone just has to tell these kids the truth: some civilizations are better than others. But that has nothing to do with you. You are not inexorably linked to your ancestors. You can appropriate all the good insights anywhere you find them. To deny yourself goodness, truth, and beauty wherever it is, you wind up diminishing your own dignity, treating yourself as if you were no more than your color or your genes.
These and other dramatic and heartening rises of whole peoples came from doing things that were often directly the opposite of what is being urged upon less fortunate groups in the United States today. Far from painting themselves into their own little cultural corner and celebrating their "identity," these peoples sought the knowledge and insights of other peoples more advanced than themselves in particular skills, technologies, or organizational experience. It took centuries for the English to absorb the cultural advances brought by such conquerors as the Romans and the Normans and by such immigrants as the Huguenots, Germans, Jews, and others who played a major role in developing the British economy. Their early dependence on outsiders was painfully demonstrated when the Romans pulled out of Britain in the fifth century, in order to go defend their threatened empire on the continent, and the British economy and political structure both collapsed. Yet ultimately--more than a thousand years later--the British rose to lead the world into the industrial revolution and controlled an empire containing one-fourth of the land area of the earth and one-fourth of the human race.
"Gutmensch" was selected because, in connection with the current refugee crisis in Germany, it defames "tolerance and helpfulness as naïve, dumb and worldly innocent, as having a helper syndrome or as moral imperialism," the jury president, linguist Nina Janich, told the press.

You're free to advocate prosecution of Colin Powell if you wish. Nothing Powell did, legal or illegal, exonerates Hillary Clinton.

The protestant work ethic is responsible for the current wealth of our nation. Don't knock it too casually.

Social welfare states that enact a 'right to die' see that 'right' turn into a duty. It's pretty much for the reason you hint at.
Debbie Wasserman-Schulz said straight out the super delegates were put in place to ensure party insiders would win against grassroots candidates.
We live in a big world with so many skilled people that it's much harder to stand out.

There's nothing in the underlying material that would support an Islamic reformation

And this one from Thomas Sowell:
These and other dramatic and heartening rises of whole peoples came from doing things that were often directly the opposite of what is being urged upon less fortunate groups in the United States today. Racist alarmism is much more fun.
When did Islam become a race? Oh, I remember, when it became a way for the Gutmensch* to dodge any serious discussion about cultures.
