    I've been noticing significantly longer start-up times for Java over the years.

    Really? On my systems, Java 5 is enormously faster than 1.4 and earlier at starting up the JVM. It actually makes it bearable to write command line utilities in Java.

    Needless to say she was devastated as much of it was content she couldn't get back, just because you can disable DRM doesn't mean it's not dangerous.

    But she's going to keep on using Windows, right?

    She's "devastated". Just not enough to actually do anything.

    Of course, Unison (or rsync) will only synchronize mail reliably if you use Maildir format. But then again, only an idiot would use mbox format on the server side anyway.

    Yup. Use IMAP, that's exactly what it's for.

    "I need a way to send someone a message instantly, rather than having it go into their e-mail inbox, is there some tool that will do it?"

    C++ has grown enormously since then, and it's widely understood that it takes years of practice to be proficient in it.

    That's really not the case. Adobe reader is better than xpdf in a lot of ways, but do a quick poll to see what most people have installed and I bet you'll find almost no one has linux version of Reader, but most have xpdf or ghostscript based PDF viewers.

    And the smart ones have evince.

    It used to work in any browser. The change they've made is to make it so it only works in IE on Windows. Major downgrade.

    Turbo Direct Injection (TDI) diesels provide better mileage than hybrids in pretty much every case.

    Consumer Reports testing says otherwise. The most fuel-efficient TDI, the Golf, gets less MPG than a Prius, even though the Prius is significantly larger. That's when driven through an identical test course designed to simulate real world driving.

    Toyota seems to be popular because of hype and advertising, rather than cars that are actually (mechanically) good.

    Independent data from Consumer Reports says otherwise. Year after year.

    This car looks worse than most cars of the late 70s early 80s

    I think the Prius is one of the best looking non-sports cars on the road. It actually looks somewhat like a futuristic "concept car" design, rather than yet another Ford Taurus clone.

    Or not. Ford are shutting down 14 plants in the US and moving all the jobs to Mexico and China. GM have been moving their manufacturing to Mexico too. Meanwhile, Toyota built their first US plant in Kentucky in 1988. They're still expanding into the US, they just built a big new manufacturing plant in Texas.

    Tell me, why should I give my money to Ford and GM who are busy shifting jobs out of the US, rather than to Toyota who are investing in the US? How does that support the US?

    Now I'll wait until the strongly rumored January price drop and their appearance in stores.

    Well, having programmed in both, I'd take Objective-C over C++ any day. If you know C and an OO programming language, you can pick up Objective-C in a weekend. The same cannot be said of C++!

    That said, I'm looking forward to automatic memory management being added to Objective-C.

    Well, it was designed during the 90s, when there was that weird US fashion for beveled edges on computer UIs. I never understood it. Glad it's dead now.

    I don't have a problem with the CPU speed or graphics card, my problem with it is the OS sucks.

    Now, a machine like that with OS X running on it...

    It's called OpenStep. If the Linux community had any sense they'd kill off GNOME, keep KDE around for a while in maintenance mode, and focus efforts on OpenStep.

    Well, the problem with nuclear power is it's more expensive than wind power, and only has a net energy gain of around 5:1, compared to 40:1. And that's assuming nothing goes wrong. One significant accident at your nuclear plant, and you can make a net energy loss...

    I've never had ACPI problems or crashes with the open source drivers. I have with the proprietary ones.
