If Java's import didn't suck so much, you wouldn't have the problem to start with. One problem of Java is that importing packages doesn't import dependencies. For instance, org.xml.sax.XMLReader is no use without org.xml.sax.helpers.XMLReaderFactory, yet importing the former doesn't bring in the latter.

Java is just too painful to write without an IDE. Ruby, on the other hand, is not painful even with nothing more than a text editor.

I ask because I've never seen any SIP software described as interoperating with any other SIP software. Maybe I just need to try a bunch of this stuff and see for myself.

Yes, that's the single biggest problem I have with RPM.

Sure, you can layer Yum or APT on top of RPM and have a workable UI, but that doesn't solve the fundamental problem, which is that RPM still regularly corrupts its own database, sometimes irreperably. The most recent occurrence for me was a couple of months ago on a SuSE 10.1 system; I never did find out what triggered it, but I wiped and reinstalled and it's been fine since, so the hardware doesn't seem to be the problem.

I've resorted to taking a back up of the entire /var/lib/rpm directory before every major update. I shouldn't have to do that. I have never, never had APT or dpkg hang or corrupt their data irreperably.
