I agree with Hadlock. The editors are choosing the articles with negative spin more often. The same subject is often submitted multiple times by different people with different slants, yet the editors are picking out the negative articles more often than the positive ones even when the positive ones come out first.

That co-operation you speak of only works inside a community.

I don't know where the original poster keeps hearing this bias towards people believing that humans are naturally out to kill each other, but that's not the bias I see. Most people believe, evidence to the contrary, the myth of the "noble savage" & that kids will naturally be nice & innocent until culturally polluted by things like racism among other memes of how nice we are to each other.

The noble savage was always disconnected from the fact that all societies, even those presented as peaceful were making war on their neighbors (& it didn't take the arrival of european colonialism to spoil their "eden" though the europeans did make a habit of massacring the natives once they arrived it also happened before).

As for kids being naturally nice & innocent until spoiled by cultural pollution from adults, that innocence & acceptance only works within what they consider to be "their" community/tribe. Introduce a stranger to their midst & the stranger is almost always excluded. Given how easily groups of children the world over band together into what can only label tribes; I'd say that any study that doesn't take this into account is flawed to the point of being useless.

...It probably failed where Minitel succeeded...

Bleh, Revisionism of the first order. My first job in France over 25 years ago was programming a minitel server so I know what I'm talking about.

Minitel only succeeded if you omit the massive investments France Telecom & the French government made in developing & deploying it. "Free" terminals, massive investment write-offs, special development funding that was systematically forgotten when cooking the books to show how "profitable" the minitel was. The only reason the Minitel took so long to die off is that they mandated a number of services to only be available on it way back & refused funding to make it available on the Internet.

I've read through the entire thread & not one person picked up on two of the biggest reasons it failed:
    - The Minitel was setup as a means of making sure that France Telecom got a cut of any money made on it. Minitel was setup so that customers were billed by FT for all services & FT transferred some of the money to whoever proposed the service. It was much like Apple's Appstore model but where Apple is generally liked by those on the appstore, FT wasn't. People thing Apple is greedy with their 30% cut? FT was worse...
    - Minitel was based on X25, not IP. Those old enough to have suffered through the installation & maintenance of X25 networks know why it failed.

Dell has had nice screens for a generation or two but the laptops just aren't durable enough. The hinges give out, the plastic cracks etc.
HP has nice equipment but is more expensive than the others for little gain
Lenovo are pretty nice but are missing a 17' model that I want for my next PC
Mac Book Pro's are incredibly durable with the unibody shrugging off mistreatment that would break anything else.
Sony has nice stuff but not what I want.

I spent a long time avoiding Apple because I wanted something easy to dock. With Thunderbolt that is no longer a problem for macs. There was also a problem where the 17" MBPs were not using WUXGA but a lower resolution but that stopped over a year ago.

When at work, 90% of my work was on the WUXGA because whenever I went full page, the 120 pixels missing from the FHD was annoying enough to make me pull the window back over to my main screen. After a while you just leave it on the WUXGA unless I need to compare data between 2 full screen windows. I've got a 1440x900 for the moment that I'll be replacing with another WUXGA as soon as I get the time to buy it.

Let me put it this way: Using a FHD instead of a WUXGA is like adding 3 toobars to every window. For work, I'll gladly pay the price difference between the two.

You don't have to give up vertical resolution, you just need to buy a WUXGA screen: 1980*1200. Sure it's more expensive than the flood of FHD 1980*1050 screens out there, but then that's because not enough people are passing on the FHD & preferring to buy WUXGA. I moved from a 24" 1600*1200 years ago to WUXGA. The additional 380 makes real dual page editing possible as the controls can be places to the sides. I had a loaner FHD as a second screen for a while but replaced it with a WUXGA as soon as I could: The missing 80 vertical pixels made full page editing at 100% impossible.
