  1. I wonder.. on Facebook VP Slams Intel's, AMD's Chip Performance Claims · · Score: 1

Are they using the intel compiler?
Are they making their binaries more thread-friendly?
Are they using cc flags that exploit the new cache/features/instructions?
Are they running their OS's with at least basic tuning to contain interrupts and kernel activity to particular CPUs?
Are they using new hyperthreading efficiently and consciously or just disabling it?
Are they running with taskset wrappers to decrease context switching on an obviously stochastic workload?
Are they tweaking their networking configuration internally to optimize for their specific packet loads?

Because I've found that the new hardware (Nehalems, for example) will give you a heck of a speed boost if you're doing the above.

It's real easy to have the compatibility features mask performance, really you gotta look at it like a new platform.

Anyway, those comments smell like making excuses to me, they are not even remotely specific enough to be defensible.

  18. Re:Can this be done with Linux? on Nexland Pro800Turbo Load Balancing Router Review · · Score: 2, Informative
Yes, there is a feature in ip route 2 that lets you set up load balancing out multiple connections. It's a bit of a muddle to set up & make it work with IPTables but worth the effort. Setting cronjob to test if things are "up" is a little harder than it sounds though, a dying T1 line often is up 30% of the time, which is actually reason to leave it working for inbound email etc..

    Here's our linux software solution:

    http://www.rainfinity.com/products/rainconnect.htm l

This software uses a linux kernel module that does some neat tricks with packet rewriting to do nat, inspect & modify DNS server replies, nat rules, etc. It also has a configurable connection monitoring service & a bunch of recommended deployments for HA email/web serving/outbound surfing, etc. Works on Solaris and Win2k too..

Here's a software solution from my company (Rainfinity) that doesn't use BGP:

    http://www.rainfinity.com/products/rainconnect.htm l

Runs on linux, does other rather clever things (can rewrite DNS replies as well for *inbound* load balancing). It works nicely with either a commercial firewall (checkpoint/raptor) or IPTables; or can be used just as an HA router in front of existing firewalls. A feature this crowd will like- you can do everything via a command-line interface if you don't like GUIs too!

The original radio scripts book is my favorite of the hitchhiker's series, and Douglas's _Last Chance to See_ is my favorite book. I love reading the introspections of clever people with a sense of humor. Michael Crichton's _Travels_ is in the same league.

Douglas Adams has been one of my favorite authors for some time. I went to several book readings/signings, and I also have to say that he was sharp as a tack, extremely gracious, and had an easy-going sense of humor even with Rabid fans.
