I have a Samsung BD-P1000 (one of the earliest players) I forget what disc it was, but I did have to update the firmware at one point to get it to play a movie. It was much simpler than I expected. That said, I do find the player frequently has issues reading newer discs (I will need to re-load the movie MANY times to get it to play - older discs dont have this problem)
Granted, some of the stories are sufficiently plausible that it is hard to tell, but things like this? just obvious. And then people giving serious replies to them. Oh how I love thee/.
there is one very important reason slashdot should have a datacenter in ashburn/reston/vienna... I live in the area, and could dream of working there;) what more reason do they need?
go to hell seriously I eat a double bacon cheeseburger every single day I'm 5'7, weigh 127lbs, have low blood pressure, and good cholesterol levels. I need to eat like this just to MAINTAIN my weight.
the last thing I need is to have it made even harder
Hi, I have low blood pressure, low cholesterol, am slightly underweight but in generally excellent health (at least, thats what the doctors tell me). I eat no fruits, vegetables, or fish. I eat very little chicken. I eat almost nothing but red meat.
I'm not saying my diet is right for everyone, but I wish people would stop going on and on about how unhealthy red meat is.
I grew up with TV, computers, video games, movies. I was one of the only kids around who had a TV and a computer in his bedroom.
That didnt stop me from reading, and generally being accepted as brilliant by most of the people I know.
And yes, I did watch INORDINATE amounts of television. I happened to particularly enjoy TLC when I was a kid. I learned a great deal sitting around watching TV, so dont knock the medium. I learned a great deal from video games too (oregon trail and the original civilization FTW).
I learned algebra when I was 7. How? A math video game.
Be more open to experiences that differ from your own. I'm not saying that my way was the right way, I'm just saying that your way isnt the only way either.
I'm dead serious - I absolutely love this keyboard, but lack the skills to be able to build it myself. Is there anywhere that a person can go to actually buy things like this? I want one!
I know a lot of the "TV Groups" get shows long before they air. How? Well, one in particular that I know of used to pull them out of the air. It seems that Fox would send out the completed episodes about a week before they were supposed to air, via satellite, to assorted groups (I dont know who, but I assume their affiliates). These "pirates" would pull the complete shows right out of the air (yes, I know, its much more complicated and involved than I'm making it sound, but I'm simplifying here people), encode them, and release them, well before the actual airing.
No inside job needed, and noone handing out things they werent supposed to.
boy, you sure got my number there been drinking nothing but Coke morning, noon, and night for as long as I can remember, and I'm an absolute WHALE at 115lbs!
I went through a similar experience. I live in the DC Metro area, not exactly the middle of nowhere. And yet, ever since the ATT->Cingular switch, my cell phone hardly works ANYWHERE. People suggested trying a new phone, I tried it, it doesnt help. What is really fun is, apparently the new tower I use is so far away that my apartment is now on the very edge of the cell bubble, so I can watch as my phone (not moving) goes from some signal to none at all. Weee!
ahh, very cool - I'll admit, my BBC engine knowledge is a bit lacking. I'm definitely more of an SBC guy
you might want to check out the new LSX block GM performance is putting out tho. I've been hearing talk of 488ci (iron block) promising huge huge n/a numbers.
help me out here... ls5? I'm aware of the LS1 (97-04) LS6 (01-04) LS2 (05+) and LS7 (05+)
But I've never heard of an LS5 before (and yes, I do own a corvette - '99 LS1).
That said, fiero's are generally fun cars to mess around with - there is a really nice F355 kit out there for it. It was a great, lightweight car that got killed by poor management decisions (wimpy v6 engine and a tendency to burst into flames, for starters)
Back (a few months) before those guys built their airsoft sentry gun, I made one as well. Except mine shot foam discs, and was intended as a toy for our cats.
Basically, I took a toy from toys r us that had a motion sensor and shot foam discs. I then mounted it to a PTZ base for a webcam, and mounted a camera on it. I used the motion tracking software that came with the base so that it would follow the cats around, and it would fire based on the movement. I also had it tied into a web interface, so I could control it (and fire it, it had an IR controller that would make it shoot) remotely.
At one point, I even took off the IR filter and added an IR lamp so that it would work in the dark too.
he is right about the utter ineptitude of EDS, however. I'm familiar with their work on the NMCI contract - and on other contracts (army, for example) - and they have got to be the worst bunch of people I've ever worked with. I dont blame the employees - I know what they make, and it aint much - but EDS really needs to be willing to spend the money to do things right. In fact, they are in risk of losing their NMCI contract due to how poorly they've been performing.
You make it sound impossible. The cheap way to do it is, team up with other colleges. One of them has the pipe going into them. You all pay for more manageable connections to them, onto the I2 network. You all split the costs. I know of several colleges that have taken this route. Hell, I know a COMMUNITY COLLEGE that's on I2.
It is also highly useful for VTC work, which is getting to be a very big use for it.
I'd argue that the overcrowding of our roads is all the more reason for big v8's as opposed to little gutless 4 cyldiners. Why? They're safer (no, I'm not talking about SUVs - I think we can all agree that those can go away).
I'm 23, and a guy - a nightmare for insurance. I have a '99 corvette and a '99 VW golf. Guess what? The corvette is cheaper to insure, because fewer people get into accidents with them.
All that low end power that you think is unnecessary is EXACTLY where you need power for moving in traffic and accident avoidance.
I wont badmouth the solstice or sky. Hell, I want a sky (when they come out with the Redline Turbo version), but let me tell you what: that sort of car sucks in traffic. You know what my corvette is replacing? A miata. It was a quick fun little car, but driving it in traffic was such a nightmare I wound up supercharging it. Made all the difference in the world, but wasnt so good for the gas mileage. I thought it was well worth the trade.
excellent point, I did forget about twin-turbos for that purpose. However, as you've said, no OEMs have done it yet better than a v8 does it. I'm not going to say its impossible, but it does demonstrate that my v8 hasnt quite outlived its usefulness just yet;)
OT: this is probably the most intelligent slashdot conversation I've ever had - I'd friend you, but my I'm over my relationship limit lol
I still have to disagree with you on the effectiveness of a v6 of i4 engine in replacement of the v8. Part of the big appeal of the v8 is the low-end torque, not top end power. Sure, you can string out a 6 or 4 cyl engine to make all the HP you'll ever need, but you'll be sacrificing bottom-end. The only way to increase bottom end power effectively (without losing top-end) is to increase the engine displacement (hence ultra-high revving honda engines with no bottom end power, large displacement - 3.5 Liter - nissan V6 engines which I would argue are no better than a v8 at that point, etc..)
Turbochargers could be a good solution. Not only do they produce much more power by making use of otherwise wasted exhaust gasses, but they also can increase fuel efficiency. However, you'd have a hard time finding one small enough that it doesnt have turbo lag but big enough to provide reasonable power.
mmmm posts like that just make me wanna run outside and drive my corvette (with a great big v8 engine) around for a couple hours for no particular reason.
Of course, despite that huge inefficient V8, it DOES still get 20-28mpg (I've even seen 34 on the highway).
please dont lump all cars with v8 engines in with the SUVs. SUVs suck up gas because they're big and heavy - so it takes a lot of power (and therefore gas) to move them. and dont go blaming the auto industry for this. They make SUVs because people want them. I honestly cant think of much they could do to make them more fuel efficient either. The hybrids I've seen BARELY get any better mileage at all, and there is just only so much you can do to lighten a vehicle that big.

hey, I want an april fools achievement too!
*pouts and makes a sad face*
Let's face it, this is the best thing to be on slashdot since OMGPONIES!
*sighs* I kinda LIKED that theme too... ah well, such is life

my 5.7L V8 engine (1999 corvette) gets, according to my math and the on-board calculator, 34mpg highway (at around 75mph)
Explain again how a smaller engine would be better?
wow
you are SO right
I mean, its not like there are literally MILLIONS of people chomping at the bit for the pending expansion
WoW is doomed!
I want to see that list! Please follow through on this, it would be a fantastic read.

are you serious? Isnt this the guy who did Valley of the Dolls? I'm sorry, anyone who makes a movie that bad is NOT qualified to criticize others.
