  1. People seem to be missing the point on Vapochilled Pentium 4 System At 3.3GHz · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Overclocking isnt supposed to be a "useful" thing to do anymore. Chip speeds are increasing fast enough and are frankly fast enough already, that there is no actual NEED to do it. Is there any NEED for people to supercharge their cars? Do they do it anyway?

    It's basically the same thing. These are just people trying to push what they've got as far as they can. The point isnt the cost, or even really the gain. They're just trying to see what they CAN do, and how to do it. You may think this stuff is worthless now, but wait and see how long it is before these radically overclocking cooling techniques become commonplace in home PCs (once scaled down a bit).

    It's actually more of a chinese fighting style. Have you ever seen the chinese straightswords, like the Tai Chi sword? This makes sense, when you consider that the force is highly reminiscent of Taoism. It just seems to me like Lucas is trying to draw parallels. The Jedi are the Kung Fu masters of the future.

  6. sure thing on Games in High School? · · Score: 1

    My high school had it.. sort of. We had the Computer Game Club. Anyone could join, and on Wednesdays(when we had half days), and occasionally on other days when we could get permission, we would load up our special game club hard drives(which the school provided) into the lab computers, and game for hours. All it took to get permission to do it was that we agree to review all the games we played, so the school could justify that we got something of value out of it. I myself was the president of the club for about 2 years, and it was great. I think all schools should have something of this sort.

  8. I dont know about you all on No-Tech Schools In Tech Land · · Score: 1

    But the first toy my kids get, when the time comes, will be a computer. I started on them when I was probably 5 or 6, and got my own when I was 8. Frankly, I wish I had been more exposed to them when I was younger. Technology seems to me to be the future. Granted, it cant replace things like math or art classes, but it certainly shouldnt be phased out either. I might shift the focus a bit more towards their use than is done now, but I wouldnt make it entirely computerized. There is something to be said for doing SOME things the old fasioned way.

    For the love of God, Invader Zim is the best new show since The Simpsons. I agree that it may have been targeted to the wrong audience, but that doesnt seem to have been its only problem. I watched nick all the time to try to find Zim, but they would never tell you when it would be on. How are you supposed to find a show they never advertise? Let's all hope that somehow the show lives on.

  10. yes, his PC is _DEAD_ on Upgrading the Memory on a DreamCast? · · Score: 2, Informative

    Ok, just to clarify for all of you:
    his PC is _DEAD_ not just one or two components, but basically all of them. The few parts that can be salvaged, quite honestly, arent worth it. We have everything we need as far as tools, parts, etc.. on hand, free. Nothing we do to this system is gonna cost us. That's part of the beauty of it, we're just at this for kicks, to see how much we can do to it. I mean, if we really wanted, we could probably upgrade the processor too, it wouldn't be reasonable to do it, but we probably could. We're on a college campus with an OC-3, and network drops in every room, so we've got net access, so we dont need to worry about the whole modem thing. I'm not asking you guys to understand why I want to do this, and I certainly dont expect you guys to think I'm sane for it, I just want to know what all has been done, what can be done, and what is within reason to attempt to do, if you guys know more than I, which I would assume most of you do. Thanks guys.

  11. Re:Dreamcast != PC on Upgrading the Memory on a DreamCast? · · Score: 2, Informative

    The thing is, he's using his roommate's computer for all that stuff. He doesnt need the dreamcast to be his PC, he's still covered as far as all that is concerned. We're doing this for fun. We just want to see how far we can make it go(we've got a lot of free time, and are very bored). As far as the BBA goes, we're actually planning on making one ourselves. The majority of the people on my hall are CompSci or Engineering Majors, so we're pretty confident we can pull it off. They have 2 dreamcasts in their room, so they're not too concerned about destroying one of them, either. The linux image on the CD only takes up about 250 meg, so we're gonna try to create our own CD with a lot of the basic apps we want on it, to save us from most of the NFS and other issues. Really, we would be more than happy to have a dreamcast setup to be on the network, running X-Windows with a decent web browser, and Gaim running on it. The RAM upgrade, really, would mainly be in hopes of decreasing boot and application loading time. This is for fun guys, we know it's not gonna be a REAL pc replacement(though there have been people talking about making a solid-state drive for it...). I'm really just interested in what all has been done, and how much is possible to do with it.

  12. Dont be so down on the whole thing on Hacker U. · · Score: 1

    Granted, this may not be the ideal group to be doing this, but I dont think there's anything necessarily wrong with a hack school. I, for example, am not a hacker. I am very good with computers, I've been using them all my life, but I couldnt hack to save my life. Is it because I havent spent enough time working with computers? I doubt it. With most computer things, I can just see what I'm doing, and it's easy, but I simply dont understand hacking. It is still a skill I would find invaluable, as I intend to move into network security as my field of work. I would love to be able to sign up for some classes on hacking, taught by hackers. While these guys may not be the people we want to do it, the idea seems fine with me. As far as concern about script kiddies and the like... they dont need a class to be able to do what they do. That's the whole idea behind their title. They can already just point and click, so why would they bother with a hacking class? Even if they did take it, what are the odds that such people would actually pick up anything? They tend to be the more lazy among us, so I seriously doubt they would go wholeheartedly into the class.

  14. Copying CDs on MPAA Sues Scour: Will Google Be Next? · · Score: 1

    What is next? Suing companies that sell CD-Burners and blank CD's because they can be used to pirate data? Come on people. The real thing that needs to be considered is this:
    Programs like napster and scour promote use of technology. The more technology of this nature(not pirating, but easy to use and popular) that is around, the more people will become involved in technology. This means more people will become more competent with computers. It will speed up the advancement of technology, and help us all get those new toys we wanted much faster due to a greater number of people in the field(I still want a flying car or a transporter... or a lightsaber).

    Software like this will, in the end, be of benefit to the whole of mankind, and such innovation should be encouraged.
