    Right, but that set of processes could be run at some higher nice level, which in theory would result in them preempting the runaway process. I'll shut up now because this is easy to test and I've never done it.

    Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try some out.

    I'm far from knowledgeable about what's possible to do right now using various tuning knobs. I guess I'm surprised that the GUI doesn't get priority over this sort of runaway process, but I have to temper this with saying that I never played with adjusting the nice level of various relevant processes.

    Increasing the RAM size is not a solution though, since the kind of runaway process that causes the freeze will allocate everything it can anyway.

    help in the case when a process goes nuts allocating memory, and stops the GUI dead in its tracks? No Alt-Ctrl-Backspace, no switching to console, unbearably slow remote login...

    this sort of ligament-based actuation has not developed more? The principle of having a small deflecting force among the muscle fibers producing a large sum force at the joint seems very elegant. Are the alternatives (pneumatic, hydraulic, servo) that much better? Maybe this design will turn out to be far more energy efficient than those.

    I didn't forget, actually inflation helps. Without inflation his account would overflow eventually, exponential growth being what it is. But this way, if the rates are exactly the same it can go on forever. I guess the government will need to denominate the dollar a bunch of times along the way. (I remember when they did this in ex-Yu, it was a riot and I mean the funny one).

    much of the content on the Internet today is distributed free to end-users for an indirect exchange of advertisement revenue.
    So does advertising really work? Do you know anyone who actually bought something through a banner ad, either directly or through subliminal suggestion? When I want to buy X, I either google it or walk into a store and pick out something reasonable.

    That's why parents should let their kids go out side and play/eat the dirt, they'll be better for it in the long run.
    I used to think so too, but what if you contract some nasty infection resulting in permanent damage?. And besides, don't only viruses build up immunity (via anti-bodies)?
