I feel your pain. I'm in the dallas area (carrollton) and I get many of the same problems. I have a friend who works for Sprint and he was able to explain the problem to me: as I understand it, the towers for Sprint's "digital network, built from the ground up" were actually purchased from another company. To save money and increase the network area, rather than adding more towers, Sprint turned all the transmitters all straight up as opposed to down toward the ground, resulting in HUGE footprints that all interfered with each-other. Now Sprint denies this whenever I ask them, however If you complain about dropped calls with a full signal indicator, they will generally give you a small air-time reimbursement, however I have yet to see any actual improvements in service. As soon as I get a raise, I'm switching to AT&T or SWBELL.. Those Nokia phones are the shit. Anyone have any input on the quality of those providers?

Actually, my understanding is that you cant write to two disks on the same /channel/ at the same time, however most modern EIDE controllers have two channels, each one capable of controlling two drives. Therefore, it is possible to write to two disks, provided they are on different channels.

  4. Re: What about... on Ask Slashdot: IDE Software RAID? · · Score: 1

If I understand your description correctly, this is one controller. Each EIDE controller can control up to four devices, two primary and two secondary. The primary devices exist on one cable and the secondary on another, therefore you can communicate with only one primary and one secondary device at any particular time.

    agreed.. blah blah ;)

I think this is a good idea, however it seems a little unnecessary. It seems to me that a few minor changes to the way the default scores are set (someone posted a suggestion about using averages as opposed to totals) would allow things to sort themselves out. That is to say, I dont see how this system is easily exploitable, unless you have a user who decides to continually post really good material simply to do a First Post with a score of 5, which i doubt.

For example, if a user regularly posts meaningful and enlightening information it will naturally be moderated up an his default score will be raised, while this may result in a few high-scored ("agreed") needless posts I think hes entitled to it, as he (or she) has demonstrated an interest and has added relevant material to previous discussions. If the user continues to post drivel, his default will naturally begin to decrease as his posts are moderated down.

But I did say this is a good idea. I think users *should* have the ability to moderate their own posts _down_ as they see fit, but the intricacies in allowing a user a pool of points to up his own score seems a little too confusing to implement cleanly.

    uhm.. heh thats all.

Except, Rob needs to put the users default score on the user page so we can see it without having to post a stupid 'test' post.. and what is the "# of # comments" on the main page? I thought it was #of comments above threshold and #of comments total, but for this article, it says "0 of 0 comments" Anyone?

Okay, Dragon Master step off your soapbox and give your head a chance to deflate. Regardless of how much martial arts training you have, you are not invencible. And martial arts, believe it or not, is not always based on size or strength. Tai Chi for example is based mainly on 'Chi', or energy, and can be mastered by students regardless of size or strength.

Martial arts is a discipline which develops not only strength and stamina but also control and self confidence/reliance. Although you may very well be skilled in your art, I can guarantee you that there are those that can best you. And one of those could just as easily be a well trained, 20 year old, normal build woman.

Martial arts training is one of the better, if not the best methods of rape prevention (provided the trainee is not the potential rapist, of course) and if more women (or men, to be fair) were able to better defend themselves in such a stressful and terrifying situation, we would have fewer sickos willing to risk attacking someone for fear that she may be the tri-state golden gloves champion.
