Tell me, oh great and wise greenie, how do you propose to feed the population with the reduced, shriveled crops that would result from the banning of everything you are opposed to?

That may be, but that is not the target audience of this book. This book is geared towards people who are just beginning to learn about databases. Because it is manga, it is targeted at a younger audience. I wouldn't give this to the guy in the next cubicle. But, I might give it to my 15yo nephew. Or, the 18 or 20yo who needs to know about an RDBMS is for her business/marketing course. Or, my 28yo xgf who loves manga and doesn't know much about computers and databases but may want/need to learn.

This is kind of dumbed down for space and a few other reasons, but....

Cell towers cost a lot of money, both to establish and to maintain. From land lease to electricity to connectivity, the towers require money.

And, a cell tower can only handle so many simultaneous users. The greater the population density, the more towers are needed to serve the population. Add to that the fact that users demand as much coverage as possible, even in remote areas, and you end up with some towers existing only to provide coverage to passing travelers, such as on long stretches of highway. Money must still be spent to maintain those towers even if there are few people using them.

There is a huge difference in the infrastructure required to send a text message and the infrastructure required to send an email. The infrastructure cost of cellular services is much higher, over a lower bandwidth channel, and amortized over a smaller number of customers per unit.

By the way, the data channel used to send email from a cell phone is robbed from the voice channels, so more people sending email means fewer channels available for voice calls.

In general, the G1 and the N series have two possible senarios:

One is that they are being bought soley because they have Linux on them. If this were the case, then only Linux geeks would be buying them and their data would skew the results.

The other is that they are being bought because of the functionality said devices provide and it is irrelevant which operating system is on the devices.

In either case, the fact that the devices have Linux on them is irrelevant because there is no choice. One can not get a G1 or an N series device with something other than Linux.

For an example of what happens when choice is available one only has to look at the "netbook" class of device, which had an extremely high Linux market penetration, but rapidly lost ground to Windows based units.

It could very well be people are having bad experiences with Ubuntu, are searching for help with Ubuntu, or are just trying to find out "what is this Ubuntu thing". It also ignores the fact that people might be searching for "WinXP", "Win xP", "Windows", or just "XP" rather than "Windows XP" and that people may be searching for "Vista" rather than "Windows XP" now that Vista is the version coming on new equipment.

Theft of service is defined by state laws, which vary by state, but typically define the crime as knowingly securing the performance of a service by deception or threat, diverting another's services to the actor's own benefit, or holding personal property beyond the expiration of rental period without consent of the owner. Intent to avoid payment may be presumed under certain circumstances, such as failure to pay for an applicable rental charge within 10 days after receiving written notice demanding payment.

Such laws generally classify the crime as a misdemeanor or felony according to the value of the services stolen. Specific amounts vary by state. Local laws should be consulted for specific requirements in your area. The following is an example of a state statute dealing with theft of services:

"(a) A person commits theft of services if

          1. the person obtains services, known by that person to be available only for compensation, by deception, force, threat, or other means to avoid payment for the services;
          2. having control over the disposition of services of others to which the person is not entitled, the person knowingly diverts those services to the person's own benefit or to the benefit of another not entitled to them; or
          3. the person obtains the use of computer time, a computer system, a computer program, a computer network, or any part of a computer system or network, with reckless disregard that the use by that person is unauthorized.

    (b) Absconding without paying for hotel, restaurant, or other services for which compensation is customarily paid immediately upon the receiving of them is prima facie evidence that the services were obtained by deception.

    (c) A person may not be prosecuted under this section for theft of cable, microwave, subscription, or pay television or other telecommunications service if the service was obtained through the use of a device designed and used to intercept electromagnetic signals directly from a satellite, including a device commonly referred to as a home earth station."
