  1. Re:Preserve the Hardware as Well? on Software Archaeology · · Score: 1

This is a very interesting story. As many slashdotters, I am an avid music fan, and was super excited when the new _Led Zeppelin_ DVD came out.

On this DVD set was two concerts, one '76 and one '79, that had been shot on an early videotape standard that no longer exists. In the linear notes it describes the difficulties of producing the DVD because not only had the video tape became extremly brittle, but there were virtually no players in existence that could read that tape format. I think the literally found one in a dump in Singapore.

  6. Blue LED? Nah!! on "Red is Dead" Optical Mice LED Change · · Score: 5, Funny

A blue LED doesn't help me get any work done. Sure, it may look cool and impress chicks, but even cooler would be an ALL KNOWING, ALL SEEING MOUSE, that wouldn't rely on me to push it around the mouse pad to get work done. It would do all the work for me because it would be that smart. And I would fall asleep during working hours.

It would be pretty damn good at playing quake as well, much better than me.

If I could find a mouse like that, well heck, then it could have a blue LED. Until then though, only red for it, until it gets smarter and starts doing some damn work for a change instead of just sitting there until I push it.

  7. Gameplay VS. Great Technology on Why Do Games and Game Studios Fail? · · Score: 1

Anybody remember the old Duke Nukem 3d? The monsters were sprites, you couldn't mouse aim, you couldn't have floors on top of floors (unless they were sprite walkways above sectors.) Every piece of scenery was a sprite.

I rememeber it well. It was FUN. Everything sprite could be shot and would explode. There were exploding fire extinguishers, exploding walls, mirrors, PIPE BOMBS, TRIP BOMBS!! Shrink ray, a freeze ray, teleporters, jet packs, trains, conveyor belt systems... A duke nukem death match (even though only supported 4 players) was FUN. It was so much fun.

I remember i used to play that with my friends over a modem all the time. It was great.

We all waited for the day when quake came out. I remember using an email FTP client to get quake when it finally came out.. and it came to me.. in like 40 uuencoded attachments that i downloaded individually and decoded.

Quake was amazing. The graphics were so good. It was spooky.. great atmosphere. Truly a work of art.

But stuff didn't explode. there were no jetpacks. No pipebombs or shrink rays....

So even though quake was far supierior as far as graphics go, it was a long time before we ever deathmatched with it. Probably not until the internet gaming community formed and great mods were available. Because as far as gameplay went, duke nukem blew quake out of the water (imho).

Of course, i guess i don't know much about games, because i enjoyed duke nukem more but I am pretty sure quake sold better.

I think if ID hadn't made the game so easy to modify and play on the internet, it may have flopped. I think the best part of the quake experience has always been the multiplayer aspect. The single player aspects of them have always left a lot to be desired , IMHO. And it was pretty amazing to go and deathmatch with 8 other people over a modem internet connection....

  8. Games or Pornography? on The Future of PC Gaming · · Score: 4, Interesting

This reminds me of an odd college lecture...

I had a PC achitecture class at my college. When we got to the history of video adapters, our professor explained in graphic detail how each successive graphics adapter (mono to cga to ega to vga) was pushed along by the need for more detail in pornography!

He pointed out how EGA looked lousy, and 256 color VGA was bad for round things with light, such as women's stomach's or breasts. He was pretty into this explanation. He wasn't kidding! This class had about an equal number of men and women.

I would have thought desktop publishing or gaming or something like that would have pushed graphics adapters along. So, maybe based on my professors great theory, maybe its not the gamers that are pushing on realtime rendered 3d graphics, but maybe the porn-mongers. And all this time I thought it was quake upping the odds!

Of course, if you listen to liebermen games such as GTA3 are supposedly pornography.... Maybe I highly realistic, pornographic 3D will be the killer app to get a GPU into every home. ;)
