Because we know all artists have originated all their work and techniques and not built upon the foundations of their predecessors...
I have a better idea...if you want to horde your art, then don't share it or release it to the general public...a real artist would prefer his/her work to be enjoyed by many rather than locked away with a financial key...IMHO
Now should people have protections for their created works? Of course....but for 70+ years? No way... if you can't make your money back in 14 years, then you made a bad decision with your investments and time...and probably weren't driven to make 'art' at all... societal progress and their ability to embrace and extend the work of previous generations shouldn't be stiffled to benefit a few. (and might I add those that benefit from extensions often simply bought the 'rights' and had no part in the creation of the 'art' at all)
Also, to get back on topic...the courts need to throw these awards out...its about time they have to prove actual losses...these large awards and litigation are just foundations upon which to extort out of court settlements...again IMHO
Its because of California's previously 'unreasonable' emissions standards that you can breath in most of the cities in the Union now. Oh how I long for days when I drove up to LA and my eyes burned...yeah, those were the days...
I'd get one of those cheapo walmart linux boxes...stick it in a closet....then just use rsync or rdiffbackup....with a real box you'd have the luxury of being able to add additional storage easy...you can even setup a software raid for extra protection...
Come now...if you have a trunk you must be concealing some illegal activity. I bet your trunk is filled with cocaine and corpses. "It should come as no surprise that" you "think" you "can hide illegal activity" and you "will attempt to" so... =P
This may have been true up to this one. Have you listened to the man speak without a teleprompter? I wouldn't let this guy work on my car, let alone run a country. People can disagree about his politics, and such, but not this. Anyone still defending this man's intelligence must be looking for inner justification of previous support. "That's how I see it anyway"
Putty also works on Linux. You can compile it or use the premade binaries. It doesn't store your servers in the registry though like on Windows...oh the humanity!
Of course you can't stop people from being stupid, but you can design around their stupidity. Why have a password at all if its default? Better to have no password and block remote access until one is set, which is basically what mysql had to do for similiar reasons. What is funny is this is just a new version of old school. Anyone else remember war dialing?
"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
Here's my analogy. What if every lock manufacture sold you house locks with the same key and left it up to the buyer to have it rekeyed after purchase...
The problem with CD's is they are horrible technology. Even CD's that are well cared for get damaged from normal use. Thats part of why I stopped buying CD's (and DVD's). Half my collection won't play anymore. I pulled out some old tapes I made when I was a kid and not only do they play, they sound good still. I'm not saying tapes are better, but can you imagine if they tried to sell tapes back in the day that weren't in a protective case? I don't believe they chose to go with open discs just because its cheaper, but because they don't want them to last a long time. As much as I dislike Sony for all their proprietary stuff, a mini disc is a superior design to a CD. I had always wished Sony had made a floppy type computer drive that used mini discs. Anywho, I'll consider buying movies and music when they provide more reliable technology. (or guarantees that allow replacements in the event of failure) At least we are moving in a DRM free digital direction. I can trust myself to make reliable backups of my digital files. A DVD-RAM/minidisc type design for physical media would be ideal, and I'd be happy to pay a little extra for the comfort of knowing my investment is safe. I mean DVD/CD design is fine for distributing something...but not for regular use, IMHO.
Works better how? Very broad statement... Linux works fine for me and all my customers for all our needs. Don't you really think it depends on WHAT you are using it for? Jeez....lol
Just curious, how does FreeBSD do with 64 procs and 64 gigs of memory?
I have a sneaking suspicion that China would in fact have ICBM's that can reach the US. They are making spacecraft now, and the technology isn't very different, except that instead of trying to escape Earth's gravity, you are merely trying to lob it up very high and have its return trip land on a target.
Decided to do some quick research before I hit Submit...they've had missiles that could reach the US for over 20 years, just not all of it. Seems things are changing this year...
"Due to begin deployment this year is the standard Dong Feng-31, or CSS-9, whose limited range of 4,500 miles allows it to reach Alaska or Hawaii. But the more advanced and road-mobile Dong Feng-31A, due to begin deployment in 2007, will have a range of 7,000 miles, making it the first Chinese ICBM that could hit Washington, D.C., Paris or Madrid.
Also in development is the Julang-2 (JL-2), a submarine-launched version of the DF-31 that would be deployed in 2007-10. Beijing plans to build five to seven Jin-class (Type 094) nuclear-powered subs, each of which will carry up to 16 JL-2s.
Experts say the DF-31A family represents a quantum leap in Chinese ICBM capability. The missiles will replace 20 two-stage liquid-fueled Dong Feng-5, or CSS-4, rockets that entered service some 25 years ago. The silo-based DF-5s, with a range of 5,200 miles, can hit most of Europe and Australia, and the western United States. Moreover, their fixed locations makes them vulnerable to a pre-emptive U.S. strike."

Everquest had paid expansions to no end...it got to the point that users felt cheated as most added content was beyond a casual players reach, but the expansion was needed because of UI and other in game improvements. If you didn't upgrade, soon you were a bane to other players because you didn't have this guild UI feature or that map. In addition, the sheer number of expansions put a financial barrier up to new blood. The number of new players dropped dramatically and the need to squeeze more from revenue of expansions increased. Also, the world became so big, that you had trouble finding people in large expanses of the game. It was a viscious cycle that resulted in my wife and myself leaving the game for good.
I understand they need to fund the creation of new content...however, I also understand that WoW is one of the largest revenue generating games in history. They have the money to pay for new content. Period.

I have used desktop linux for the last 5 years in my job. While I'll readily admit that it isn't always a wonderland of joy, that sometimes I have problems doing things some other users do, I keep using it. There must be some reason? And its because, for me at least, the pros outweigh the cons. That said...
I get really tired of people shitting on Linux as if its inferior. Its not. Not even remotely. Any inferiority that is usually assigned to Linux is not because of anything wrong in the design and implementation of Linux or in its abilities, instead they are created by outside forces. Its not that Linux is incapable of playing HD movies...it's that its not being allowed to do so. It is draconian control and obfuscation of information that limits its usefulness.

I'm sorry if my nerdiness allows me to find value in desktop Linux and those pesky useful programs I use daily. And I can't believe I would allow my pointy-head to obscure my vision of the mighty Vista and to falsely attribute what I thought was a funny quip to the deity they call Bill Gates. Please forgive me.
I'll open up my wallet immediately and pay again for the programs that provide the same functionality I used them for 10 years ago. In fact, tomorrow, I'm going to buy a 2007 copy of Office so I can type papers extreme style. If I'm feeling frisky I might fire up one of those default ultra handy default Windows applications like Calculator or Mines or Pinball. After that I'm going to go out and buy a car I'm only allowed to drive to Walmart and McDonalds, because I'm told thats all I am licensed for.
Like I said before...ENJOY YOUR VISTA. Why is that so hard? If thats what you want...please god..by all means...enjoy! It's your computer after all...umm...right?
How's this for fuel? I'm typing this on my OSX powerbook! Oh the humanity!

At some point, Linux will be able to play these discs because the DRM will be cracked. When that day comes, I will not have the restrictions at the OS level that you will. Until that day comes, I won't be purchasing either of these restrictive technologies. Like I said, enjoy your Vista.

Unbelievable that you would stake the existence of humanity on a big maybe....
We were told that coal stacks could belch out smoke and not harm this HUGE Earth...but then they discovered acidification of lakes.
We were told that mercury from coal and other industrial uses was released is such small amounts that it wouldn't impact the natural environment. Now you can't eat fish often in most of the continental United States for fear of mercury poisoning....
I could go on and on...(DDT...Clear Cutting...Over fishing...Ozone...Vioxx...ect)
You honestly think that we can alter the atmospheric CO2 levels with no consequences? Already the ocean is becoming more acidic due to increased absorbtion of CO2. The environments and organisms this (among other pollutants) will alter are just now beginning to be understood. But you are willing to throw the dice before we have a good understanding because some shipping lanes might open up? Yeah, and heat isn't hard to live with, thats why there is a burgeoning population in Death Valley, CA. The climate changes and altered weather patterns might just help some people. But it might really harm others...climate change in Somalia have been catostrophic for example...
