"Nooooooooooooo, THAT"S NOT TRUE, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!"
"Search your feelings, you know this to be true."
I tink dat this has 2 doo with dem mobile devices. Dem mobile devices are found in your ARM, which is inside your smartphone, inside your tablet, and inside your car (!!!!!!!!!). I hope dat you get one soon, and now the apple has their ipad and the android devices everywhere. But Windows 8 is good! And soon dey will have it running office on a tablet with 3 hour battery life@! Kewl.
I'd like to respond to a few of your points. In terms of recommending patents and DRM to a startup, I find the attitude on slashdot to be fairly anti-patent and definitely anti-DRM. In terms of "Microsoft's shitty business ethics," I don't really feel they've been called each and every time, nor have they paid dearly for them. Look at the ruling in the Department of Justive/IE/Netscape case, which they in effect won by Judge Jackson's speaking to the press, or the Sun Microsystems Java license violation dispute, which got reduced after Sun won the case. It seems to me, instead, that Microsoft accepts the litigation and penalties levied against them as a cost of business, and is willing to accept them as a cost of their strategy. In terms of Microsoft's right to defend their IP, you have a point, but of course, I suspect this is more of the same FUD. One would certainly have expected them to sue Motorola, so Google and Microsoft could finally argue the validity of these patents in court. I suspect that will never happen. How patents SHOULD WORK in terms of protection of individual's and company's IP, and how they DO WORK, is a matter of considerable argument. My chief concern here isn't simply with Microsoft, but in terms of the power they confer upon the multi-billion dollar corporation that are collecting them, as well as patent trolls. The growth in the number of patents being issued is well documented, some of them suspect. If we could rely on a court system that was a level playing field, it might be acceptable, but I expect corporations with much deeper pockets to be able to buy much better legal representation and get their way. The concern here is that wealthy corporations will stifle startups and small company's that tread on a corporation's IP. Some may disregard this argument, but I think it's a legitimate concern. Look at the billions of dollars they are spending on this. In terms of Microsoft refusing to license their IP on a competing platform, perhaps they could, but then they don't want another visit from the DOJ either.
No, see, put a dollar sign in front of it to make it an absolute range, just leave it alone if its supposed to be relative. You didn't email this to the president already did you?
Always interested in what Alex Cox makes. Repo Man, Sid and Nancy, Walker, Highway Patrolman, Straight to Hell. Doesn't he get some credit for using open source software to make a feature length movie?
I have read 5 different stories in the last few days purporting to explain the drop in PC sales. They are all rubbish. The REAL reason PC's are not selling is that when Steve Jobs died, there was a huge disturbance in the force, as if thousands of black turtle neck wearing Mac users sitting in cafes sipping espressos cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. Then a wave of negative karma radiated from there collective heads into their Macs, iPhones and iPads creating a massive bad vibe in the collective information internet network hive mind. This was felt worldwide as well as on higher astral planes and other chakra levels. This caused computer users worldwide to stop thinking about consuming the next iteration of Windows PCs, and instead to really wonder where their collective heads are at. Dig? If this had happened in 1992 it wouldn't have made a ripple in the fabric of space-time, but because now there are several hundred million Apple devices linked to the collective consciousness, it had a powerful effect. If you have any questions about this, it will all be appearing in my new O'Reilly pubished book, "How your computer can help you experience better Transcendental Meditation." It's the one with a chimpanzee on the cover drinking a glass of Cabernet and giving you the middle finger.

I can't remember from my pirate classes with Guybrush Threepwood what the correct insult is for this story... anyone? Maybe, I hear the end of Lucas Arts is near, I hope Disney gets skunk mucus in its ear.
A liberal arts major from a small liberal arts school who dropped acid and traveled to India to meditate and ate a diet of nothing but fruit... Why wouldn't they hire him?
Why did they only make it $2995? Why didn't they make it $190,000 and a free ride in a helicopter to Disneyworld? Ask for the real money. On the other hand, they did come in under $3000, which the Ronco corporation knew was the key to selling lots of Ginsu knives. Only $19.95.
And there I was, seriously considering running out and buying a dumbphone and a pay as you go plan, and then more news of the Orwellian nightmare we are all dilegently constructing. Isn't there some wisdom in smashing your computer with a hammer and throwing your cell phone in the toilet?
The only thing I can take from this is that the potential growth in mobile platforms far outstrips the costs associated with developing hardware for another game console platform. Like a previous comment asked, I wonder if they told Microsoft to go away as well. If they did, what does this mean in the bigger picture? Is the future of gaming on tablets?
The EPA standards that were implemented in 2008 supposedly imposed tougher standards on manufacturers, taking into account colder temperatures, faster driving, and AC use. I found in my own car I get much better mileage than what the window sticker advertised. A little surprised the US seems better regulated on this one small issue.
Warning: if the cooling system fails, the cores may burn a hole through the chassis as well as the floor and all the way to the center of the earth.

The life of a repo man is always intense.
If KDE's "modularity" makes it faster, when will I start to see these modules in my favorite Linux distros.

I think Google may announce that the weed on 6th street is exceptional, but the cover charges at the bars are ridiculous.
You would be stretched out into Spaghetti!! I saw the movie! Stephen Hawking said so himself.

Whatever he does, he better make sure he never lets Chainsaw Al Dunlap near him. He'll saw him up and sell off the body parts as assets.

Thank you for encapsulating the entire debate in one easy post. You are the Cliff Notes of Slashdot.
